Dark

Rain outside... it turns the sky black
and wraps the city in near-silence. It brings out memories of long
ago, when the sky was black and all was quiet, that I would rather
forget.

Life doesn't stop for rain, however, or
for memories. The store is quiet, but not deserted, and I stay at the
counter and watch the rain through the front windows, taking people's
money and answering questions. I'm not in the mood for autographs
today, and shake my head when a child asks for a duel 'just for fun'.
Not today.

Water runs down the plate glass in
miniature rivers, the way blood once ran down the palace walls.

The child's mother pays for his board
game, and I take her money and bag the game, murmuring absently for
them to please come back again. He holds the game, peering into the
bag. An umbrella expands with a soft thump, and they disappear into
the rain. The store is empty.

School is getting out, the busiest time
for us. I should stay here...

Thunder rolls, and it sounds like dark
laughter. A chill crawl up my spine and grabs hold of my heart.

I turn the sign around and lock the
door, pull the shades tight over the windows and turn all the lights
on high. In the artificial light, I roam and straighten the boxes,
cleaning the shelves. I don't see them, only the darkness I know
waits outside, and within. Darkness I cannot face. A tremor in my
hands betrays it.

A click. The door I locked behind me
moves. My heart clenches again and I face it, trapped against the
shelf. Darkness...

It opens a little and amethyst eyes
blink in the bright light, as Yuugi steps in, bedraggled like a
soaked cat. Then he smiles at me, stepping inside and dropping his
bag by the door. “Mou hitori no boku.” I don't have to
ask him to lock the door behind him again before he comes and wraps
his arms around me. He pretends not to notice the tremor, refusing to
embarrass me, but his hand runs down my back to soothe it.

“Aibou.” I squeeze him
gently and bury my face in his wet hair. He smells divine.

He is light and warm and good... He is
perfect.

“Let's go upstairs,” he
suggests gently. I only smile. With him, it doesn't matter where I
am, the darkness is gone.
