Chapter Two
Change – Chapter Two
Both brothers were quiet on the ride home, lost deep within their thoughts. Mokuba was worried about Joey, the entire time he’d been there the blond had tried to seem cheerful and carefree but there was always sadness behind his smiles. He couldn’t really blame Joey for being sad after what he’d overheard. He now knew that his friend had been abused by his father, and judging by Yugi’s tone it had been pretty bad. Although Mokuba knew that wasn’t really what bothered Joey, it was the loneliness. Sure, he had his friends, but they all had their own lives, homes and families, while Joey had only his empty apartment to return to each night.
“Hey Seto,” Mokuba said hesitantly, “Thanks.”
Seto looked confused, “For what Mokuba?”
He shrugged, “I dunno, just for being here for me. It must really suck to not have anyone.”
“Where’s all this coming from?”
“It’s just… Joey’s all alone.”
“Nonsense, he’s got his pathetic friends.” Seto scoffed.
“Well, yeah. But they all have their own lives and families. I know Joey has his sister but he hardly ever gets to see her.” Mokuba shook his head sadly, “It must be really hard for him.”
“Like I care about the stupid mutt. Forget about it Mokuba.”
Mokuba sighed and turned away, still thinking about Joey living all alone in that tiny apartment.
---
Joey stared out the window and watched Seto’s limo drive away with a sad look in his eyes. Seeing the two brothers together had reminded him how alone he was. Even the cold-hearted CEO had someone yet he only had himself.
“I’m being ridiculous.” He told himself, “I’m not alone, I got my friends and Serenity.”
‘Yeah, keep tellin’ yaself that Joey, maybe you’ll actually start to believe it one day.’ A little voice in his head said mockingly.
“Shut up! What do you know about it anyway?” He growled angrily at himself, “I have plenty of people who care about me.”
‘Then why do you always feel so lonely hmmm? Why do you cry yourself to sleep at night? Could it be because you’re all alone, with no one to take care of you. Your mother abandoned you and left you with your father, who hated you and abused you. Now you have no one but yourself left. Poor little Joey, all by himself with no one to hold him.’
Joey shivered as the evil sounding voice laughed coldly, “Fuck off!”
‘Are you really that desperate for some company that you’ve started talking to yourself?’
The blonde shook his head and stood up, glancing at the clock and realising he was late for work.
‘You can’t ignore me forever Joey.’
---Three Weeks Later---
He wasn’t worried.
So what if Joey hadn’t been to school for the past week, it’s not like he cared about the mutt. It was none of his business if the stupid dog decided to skip school, probably realising it was a lost cause anyway.
So if he wasn’t worried then how come he couldn’t get Joey off his mind?
Sighing irritably he climbed into his limo, deciding that the only way to get the mutt out of his mind was to go see him. He ordered the driver to take him to Joey’s apartment building reluctantly and sat back, allowing his mind to wander.
---
Joey cursed loudly as he stumbled out of bed to answer the persistent knocking on his door. After waiting a few seconds for his dizziness to dissipate he threw the door open and glared at the rather unwelcome visitor.
“What the fuck do you want Kaiba!” He snapped.
“I came to ask if you’d mind watching Mokuba while I attended a function this evening.” He replied, thinking quickly.
“Well, I wouldn’t mind, but I can’t. I’m sick.”
“I can see that mutt.”
Joey glared at Seto, “Fuck off Kaiba. I’m not in the mood to put up with you.”
“That’s no way to speak to your master.” Seto taunted.
Joey opened his mouth to reply but was suddenly overcome with a violent coughing fit, causing him to grab the doorframe to steady himself.
“You really are sick.” Seto said, his voice softening just the teensiest bit, “Have you seen a doctor?”
“No, it’s just a cold.” Joey hesitated, “Besides, it’s not like I could afford it.”
Seto smirked and pulled out his cell phone, dialling the number for his personal doctor. Ignoring Joey’s confused look he informed her that she was to come to the apartment immediately to examine his ‘friend’.
“I told ya already Kaiba, I can’t afford it!” Joey exclaimed.
“Don’t worry about it mutt. I can take care of the charge.”
“Why?”
Seto looked confused for a split second, before his icy mask reappeared, “Because dog, for some reason my brother cares about you. He wishes for you to come and visit some time soon yet you cannot do that if you are sick.”
Joey frowned, “Well, I guess it’d be polite ta invite ya in Kaiba.”

AN: Sorry it took so long, I’ve got major writers block and it was heaps hard to even get this much out.
