Chapter 7: Harpie Lady

They searched but did not find Mokuba. At least it served to take Yugi’s mind off the fact that his Master knew who he really was and worse than that, where he was. But with the loss of his Master’s brother he had just another reason to get into Pegasus’ castle. With his friend’s right beside him.

He was happy to see their antics, especially between Joey and Tristan. This was the closest he had seen this type of thing. There had never been much interaction at the complex. There his life was so disciplined that he had no friends. They made him laugh, and there had also been little of that while he grew up. And the Dueling Monkey thing was a good touch he thought. Of course he didn’t like what Mai had to say about Joey’s abilities. Sure he liked to help his friend, but it wasn’t as bad as she was saying. Then to see him accept the challenge made by Rex Raptor and Mai, which he thought was not a good idea and neither did the others. He went and hit his over protective best friend, this scared Yugi a bit, never seeing Joey as mad as he was then. When asked Yugi agreed not to help Joey, but he was concerned about the way things were going. While Joey began his duel Yugi decided to go after Tristan. Speaking with him he realized just how much Tristan cared for Joey, and that he was concerned with helping him help his sister as well. Yugi wondered if they would see him that way, care for him like that. It was wonderful when they returned to see his and Joey’s cards on the field and making a difference against Rex. Their friends back to being strong again. Rex turned the game again and Yugi could see a way out of it, but would keep his promise. He could not break a promise. In the end though it didn’t matter Joey figured it all out and won. The fight between Tristan and Joey afterward, which T?a said was their way of saying how much they cared, he really hoped they didn’t do that to him to show him how much they cared--if ever.

Night fell quickly on the island, and Tristan’s bad ghost story reminded them all that they were starving and had no food with them, that was until Mai came along with a bag of food she agreed to share with them. She delegated the jobs between them and found a shower for Tea to use. At one point Yugi found himself alone with her waiting for Joey and Tristan to get back with the water, as they started the fire.

“So Yugi, the collar is an unusual fashion statement. You do know what it means don’t you?” she said in conversation.

Yugi froze a minute, then grabbed the puzzle, you mean this? “It was a gift from my grandfather.”

“No, not that, though it is a little large for you. No, I mean the neck band, you do know that it can be seen as a slave collar, don’t you?”

“Really,” Yugi faked.

“Yes, the kind worn by pleasure slaves. You can’t tell me you didn’t know that.”

“Well, ah, no. I just thought it looked kinda cool,” he lied without looking at her.

She shook her head, “You are just lucky that your geeky friends have no idea what it is either, or you would be in for a lot of teasing. I would ditch it if I were you.”

Yugi nodded and was saved from any further conversation when Joey and Tristan returned and Joey took over the cooking. They ate together before Mai went off for a walk and they suddenly had a new companion when Ryou Bakura came into their camp, he was a school friend of the trio. He joined them around the campfire as they talked about the cards that they liked, each choosing a card that was their favorite. Ryou then proposed a game with those cards in a deck together, to be played by Yugi, just a regular duel, or so they thought.

The presence within Ryou revealed the Millennium Ring to Yugi and proceeded to take them into the Shadow Realm so that he could steal the puzzle, only to have the presence within Yugi make his appearance. Yugi finally came face to face to the voice that he had heard within his head, the presence he had felt when he dueled. At one point the evil Bakura questioned the “big” Yugi about his guidance and protection of Yugi, and Yugi wondered if being enslaved was much better than fighting for his life in the Shadow Realm. But in the end the presence and Yugi won the duel sending the evil Bakura off to the Shadow Realm without them, freeing their souls to return to their bodies. Now they all knew about the presence within Yugi, someone that Yugi assured them that they could trust. But before anything else could be said they heard Mai scream and ran off to find out what was wrong.

It seemed that Mai had lost a duel with one of Pegasus’ eliminators, losing all of her star chips in the process. Yugi decided to take on the man named Panic, his companion presence taking over. Panic tried to stir fear and panic in his opponents, but “big” Yugi was not so easily intimidated. Even when things looked at the grimmest, he was able to find something to fight back with. His legs were chained in place as well, but he was not afraid. He went on to beat Panic and when attacked by the other’s fiery weapon, was able to use the power of the puzzle to protect himself.

Afterwards he gave Mai back the chips she had lost and they were able to build their friendship with her.
