Change – Prologue

“I can’t believe you were late again Seto!” Mokuba exclaimed indignantly, “You said you’d be home for dinner tonight… and last night… and the night before that…”

Seto held out a hand, cutting his little brother’s ranting short, “I know Mokuba but there was an emergency.”

“So what! You have plenty of people working for you that could’ve dealt with it.”

“I’m not in the mood for a lecture Mokuba. It’s late and I have to get up early tomorrow.” He replied nonchalantly.

“I don’t care! You’re gonna hear what I have to say Seto.” Mokuba glared at his brother, “You spend all your time working, you barely sleep, you never eat and you never, ever spend any time with me anymore! I can’t remember the last time you smiled, or the last time you laughed. It’s like you’ve forgotten how to have fun and I don’t like this new Seto, I want the old one back!”

Seto spun around and matched his brother’s glare, “I don’t have time for fun and games Mokuba. I’m too busy working hard so I can provide for you!”

“I DON’T WANT ANY OF THIS JUNK!” He screamed, grabbing the nearest thing he could find and throwing it at the wall, “I JUST WANT MY BROTHER BACK!”

“Stop behaving like a child Mokuba.”

“NO! I’M SICK OF THIS! ALL YOU CARE ABOUT IS YOUR STUPID COMPANY! I HATE KAIBA CORP, I LOATHE IT.”

Seto grabbed Mokuba’s arm, stopping his rampage, and before either of them realised what had happened he’d slapped his little brother.

“You… you…” Mokuba’s eyes filled with tears as he gingerly touched the red mark on his pale cheek.

“Mokuba… I’m sorry. I don’t know why I did that.” Seto tried to hug his brother.

“I HATE YOU TOO!” Mokuba shouted, squirming out of Seto’s grasp and running off.

“MOKUBA!” Seto cried, running after him, only to have the door to the youth’s room slammed in his face and locked.

“Mokuba! Please open the door. I’m sorry. Please…”

But the only reply was silence.

Joey hummed to himself as he walked home from Yugi’s place, where he’d been feverishly studying for the stupid end of year tests they had to do. He’d moved out of home a few months ago to escape his drunk of a father and school was becoming quite a burden when coupled with the part time job he’d had to take. Still, it was definitely worth it to get out of the wreck of a house he’d been living in. Now he had a small, yet nice apartment a few blocks away from Yugi’s house. Sure, it wasn’t exactly a palace but it suited him just fine. He was about to open the door to his building when a quiet sobbing coming from the dark alley next to him caught his attention.

“Yo!” He called out, “Who’s there?”

He cautiously entered the alley and approached the small figure huddled against the wall, “Are you okay kid?”

“Go away!” The person snapped, in an oddly familiar voice.

“Do I know ya? I think I recognise your voice from somewhere.”

The boy looked up and his eyes widened when he saw who was standing over him, “Joey!”

“Mokuba! What are ya doing out here at dis time of night?” He held out his hand and helped Mokuba up, “Where’s Kaiba?”

“I don’t care! I hate him!”

Joey was shocked, he’d never thought he’d hear Mokuba say that, “Come on now, ya don’t mean that.”

“I do!”

“I think you should come to my place so we can call your brother okay.”

“I’m not going back! He’ll just get mad and hit me again.”

Joey pulled the young boy up the stairs to his apartment, “He won’t hit you… again? Wait a sec, he hit you?”

Mokuba sniffled, “I was mad at him ‘cause he was home late again so I started yelling and he grabbed me and slapped me.”

The blonde’s eyes narrowed angrily as he pushed his front door open and guided Mokuba to sit on the couch, “That arrogant asshole! Why I oughta go over there right now and give him a piece of my mind.”

“No! You can’t let him know where I am. He was so angry with me and I’m scared. Please don’t make me go back Joey.” Mokuba cried.

“Don’ worry, you can stay here with me. I won’t let him lay a finger on ya Mokuba.” Joey reassured him.

AN: I understand that this fic might upset a few people… and I know that Seto would never hit Mokuba and Mokuba would never run away, blah blah blah. Guess what though, I don’t care. I was bored and so I just started writing and this is what came out. Flame it if you like, I find them to be incredibly amusing so go ahead and make my day. God knows I could use a good laugh. Having said that, I would appreciate compliments as well, and constructive criticism is also great.
