Chapter 5
*looks around* What?! I’m back? Yea!!!
Yes, as hard as it is to believe, I am back, with this chapter to sate your tastes for a while. Sorry for not updating, I’ve been so busy, not to mention that I’ve had the worst writer’s block on record. Speaking of that, if anyone out there has any ideas for fics, or any chapters for this fic, just let me know. I can’t promise that I’ll use them, but if I do, I will defiantly give you credit for it.
So yes, back to the fan fiction goodness!
Warrior of Shadows
Chapter 5
Various smells wafted up the stairs from the kitchen as Yugi padded softly down the stairs. He turned the corner, almost running into the Warrior as he was awkwardly setting the table. Plates were slightly askew, and silverware in strange places, but altogether it looked alright.
The small teen sat down, placing the silverware in their proper places and wondering what exactly he was going to get for breakfast. He didn’t think that duel monsters were that good at cooking, but then again, the Warrior didn’t seem to be just another duel monster.
He was woken up from his ponderings by a soft thud as something rather strange looking landed on his plate. Being as polite as he could, Yugi mumbled a quick thank you and lightly poked the food product that was currently making its home on his plate. As he looked across the table, he noticed that the Warrior had two of the things on his own plate and was ripping them apart with long-fingered hands.
After some more light poking, Yugi came to the conclusion that breakfast was a kind of biscuit, and it was lightly burnt on the bottom. A motion caught his eye as the Warrior got up and grabbed a bowl, spooning some of the dark brown contents inside of it onto his “biscuit”.
Yugi did the same, except for the fact that he had forgotten to rip it apart beforehand, so he ended up cutting the “biscuit” up with his knife and fork. The Warrior made a grunt, and Yugi could have sworn to have seen him smirk.
Stabbing a piece of his fork, Yugi plopped it into his mouth, immediately impressed with its taste. It was sweet, kind of like a thick donut, and the sauce was a sugary glaze. Seeming as cinnamon rolls were one of his favorite foods, Yugi enjoyed his breakfast a lot.
“This is great!” the boy exclaimed, “thanks!”
The Warrior inclined his head slightly in a ‘you’re welcome’ way, and then continued to eat. This brought Yugi back to the fact that he still had yet to hear the monster talk, and every moment he spent with him, he wanted to hear his voice more and more.
The Warrior looked past Yugi and at the TV sitting on a self in the living room behind the small teen. Raising his hand, the monster snapped his fingers in the air, and the TV turned on. Immediately a car commercial came on, but the monster and boy didn’t care, both were glad to have something to break the silence.
It was then that Yugi noticed the strange, or better, the seemingly regal way that the monster sat. His boot-clad feet were flat on the floor, and legs next to each other neatly in front of his chair. His back was arrow straight, with a perfect curve in his lower back. Instead of leaning on his elbows as Yugi did, the Warrior had only his wrists lightly setting on the table. He reminded Yugi of a king.
A flash reflecting on the glass cupboard behind the Warrior’s head brought Yugi’s attention to the TV behind him. He turned around in his chair, legs on either side of the back. Across the screen were giant white letter spelling out “BREAKING NEWS”.
“From the news desks of ABC 7 News, we have breaking news. It seems that researchers have discovered an ancient tomb of the infamous ‘Nameless Pharaoh’. The tomb was found in near-perfect condition, with nothing being stolen, probably due to the immense amount of care that was taken to hide the tomb in the first place.”
As the broadcast went on, showing the insides of the tomb, Yugi noticed that upon the sarcophagus, there were a lot of cut-out objects, and even one that seemed to fit his pyramid-shaped necklace. Upon the “head” of the sarcophagus was what Yugi had found out to be called the “millennium eye”, the same that was on his puzzle necklace.
“Another interesting point of information is that there was no body found inside the sarcophagus, looks like there’s a mummy among up folks!” The news anchor joked, before the news switched back to normal programming.
At the mention of a mummy, Yugi heard a coughing behind him, and looked back to realize that the Warrior seemed to be choking. He got up, and going behind the monster, smacked him once. The Warrior coughed once more before sitting up and gasping for air, staring wide-eyed at the TV screen. He sighed, the first actual sound he had made as of yet, and laid his forehead on the table again.
‘Ok, if he can do that, then he must be able to talk!’ thought Yugi as he removed the dishes from the table, leaving the Warrior to recover. After rinsing them off and putting them into the dishwasher, he sat back down, this time next to the Warrior.
“You know, I do like having you around,” Yugi began, determined to hear the voice of the monster, “ You are a great friend, and I can’t thank you enough for the help you have given me in the shop, but its still hard to have a friend that doesn’t talk.”
The Warrior looks at Yugi for a moment, before turning his eyes down and pressing his lips together, a look of distress upon his face. Yugi looks at the monster and sighs, he may not talk, but he is still the best friend that the boy has ever had, and he wasn’t going to ruin that by forcing the monster to do something that he didn’t want to do.
Plastering a smile that said ‘I understand’ onto his face, Yugi lightly placed his hand on the monsters shoulder before heading back up the stairs to his room, but not before the monster caught a look of disappointment upon his childlike face.
He heard the door to Yugi’s room shut, the Warrior stares blankly at the TV, thinking about what to do.

Two hours later, and with a slight headache, the Warrior rips himself form the TV and walks to Yugi’s room. He sees the boy asleep, head cradled on his hands and feet drawn up tight.
‘He is lonely, and I’m not helping any either’ the monster thought, sitting on the edge of the bed, hoping that he wouldn’t wake the boy up.
Unfortunately for the Warrior, Yugi wasn’t really asleep; in fact, as soon as the monster had sat down, the amethyst eyes opened.
Seeing that he had indeed woken Yugi up, the Warrior scooted more onto the bed and lay down on his back, staring up at the ceiling. He moved his ankle rapidly from side to side, and fiddled with the netting on his shirt.
Yugi looked at him, noticing the obvious nervousness in the monsters demeanor. He then looked up at the ceiling; heart pounding at what he thought was going to happen.
“I do have a name you know”, said the Warrior slowly and quietly, his deep baritone voice heavy with an exotic accent.
Yugi propped himself upon his elbow, looking intently at the duel monster. “Ok, then what is it, or even better, what do you want me to call you?”
“Atemu, that is my name . . . and what you can . . . call me” The duel monster stumbled slightly over the words, and Yugi figured that this wasn’t his native language. He seemed embarrassed about not speaking that well.
“Ok Atemu, I can help you talk ya know, maybe we can get rid of that accent”. He watched as Atemu visibly relaxed, the man turning his head and spreading his lips in a contented smile.
“Thanks, Yugi”
