Chapter 4

After dinner Seto didn't want to give up the closeness with his lover that he had re-established. Shamelessly, using pleading eyes and pouting lips, he convinced Joey to come with him on a taxi-tour of the city. It was nearly midnight when the driver finally pulled in front of Wheeler manor. Seto had been thrilled to see Joey’s pale and thin features relax and flush from the exertion and happiness. That joy faded at the sight of the elder Joseph seated on the bottom stair, obviously waiting for his return.

“Where have you been?” Concern shone from dark brown eyes as the older man stood and made a show of checking them over. Finding them unharmed, concern changed to rage.

Seto's protective nature flared at the angry look in the older man's eyes. He stepped forward and tried to explain that after dinner he had talked ‘Joey’ into taking him to see the sights. The two of them had spent the time walking and taking pictures; he decided to leave out that they had also enjoyed taking the time to get to know each other.

Catching his temper and resisting the urge to rip the man apart with his bare hands Seto smiled and bowed low. “My apologies Wheeler-san. We should have contacted you. After your grandson pleasured me with himself at dinner I found myself restless. I asked him to show me the legendary bright lights of New York. We rode a taxi around the city taking many pictures that I will share with my young brother.”

Eyes narrow with barely masked rage, the elder swung to Seto. “I … am sure you meant no harm, but my grandson is ... still recovering from an accident and has missed two doses of his medication." With a frown he turned to the younger blond, "Joey, your nurse is waiting for you." Turning back to his guest he added, "Mr. Kaiba, if you’ll follow me, I will show you to your room,” he glanced at his grandson, “He will be staying in the Green room.”

Seto decided he’d pushed his welcome far enough for one day. Affecting deep humility, he bowed low and moved to follow his host, but was jerked to a stop by Joey grabbing his arm. “I’ll show him to the Rose room, Grandfather. He’s new here and very nervous. I think he will feel better close to someone. You asked me to see to him, I will do so. The nurse can wait,” he added defiantly, meeting his grandfather’s eyes with a hard, challenging look.

Seto could see the older man was taken aback but didn’t want to cause a scene, and his pride in Jounouchi soared when the elder man looked away first. “All right Joey. A few more minutes won’t hurt. Show Mr. Kaiba to the Rose room instead of the Green room.” Wearily the older man stood. A blond woman of about twenty came to the head of the stairs. “Joseph has …” She trailed off as her light jade eyes settled on the younger blond. “Oh Joey," she chirped sappily, "You’ve finally returned. I was so worried about you.”

“Becca.” Joey hissed. He could have strangled his grandfather at that moment. “I didn’t expect to see you again,” he said coldly, glaring at his grand-sire.

The woman laughed lightly. “Joey we’ve been together far too long for me to run out on you now over something as silly as that. I’ve forgotten this afternoon. It doesn’t really matter anyway. It was just the accident and medicines playing with your mood,” she said as she started heading down the stairs to wrap her arms around him.

Joey clenched his fists and drew himself tall. He hated that everyone seemed to ignore anything about him that didn’t fit with what they wanted, and claimed that it was all because of the accident or medications. They totally discounted him as a person. Well it was time for them to take notice. “It wasn’t the medicine, or the crash. Becca, I meant what I said. When you touch me, all I want to do is vomit. And after your little stunt this afternoon I don’t even like you much less love you. I won’t ever marry you, and I’ll be happy to never see you again. I’ve only tolerated you this long because of grandfather, but I won’t any longer. Get out of my sight and leave me alone!” He snarled angrily as she took another step toward him. "I mean it, Becca. Leave me alone...Now!"

To her credit, the woman didn’t bat an eyelash. She simply smiled tenderly. “Joey, I’ll forgive anything you say or do right now. When you are back to yourself, I know you’ll make it up to me.”

Seto smirked slightly as he heard the low growl and saw the angry flash in Jounouchi's eyes. "Don't count on it," the blond snarled, adding, "bitch" under his breath as he turned away from her to show his guest to his room. When she grabbed his arm, he turned back ferociously. “Damn it, you dumb bitch, don’t you get it? I am myself! For the first time since I woke up, I am myself. And no matter how many times you try to suck me off I won’t ever get it up for you. Fuck, I hate idiots like you!” With a disgusted huff, Joey grabbed Seto’s arm again and dragged him past the shocked elder man and gaping young woman.

Joey, grumbling under his breath about stupid women embarrassing him in front of his boyfriend as well as choice words about other overly controlling family members, pulled the tall brunet down the hall. A simple cough froze him in his tracks. Horrified, humiliated and defiant golden eyes turned to look at the man he’d come to think of as his. “I …”

“My room? I ... need to call my brother.” Heart aching, Seto couldn’t think of another way to play off the tense situation. Seto knew about the surveillance cameras in the hall and he was sure Jounouchi knew too. He was positive they were being recorded. As much as he wanted to comfort his boyfriend right then and there, he didn’t dare tip his hand.

He saw the confusion in his love’s expression—it was colored with the fear that the scene downstairs would drive him away. He couldn’t allow their audience to know that they were quickly becoming more than friends again.

“Se …”

He bowed low, knowing he had to end this scene before he gave in to the need to hold his lover. “Wheeler-san thank you for your company today. It is much appreciated. But now I must call my brother. Is this door my room?”

Misery beamed out at him from golden eyes. “No. It’s mine. Yours is the next door.” He pointed to a door ten feet away. “It adjoins mine. We will share a bathroom.” Humiliation burned Jounouchi’s face a dark red. “I didn’t think you’d mind. But now …”

With another low bow the brunet murmured, “I am honored and grateful. Your actions now and in the limo are very generous and kind. And dinner was delicious.” Straightening, he met the pained gaze with a steady look that he hoped Jounouchi would understand. His reminder of the limo and the reason for going to the restaurant had been deliberate.

The golden eyes continued to look confused and sad for a moment, then realization filled them, and they widened and darkened. For an instant anger flickered to life then was banked. “It was my pleasure.” Turning, the blond led him to the room he’d pointed to earlier. With a courteous smile he said, “I will be a while with my grandfather ... and my nurse. Feel free to make use of the bathroom; extra towels are on the shelf behind the door.”

Seto bowed again. "Thank you. I will see you in the morning.” Quietly he went into his room. Joey squared his shoulders and turned to go downstairs. He and his grandfather were going to have a serious discussion before he received his medication for the evening.

He stormed in the door of his grandfather’s study ready for battle only to freeze in shock. “What the fuck?” He couldn’t believe his eyes. “You…” He didn’t know what to say to the embracing couple.

A soft gasp was heard from Becca as the two straightened up sharply. “Now Joey, it’s not what you think. She was upset and I was calming her down,” his grandfather said soothingly, easing away from the blonde girl and sliding down into his chair in an obvious attempt to hid his bulging erection and unbuttoned trousers. Becca simply turned away to hide her reddened face and slightly disarrayed dress.

“Yeah right, playing tonsil hockey and getting a hand job,” his golden eyes spat fire. “I don’t care if you fuck her—I can’t stand her—but don’t bang her and then hand her off to me. That’s sick. And another thing, quit monitoring me. I’m fine and I don’t need a babysitter.”

Alarm and cunning flashed across the elder’s face. “Joey, your accusations are proof that you still need constant care. You really don’t think I was ‘playing tonsil hockey’ with your girlfriend, do you? Or that she was really touching me intimately? Your mind is playing tricks on you.”

“Tricks, my ass. I know a comfort kiss from … from …what I just saw. Comfort kisses don’t involve tongue, or her jacking you off. Don’t try to mess with my mind old man. If you don’t remove all the surveillance right this minute, I will be out of here so fast I will leave skid marks in the hall.”

“Joey, calm down,” Becca interjected. She turned around now that her dress was smoothed. “I … it may have looked that way to you but really, it wasn’t like that. I was feeling hurt from what you said earlier. I may have … thrown myself into Joseph’s comfort too much. I …”

The younger man snorted derisively. “Fuck that. Maybe we should look at what the cameras have to say about that.” When the woman moved towards him, Joey took a step back. “Stay the fuck away from me. I told you when you tried to blow me this afternoon that you make me sick. A double-dose of Viagra wouldn’t get me hard for you before. Now I doubt if God could. Just stick with fucking the old man and leave me alone.” Seeing the older man’s eyes flash, the younger man turned and threw at him, “She didn’t tell you that she showed up in my office and flashed her tits and bared her ass? That she tried to go down on me?”

“That’s enough Joseph,” his grandfather, trousers once again fastened, stood authoritatively, and rasped out. “I won’t have you speaking to or about your fiancée like that. You will apologize. Now!”

“I don’t have a fiancée. I have never been and will never be her lover, boyfriend, or fiancé. She’s all yours, Grandfather. I wish you joy. All I want is for you to turn off the cameras. I want to be able to sleep and piss in private.”

Joey was getting too confident. The elder decided to bring out the big guns. “How would you know anything? You don’t have any memories beyond what we’ve given you.”

“I know that I never loved her. I know that I never slept with her.” Joey was positive. There was no way he could have. His body simply didn’t respond in that way around her.

“We were there Joey. We remember. It’s just the accident talking,” Becca tried to soothe.

Joey rounded on her furiously. "Don't fucking lie to me! I know, and I'm tired of all of this crap. I may not remember the past, but I do know myself now, and I am tired of you treating me like I'm not a person! After this afternoon it should be obvious that if I gotta get it up for you it'll just go inside me and hide. Screw that. I want to live, I want to go out for dinner if I want, I want friends, and, hell I want to date. So get bent. I'm not joking or playing, I’m serious. And if you can't respect who I am right now, then I'm outta here.

“You aren’t listening to me. I know … do you understand me? I know absolutely that you and I weren’t lovers and I’m sick of all the lies and bullshit. If you and Grandfather are a couple then have the balls to admit it, but don’t fuck with my head anymore.”

To his surprise, his grandfather paled and asked in a shaken whisper, "H ... have your memories surfaced?"

Joey felt his breath catch as he realized that this went deeper than just Becca. There were other things that his grandfather didn’t want him to know, things that the older man had lied about. He didn’t answer instead he attacked. “You fucking lied. Both of you. We were never a couple. You two are, and you used me to hide it. Well shit … what else did you lie about?” He could see his question had struck home when his grandfather flinched and whitened further, casting an almost desperate glance at Becca.

“Holy shit. You did lie!" he gasped as his eyes flew open for a moment before narrowing with intense anger. "Tell me. Tell me what you lied about. Tell me the truth!” The irate blond snarled. His world tilted out of focus—nothing was real, everything was smoke and mirrors. He wanted to grab them both by the throat and force the truth out of them. Only a dim, half-remembered memory of being physically restrained in the past for attacking someone stopped him from doing so.

Shaking with rage, Joseph the First reached out and pushed a button, summoning his grandson’s nurse. “You are beyond reason. We haven’t lied to you; it’s obvious you have missed your medication.”

A large male nurse rushed through the door. “Williams, give my grandson his medication. If he refuses to take it, restrain him and give it via injection. He is becoming irrational.”

The burly nurse nodded and moved to stand over the smaller man. “Joey, please come with me.” Seeing the look of fury and denial, the nurse said softly, “Don’t make me force you, Joey.”

Blowing out an angry breath, he nodded shortly. “I’ll come along quietly. But Grandfather, I don’t care what you say or do, I won’t forget your tonsil hockey session, or your lies,” he snarled.

The blond, led by a tight grip, went docilely to his room. The nurse, seeing his patient was calm, said, “I have to get your medicine. No messing around Joey. Just stay here and take it.”

“I have to. I know I get sick without them,” the blond spat bitterly. As the man turned away Joey asked softly “You know they’re lovers don’t you?”

There was a slight pause and a small inclination of the other man’s head. “Joey, I’m not sure what you mean. I will be back in a moment.”

Joey threw himself down on the bed and buried his face in his pillow. When the nurse came back in carrying the paper cup he sighed and sat up. Ignoring the water held out for him, he slammed the contents into his mouth in one gulp then turned and flopped back down onto the bed, pulling the pillow over his head. “Now get lost. And turn off the damn cameras and all the other shit. Turn them off in Kaiba’s room too. Do it or I swear I'll find them and turn them off myself. He don't need an audience of perverted, lying, sickos watching him, and I don't need it either.”

Williams nodded and quietly left the room. He didn’t bother with the cameras or other surveillance equipment. He knew from past episodes that in half an hour his patient would be sound asleep and in the morning wouldn’t remember the request at all.

Seto, ostensibly showering, strained his ears for Jounouchi’s return. He heard their entrance, and it warmed his heart to hear his lover snarl, even when it chilled him to hear that in just a few minutes Jounouchi would take another dose of the cocktail designed to make him erase the parts of him that remained. A sad smile curved his lips. He should have known the strongest parts of Jounouchi—his heart, his temper, and his appetite would be the last to be wiped away.

Stepping out of the shower, ignoring the eerie feeling of knowing he was being watched, he dried off and slipped into his robe. With seeming carelessness he tossed his towel across the room to land in front of the hidden recess that housed a camera. Thanks to the information he’d gleaned from White’s computer, plus his own hacking into the network at Wheeler’s, Seto knew the precise location of every camera and microphone monitoring Joey. He even knew the reasons for the odd locations. His lover had made him proud. He’d fought with every bit of his heart and soul, and when violence had only netted violence, he’d turned cunning, leaving little clues to his true self in the form of crude drawings or kanji on the walls in places that the cameras couldn’t see. When his grandfather had caught on, he’d ordered the cameras stationed at waist level and in hidden little places that Jounouchi wouldn’t think to look.

He heard Jounouchi’s outer door close for the second time and took that as his cue. Assuming a baffled mask, he pulled out his toothbrush, which he laid on the counter before he began to search through his travel kit. After about two minutes of searching he sighed in disgust and turned to the adjoining room. With a discreet knock, he called “Wheeler-san, I am sorry to bother you, but I can’t find my toothpaste.”

After a moment Joey opened the door. “There’s some extra in the chest behind the mirror.”

“Show me? I have trouble reading the labels,” Seto shrugged helplessly and motioned him into the room. As he passed, the brunet faked a stumble and fell against the door, grabbing the knob for balance, and, in the process, closing it to the view of the all seeing camera.

Joey gave the normally graceful brunet a quizzical look and handed him the tube. “Here you are.” When he would have stepped away, Seto touched his arm gently with one hand and turned on the spigot with the other.

He pitched his voice low, as not to be heard over the splashing. “Are you all right?”

"Yes," the blond hesitated, then with a disgusted expression, he laughed softly. "You won't believe what I walked in on." Giving the tall brunet a look that shared his disgust, shock, and a small amount of humor, he said, "Grandfather and Becca were in a clinch. She had her hands down his pants, and he had his tongue down her throat." When Seto's color washed out to pale green he frowned. "That's new. You look like you're going to puke. I'd have thought you would puke when you ate that squid."

Seto chuckled softly, “Actually I rather like squid. As for the rest, No I won't 'puke' as you say. But the thought of what you just described does make me sick.” Concern for him showed in the deep blue eyes. “Are you all right?”

“I’m good with ‘them.’ I told you she makes me ill.” Abruptly the warm feelings Joey was enjoying started to fade. “But…” he hesitated and bit his lip. “They lied to me about my past. I don’t know everything, but when I accused them of lying, they…” Abruptly he shut his mouth and stepped back, paling in realization.

Seto’s heart skipped a beat when he saw the dawning of distrust in his love’s golden eyes. “Joey? What…?” he said, unconsciously taking a half step toward the blond.

“If they’re lying … then … everything about me is a lie. It’s all been manipulated. Even you. He introduced us. I …” pained resolve flashed across the mobile features. “I can’t trust anyone. Not even you.”

The brunet flinched from the heart-blow. The sad part was that he could see his lover’s point of view. “I …” he swallowed hard. “I can’t fault you for that, even if I did only meet your grandfather for the first time today. I wish you would trust me, but I can understand your hesitation.” Tenderly he reached up and tried to lightly stroke the mussed blond hair. “But do all of us a favor. Stop taking the medicine. Throw it up or something. If you don’t, you won’t remember me at all tomorrow in a good way or a bad one. You won't remember any of the stuff you know tonight.”

Joey’s breath caught, but he just glared and backed away. When he hit the door, he reached behind himself and wrenched it open. Without another word, he spun and raced into his room, slamming the door behind him. Mechanically, he changed into his pajamas and slid under the blankets. His movements slowing, he rolled over and buried his face and hands under his pillow hiding from the world. Absently his thumb traced over the raised seam of his mattress.

Sammei I figured that out! Huggles back. I highly recommend you try to see the subbed version of YGO. It’s a much richer story. Did you know Yugi is a PERVERT who watches porn? Or that grandpa likes Anzu’s boobs? ROFL.

NineTailedVixen Well I figured Seto and Jounouchi had been through enough. I am considering side stories that show Jounouchi’s treatment, but since they weren’t the thrust of the story I decided to simply gloss over them. Thank you so much for the review!

loverskeeper Thank you so much. I will update as soon as possible, usually about once a day.
