Let’s Escape

Jou cleared away the dishes and looked around the kitchen. It was now spotless save for the few permanent burn marks and stains. He’d cleaned the house as well and made a list of things for his father to buy. It appeared that after he’d left, the man’s life had really fallen and he was trying to quit the drinking that drove his son away.

“Katsuya?”

“Yea Dad?”

“…Is everything…alright? Now? I –I’ve stopped drinking y’know and –”

Jou turned to regard his father and looked at him, tossing blond bangs out of his eyes. “Dad…you’ve only just now stopped. It took all these years, all this time.”

“I know –but –and now I’m seein’ a counselor about…about…what I done to ya.”

They locked eyes. Brown to grey. Jou looked down and away and the elder man gazed down at his hands. “I’m sorry …God I’m so sorry…I –”

“I’m not coming back home Dad…I just…wanted to see how you were. See if you were takin’ care of yourself.”

The man nodded and drew in a shaky breath reaching for a pack of cigarettes. “I’m trying to quit.”

“I know Dad.”

Jou wiped the counter again and sighed. “I’ll be by every week okay? You can’t let the house go to hell again, alright? Ya goin’ to work?”

The man nodded, cigarette unstable in his fingers. “I, uh…they gave me a raise…I made it in on time for the past month…you should know, you got me up…after all.”

“Can ya pay rent? Do ya need my help?”

The man shrugged and Jou pushed off the counter and walked over to his father. “Dad…Dad please, ya gotta tell me if ya do. Ya can’t be homeless. Ya need stability. I can give you some money outta my pay check –”

“No, you need that money! You need it!”

“Dad. Take the god damn money okay?” He took the man’s cigarette, taking a drag before he put it out. “I find out you’re behind it won’t be pretty.” He feigned punches at the man and they both laughed, looking at the clock.

“Gonna go?”

Jou nodded, putting his wallet back after setting down three two thousand yen bills. “It’s almost midnight. I’ll be back next Monday. Alright?”

“Alright…”

Jou left and shut the door, feeling awkward not having a key to the place that had been his home for so long. He dismissed the feeling and walked into the night, hoping to find an ATM when he got to a better part of town.

Varon just sat on his motorcycle, watching the car as it moved, trying to understand the twisting in his heart. What was going on? Why was she doing this? He put a ring on her finger, didn’t she love him?

The windows were fogged, even for a humid night. Maybe they had the air conditioner on. He’d been watching the car from a distance for sometime and finally decided to just start up his bike and roar off.

Oi guess awl Oi was evva good for, was for cheatin’ on…

Jou got another six thousand off his card, sighing as he realized he’d put a dent in his savings by that much more. He stood in the well lighted ATM area and ran a hand through his hair, figuring he’d just walk home or find a place to get some bus fare. He was totally oblivious to the figure zooming up to him until he heard the tell tale roar of a motor vehicle.

He turned and nearly swore as the motorcycle’s tire stopped just before it hit him.

“What the fuck Varon! What are you doin’?!”

The Aussie looked him in the face, grinning wildly. “Let’s go out Jou. Let’s go drinkin’!”

“Varon…man I got work tomorrow!”

“Damn it Jou! Let’s fuckin’ go! I don’t have any one else! Raph’s off fuckin’ a rich dude and Amelda’s screwin’ yer Yami!”

The blond knew he’d regret it in the morning, but checked his wallet to see if he had his fake ID. He shoved his wallet back in his pocket and got on behind the brunette.

“Alright. Let’s fuckin’ go…”

The duo tore off into the night, a smile on the Aussie’s face.

After awhile, they wound up outside of a dark looking club where the music’s pulse could be heard from the outside. They looked at the bald, tattooed wall of a man guarding the door and when he saw Varon he pushed the door open, narrowing his eyes at Jou then winking.

The blond laughed nervously then in earnest as Varon grabbed his hand and dragged him in.

People were packed wall to wall, alcohol, sweat, and passion filled the air and before they were even through the first mass of people, Jou felt his blood singing out. They were on a balcony that went all around the club, looking down on the bar and dance floor below. It was dark, save for the slashes of red and green light that occasionally found their way out among the shadows. People’s teeth and clothes flashed eerie blue white and Jou realized there was black light somewhere.

Varon dragged him to the bar and slapped down some money, ordering them drinks. The bartender didn’t even ask and just gave them shot and two beers.

The Aussie grinned at Jou, leaning to talk in his ear. “Don’t worry! It’s on me!”

Jou smiled and talked back. “I thought you were broke man!”

Varon leaned back and just smiled, toasting the air and downing his shot. Jou did the same, laughing afterward. Somehow the burn felt so good.

They drank their beers and watched the packed dance floor, Jou smiling as some guys took off their shirts and started dancing body to body.

“Varon! What is this place!?”

“The Crypt!” He pointed to some scantily clad blonds hanging over the balcony railing flashing boys. Jou laughed, but was more interested in some of the guys on the dance floor, not that he didn’t like his share of T&A.

A guy brushed against him and the blond smiled ferally, matching the lusty look in the black haired man’s eyes. They laced fingers and went to the dance floor, grinding and feeling on each other. Jou made sure to keep Varon in his sights but soon decided the spike haired brunette was fine as he was soon chatting up two women.

After a while, Jou danced with more than one guy, finally getting tired after being sandwiched between two muscular twins. He went back over to the bar and pulled at his shirt, trying to get cool. A cool drink was pressed into his hand and he looked up.

Varon grinned at him and downed another shot. “IT’S WATER!” he yelled over the music.

Jou nodded and drank it down, pressing the glass to his throat, eyes closed and sighing. He opened his chocolate eyes and glanced around, searching for a clock. There was a huge, mad digital clock at the far end of the club. It looked like it was counting down to the morning. The green numbers stood out, even in the smoky darkness and Jou leaned over near Varon.

“I’ve got to go! It’s nearly three! I have work!”

He felt the youth’s arm snake around his waist. “WHAT?”

Jou rolled his eyes and pressed closer, talking louder. “V! I have to get to work tomorrow!”

Varon patted his lower back and nodded, indicating they should leave. The Aussie led him out by hand and when they reach the outside, they both took in their fill of the cooling night air.

Varon laughed and motioned Jou over to his bike. “Ya okay? Ya looked loike y’ were gonna dance awl noight!”

Jou nodded, running hands though his sweaty hair and fanning his t-shirt. “It was so fun! You should have gotten out there V!”

“nah…” Varon looked at the sky and waved Jou on behind him. “Let’s go. We’ll get some food to soak up that booze and Oi’ll turn ya loose…”

“Sure.”

They went to an all night diner and got huge helpings off food, sharing a cigarette between sips of Coke and Sprite respectively. Varon finished his eggs, bacon, pancakes, potatoes, and sausage while Jou downed four waffles, three pancakes and a huge omelet. When they finished they sat for a while, looking outside, the bright lights inside providing a perfect contrast to the night, giving them a clear window for people watching. There was really no one, but both boys watched anyway, the cigarette between them running out.

“Ready t’go?” Varon asked, putting out the cigarette.

“Yea…man I’m gonna be no good when the sun comes up.”

“hm.”

The left the diner and zoomed across town, Varon taking back streets that made Jou wonder until they stopped. Varon got off the bike and banged his fist against a street light post, cursing.

“V?” Jou got off the bike and went to his friend. “Varon, you alright man?”

“NO! Fuck no! Oi mean...Oi mean I’m rather figjam*! I mean…How could she! She was out there ‘avin a naughty with some rich Bastard and I don’t mean in the affectionate way…Oi mean…Oi’m not root rat* but…we wasn’t even going at it anymore and then she..” the youth started crying and Jou went over to him.

“Varon, what’d she do? Are ya talkin’ about Mai? What V?”

“She cheated on me Mate!” he sobbed in Jou’s chest. “I saw ‘er in tha car wif some guy…some guy…’Ow long Jou? ‘Ow long?”

He held the Aussie, hugging him and cursing Mai. She’d done the same to him after a fashion, deciding that a freshman really wasn’t worth her trouble, despite all that had gone on during the tournaments.

“Fuck her…fuck her Varon! Don’t waste yer tears man! She’s a bitch!”

Varon pulled back and wiped his eyes. “yeah…yeah…” He sniffed. “Oi just…Oi couldn’t take it man…Oi couldn’t. Those girls tonoight, they remind me of ‘er…Oi gave ‘er a ring Jou! Wasn’t Oi serious?!”

Jou nodded, comforting his friend. “You were. Come on V. I’ll drive ya home. I’ll walk home.”

“Nah, Nah Oi can –”

The blond caught the boy as he stumbled. “I’ll drive.”

They got back on the bike, Varon’s cheek resting against his bike. They quickly made it to Varon’s. Despite the nice exterior, upon actually going upstairs and getting inside, Jou knew Varon wasn’t kidding about his apartment.

It was nice. Nice and small. One room, maybe five and a half tatami mats with a small alcove for a kitchen with a narrow oven and small floor refrigerator. The teen had a small table, a tv in the corner, and his futon already laid out, albeit messy.

“Welcome to the place Mai refused to visit!” Varon tossed his keys on the coffee table and shook his head. “Bitch…”

Jou rubbed the back of his head. “This place ain’t so bad…this is pretty nice actually…”

“Yeah? It is pretty nice…water, heat, gas…all in the rent. It’s small, but Oi loike it…it’s only twenty five thousand actually…a month…”

Jou sighed. He still didn’t have enough. Varon sat down heavily on his futon and crossed his legs.

“It really sucks Jou. Oi mean truly…” he gave a sniffle and motioned for Jou to turn on the lamp and not the over head.

“It saves power…”

Jou did it and sat with Varon on the floor. “Ya gonna be okay man?”

The brunette hiccupped suddenly and Jou sighed as he fell over. Varon was drunk.

“Varon!” Why the hell does booze hit people when they hiccup? “Ya okay man?”

“Mrrrrn…” Varon gave a soft chuckle and Jou shook his head.

“Damn it Varon…” He leaned over the boy, checking his closed eyes. “Damn it all to hell I got work…”

He pulled off the boy’s jeans and took care with his shirt, leaving the boy in boxers. He tried to pull of the boy’s goggles, but was stopped by a limp hand.

“Don’t…” Varon struggled to sit up and looked Jou in the eye. “Don’t.”

“What?” he looked at Varon then suddenly realized he was very close. “V?”

Lips found his and Jou’s eye brows rose. He pulled back and Varon laughed drunkenly. “Wassa matter Jou? Come on! Y’ve got work! T’bed wif me!”

“V, you’re drunk off your ass and ya don’t even like boys. I’ll stay till yer off in dream land -!” he pushed Varon back. “STOP THAT!”

The spiky haired brunette laughed. “Yer blushin’! Loike a Sheila*!”

“Varon, don’t make me knock yer ass out! Go to bed -!”

He was kissed again and pulled down. For a drunk guy, Varon seemed incredibly strong.

“Varon! Let go!”

The Aussie was trying to pull at Jou’s pants and laughing. “Come on, Oi know yer used t’ it, come on! Let’s ‘ave a go…”

Jou froze and shoved away from Varon, steel in his voice. “Don’t you ever fuckin’ say that to me. Don’t you ever fuckin’ say that!”

Varon was on his back, staring at Jou clueless. “Wot?”

“Fuck you Varon…and I’m takin’ yer bike!”

Jou stormed out, slamming the door, his audience already snoring.
