Chapter Six

**~***~**

Isis woke with a start, wondering how long she had been dozing for. She hurriedly got up out of the bed, pulling on her linen robes that had been carelessly discarded onto the floor earlier that evening. The priests and Pharaoh were bound to be back from the mercenaries’ headquarters by now. Seth would come looking for Isis and Kisara before long, and finding them up in her chamber, naked, could never bring anything good. She looked toward Kisara, who was still sleeping lightly, and smiled. She never dreamed she could love anyone as much as she could Kisara. No man could compare, not even one as handsome as Seth.

The petite, dazzlingly beautiful priestess started applying her jewellery, looping two sections of hair behind her ears into gold rings, and put on her headdress. As she started to apply her kohl, a muffled murmur came from the bed beside her, and Kisara was sitting up rubbing her eyes a moment later. She blinked a couple of times at Isis; the contrast of her exceptionally white skin against the Black Panther skin standing out against the other features of the room.

“Welcome back,” Isis chuckled with a delighted smile.

Kisara returned the smile and stretched her arms up in the air. “Are they back, yet?”

Isis shook her head. “I’m not sure, but we should probably return downstairs soon, anyway.”

“Yes.” Kisara agreed as she hopped out the side of Isis’ bed and slipped into her tunic. “It is cold,” she said after a while.

“Yes, but the storm is moving north. It should be gone in a couple more days, and then we can -”

“And then you can what?”

Isis and Kisara both snapped their heads toward the room’s entrance. Startled and surprised at the same time, they saw the young apprentice magician leaning against the doorway, smirking, blue-green eyes glinting with mischief. Mana had overheard them, and a chill of dread made Isis’ blood run cold, making her wonder how much she had heard, or worse – seen. However, Mana looked entirely innocent, which ignited a glimmer of hope for Isis. Kisara looked over at the priestess, desperately looking for an answer.

“I was just saying that once the storm is over, I can show Kisara the wildlife, and teach her the names of plants and animals. Isn’t that right, Kisara?”

Kisara could have jumped up and kissed the young priestess. “Yes, that is right.”

Mana lifted her chin and smiled deviously. “I see…Isis, have you seen Mahado? I can’t find him anywhere, and I need to speak with him about the matrimony…”

Isis quirked an eyebrow. “No, I’m sorry, I haven’t. They may very well still be away from the palace. Seth said they might not be back for an evening meal. Do you mind me asking what it is you need to speak with Mahado about?”

“Well…” the young brunette girl started, walking into the room. “I haven’t fully finished my training yet, but I really want to go through with the ceremony anyway, even if Mahado is still teaching me. I don’t want to wait, but Mahado thinks it’s best if we do…”

Unexpectedly, Isis smirked, much to Mana’s surprise. She was so used to Isis’ usually dormant face. “You are the woman in the relationship, Mana, so tell him how you feel. Mahado is a wise, caring shaman, and will listen to you. He loves you, you can be sure of that.”

“Oh, Isis. I wish I could believe you. You don’t know how excited I am! Kisara, we will have our ceremonies at the same time if Mahado agrees! Are you excited, too? About marrying Seth? You must be; I know I would be. He’s so handsome and has the most beautiful coloured eyes…”

Kisara swallowed a hard knot in her throat. She didn’t want to lie to the young teenager, but knew that if she didn’t, then everything would be ruined. “Yes… I am looking forward to it, Mana.”

Mana smiled half-heartedly. “You don’t sound so excited, Kisara. You must be nervous, and so scared, being in a whole new country and having people try to kill you and…”

Isis snorted disapprovingly at the young woman. “That’s enough, Mana. Come, now, let’s go to the dining room to prepare for dinner.”

**~***~**

Isis, Kisara, Mana and a couple of the palace guards and maids were the only people present at the table that night. The meal consisted of slow-roasted goose stuffed with sage and whole sweet onions; boiled wild carrots and sweet potatoes; a baked seafood platter consisting of fresh-water shrimp and pike; a plate of freshly-baked bread, and of course everyone was welcome to a mug of wine, beer, stewed chamomile tea, or water.

Meals prepared by the kitchen staff were more often than not gourmet, every evening without fail. The kitchen servants felt that being called to serve the Pharaoh and his council, their job was to provide only the finest of service. This also meant going out of their way to scour all natural resources for the finest meat, poultry, seafood, fruit, vegetables, herbs, and other ingredients necessary to make bread, wine, teas and other such fare.

Kisara picked at her meal slowly, somewhat disturbed about Mana suddenly appearing in the doorway earlier, talking swiftly and fluently in Egyptian about something she could scarcely understand. She understood parts in the mentioning of Seth’s name, and the word ‘matrimony’, and she felt her heart sink. Being unfaithful to Seth was not her intention, but she could not deny her spellbinding desire for Isis, either. She stole glances from the ebony-haired lady occasionally over dinner, thinking about how she wished every day could be her last at the palace. She shuddered in knowing that each day passed was a day closer to her planned marriage, and if they didn’t act soon, it would be too late.

**~***~**

Five days later, the ongoing storm had finally finished offering the year’s rain over Memphis, and had moved north to the Nile Delta. The ground was still very sloppy and flooded, but the landscape of Egypt was already showing signs of new life beginning to break through. Desert plants flourished, and herd animals were starting to fatten up due to the plentiful abundance of new shoots, grain and fresh water. It was no lie that the people of Egypt were usually happiest at this time of year.

Isis was pleased to see the storm moving off. In a day or two the land would be dry and compact again from the warm heat of the day, meaning that she could finally start to initiate her plan of escape with Kisara. All she needed now was time to think ahead, and to sort out what possessions she would be taking with her. At night she would discreetly put away items into her gazelle-hide haversack - one by one - so that it didn't appear that it looked like she was leaving. Maids may start to get curious, and nobody had a bigger mouth than them. They were the gossip queens of the palace, and if there was anything that Isis couldn't stand, it was rumors.

Isis had her plan almost entirely figured out, which excited her. Although Isis had the ability to keep herself calm, she knew that Kisara could not. Isis had learnt that Kisara was a very excitable, unpredictable young woman at the best of times, and thus ceased to tell her about her ultimate plan until the day before she planned to go. She knew though, that they would have to make a practice trip down to the Nile so they knew the appropriate route to take.

In the back of her mind she knew that the simple slip of a tongue could have them plummeting to their doom. She had to be very careful about the way she talked and acted, acting like there was nothing different to her routine, or the fact that she and Kisara had an insatiable love blossoming between them.

Each day Isis would continue with Kisara's lessons, satisfying her unquenchable thirst for knowledge in things such as the names of the Gods and Goddesses, and the reason why they were so important to the Egyptian culture. She also taught her about the vital customs for Egyptian women; if Kisara was going to be living in Egypt, she would have to learn how to act and live like an Egyptian woman. Teaching Kisara how to do her makeup, hair and clothing in the traditional Egyptian way was also necessary, and it could also turn out to be quite amusing. The only hard part was restraining from touching each other inappropriately, knowing that there could be a pair of spying eyes around any corner, at any time.

Isis was very subtle in her ways, and took it to full advantage. Nobody had suspected them once, yet, and she could almost laugh out loud about it. She did feel sorry, though, and a little selfish for what she was doing. Seth obviously wanted Kisara to call his own, and didn't know what he was doing wrong, but he was so very appealing in that he could seduce any woman he desired. It was also absolutely vital that nobody - Seth especially - found out why Kisara was so distant from him.
