Chapter 5

Unfortunately, the offer to cook was only the first in a string of strange new behaviors in Bakura. In the course of a week, he’d not only attempted (and failed splendidly) to bake three times, but he had also succeeded in ruining two of Ryou’s favorite shirts via iron burns and making the PC somehow spontaneously implode. Needless to say, Ryou was more than a little annoyed with his yami’s new-found handyman/homemaker skills, or lack thereof. The young man had had just about enough of it and was going to give his dark a piece of his mind when he got home, but choked on his own tongue when he saw said yami on the front lawn wrestling with a Chihuahua.

It was a battle for the ages.

Bakura spit, cursed, and kicked at the feisty little dog as he tried to wrest something from it’s minute jaws…Ryou, honestly not wanting to know, walked past the thief and the hyperactive dog silently to the front door. He dropped his stuff off, walked into the living room, and flopped onto the couch to contemplate what god was punishing him and how to appease said god. His melancholy thoughts were interrupted by a fuming cursing Bakura storming into the room and stomping up the stairs. Ryou just sighed heavily and re-buried his face into the crook of his arm, now assuredly convinced that he was being punished.

Upon returning and seeing Ryou on the couch, Bakura immediately calmed himself, not wanting to frighten the hikari. Ryou never reacted well to Bakura’s temper, and he really was trying to make himself a better person! At least… when in Ryou’s presence. Now calm and proud of his suppression of rage towards the evil rodent dog outside, the thief looked at Ryou confident that the lad would have a look of wonderment! However, judging by slack position of his body, the younger man was obviously not phased. In fact, he didn’t even seem to acknowledge Bakura’s existence.

“Ah! Apparently I’m not a threat anymore,” Bakura nonchalantly stated. “Good to know.” Ryou stirred slightly on the couch before sitting up fully and turning to look at Bakura. He gazed coldly at his dark as his hand shot up to show the sliver throwing knife balanced between his fingers.

“I’m always prepared,” Ryou deadpanned.

Bakura just couldn’t say anything to that, so he settled for just looking expectantly at his light. The younger man would have none of it, so he slowly stood up, and began the walk to his room. Bakura, not wanting to miss this chance, quickly blocked his path, having just come down the stairs himself. Ryou just stared up at him with dead eyes.

“Haven’t you been wondering why I’ve been acting weird lately?” the thief blurted out. He hadn’t meant to cut to the chase so quickly, but the hikari’s cold treatment was really starting to get to him. Ryou looked at him thoughtfully for a moment.

“I did, but then I realized that giving you any attention would be admitting that you exist,” Ryou said, voice cold and distant. “And I’d rather like to forget that unpleasant fact.”

“Hey!” Bakura shouted, annoyance building. “Did you even notice that I’m *trying* to be nice here?!”

Ryou shot him a dangerous glance. “Tell someone who gives a damn.”

Bakura felt his control slipping on his anger. He wanted Ryou to understand, but the damn brat wouldn’t even give him a chance!

“What the hell is your problem, Ryou?!”

“I thought we’d already covered this,” Ryou sighed annoyed. “You!”

Bakura bit his tongue at what he had been about to say.

“I know what I’ve done in the past! But look, I can’t take it anymore! I want to make it up to you!”

Ryou looked up at him, death glare.

“You know, a weaker part of me wants to believe you’re telling the truth…But I have memories and experiences that prove you’re nothing but a manipulative, power hungry, and let’s not forget evil, bastard. There is nothing you can do to convince me otherwise, and I have the scars to remind me…So DON’T try to fuck with my emotions again Bakura, I won’t let you! The only reason I even tolerate your annoying fucking banter is because without you, I’d lose my sanity,” Ryou spat viciously!

Bakura felt those last few threads of control slip away as he consciously snapped! He’d had enough! He had been trying his damndest to impress the kid, but nothing worked! Granted, he’d fucked up more than enough times in trying, but even the plain effort wasn’t appreciated! Damn brat! If Ryou wouldn’t listen of his own accord, then he’d just have to force the boy! He grabbed Ryou’s shoulders violently, not really caring when Ryou started screaming at him.

He roughly pushed his hikari into the wall, glaring, threatening, intimidating with every ounce of his body! Words wouldn’t work, but actions sure as hell would! He chuckled under his breath at the hikari’s frozen expression of panic and surprise. It was a miracle that he even let that much show… The thief could almost smell the fear coming off the boy, that fear he so arrogantly tried to hide, but never really could...Bakura wanted so badly to melt away that icy exterior, to slap away that arrogance, but something else, something less violent but just as forceful would be needed… Bakura smirked and crushed his lips to those of Ryou!

Ryou was stunned.

Had time completely stopped?

//Wait? Isn’t Bakura supposed to be hurting me? He was going to hurt me…//

The thief wrapped his fingers into Ryou hair and forced the boy’s body into his!

//He *will* hurt me! He can’t! I won’t fucking let him!!//

Before Ryou could think twice, he yelled against the thief’s mouth as he slammed the knife with lightning speed into Bakura’s side, grating against bone as he forced it deep!

But, Bakura didn’t pull away! He took adavantage of the light’s little cry and tenderly slipped his tongue into Ryou’s mouth. He somehow pressed closer to the young man, making his actions seem more desperate!

Terrified, Ryou pressed himself further into the wall and jostled the blade, trying to remove it to get in another blow, but the knife would not move! Bakura only hissed in pain against his mouth…

Ryou was about to bite down, but Bakura finally broke the kiss, panting heavily. He cupped Ryou’s stunned face gently, hands slightly shaking, and looked fiercely into his eyes. He loved the dazed expression on the hikari’s face…He loved that he could do that to him…And he would do so much more, if only Ryou would let him.

“If hurting me will make you heal, I’ll gladly take what you have to dish out, hikari.”

Distantly, Ryou felt his eyes burning with the gentle touch of Bakura’s hand on his cheek…

Somehow, he found his lip trembling against his will…

But…But…he couldn’t cry! He wouldn’t ever waste another tear on Bakura! The manipulative bastard didn’t deserve it! But…But, why did he have to be so believable?! How could he toy with Ryou’s weaknesses like this, again?! This would just have to stop.

Ryou firmly placed his hands on Bakura’s chest and pushed him away, putting some distance between their bodies. He looked unwaveringly into his yami’s eyes, trying to ignore the apparent strain in said eyes.

“Why are you doing this, Bakura?” he deadpanned, shoving down the confusion and unwanted longing he denied…He did not want to share his warring emotions with the thief.

Bakura shook his head sadly as a wistful smile made it’s way onto his lips.

“Don’t you get it, you stubborn fuck? I luh-” Bakura coughed, reflexively stepping back and covering his mouth. Blood splattered onto his hand, a rivulet of scarlet seeped from the corner of his mouth. He quickly wiped it away with the back of his hand, genuinely smiling.

“I love you…” he gently rasped out. “And I’m not gonna leave you alone until you believe me.” The thief chuckled lightly, stepping away from Ryou and pointing at the dagger sticking out of his upper left torso.“But I think I need to get this taken care of before I can make good on that promise. You just have a penchant for putting holes in my body…”

The thief smiled wanly as he turned away from the shocked Ryou.

The hikari watched mutely as Bakura stumbled towards the door. He watched as the thief paused once to quickly pull out the dagger with a healthy curse. He watched his yami disappear out the door…Only a tiny trail of blood marking his path.

Ryou stayed frozen to the spot, wondering what the hell just happened. His brain was completely stuck.

Slowly, ever so slowly, only after the thief had left his vision did the events begin to process correctly.

Bakura had whined… Right.

Then he had yelled… Right.

Then he attacked Ryou… Damn right!

Then he…kissed him… R-Right. Then…Then…

What had happened was just too astonishing for Ryou’s mind to fully comprehend! Had Bakura actually-? The thief just-? Did his Yami just confess his love for him!? It just didn’t make sense! Anger did *not* equal affection, just as Bakura did *not* equal love!

Did he?

Somehow, Ryou found himself standing in the doorway of his room, not knowing when his feet had begun their journey, or even why they took him there. But, his ever wise feet guided him to his window seat, a place of refuge…*his* place of refuge.

However something stopped him from sitting right away. There was something on the cushions blocking him…something dirty and obviously beaten up…A letter? Ryou reached out for the stained paper, tenderly handling it. There were grasstains and…bite marks? on it.

As he lifted up the battered letter, a second, cleaner, smaller piece of paper revealed itself underneath the first. Driven by curiosity, Ryou opened the beaten letter.

“I take it back.”

That was all it said…

//What the hell did that mean? Manipulative bastard! He fought with a minature rat dog just to taunt me with this cryptic piece of trash?! What the hell is is problem?! Like there’s any possible way that demon could…luh-…could feel any damn emotion! He wouldn’t change for anyone!//

Ryou nearly threw the letter across the room in rage when he remembered the second piece of folded paper. He wondered what the hell else the thief had to say! Angry, he nearly ripped opened the second letter, miraculously not damaging the small, fragile, yellowed piece of stained parchment that fell out. On it were the words:

‘I want to be loved.’

//No! He-He couldn’t have!!//

Ryou’s resolve to never shed a tear because of Bakura dissolved at the sight, as the implications behind the letter and the memory of that night overtook his senses.
