Dinner
I was somehow worried that he would decline my invitation. I don’t know why, though… would it have been all that bad to eat alone…? Maybe it would’ve. I’ve been lonely since I left Egypt. I only have the men that serve me, and they haven’t proven to be all that conversational. It’s nice to have someone to talk to… even if they’re so shy that they don’t talk back very much. At least he’s polite, well mannered, and nice to look at. All pluses.
As we step out of the limo he gapes up at my boat.
“That’s yours…?”
“Yes. My family gave it to me so I could travel. It’s not much, but it can be quite warm and comfortable, once you get used to it.” He chuckles, still looking it over.
“Oh, it’s more than what I imagined, to be honest. You said ‘boat’, and I was thinking something small. This is an entire ‘ship’.” I grin at him and take his hand, pulling him forward, but not out of his daze.
“Come on, you’re not allowed to just stand there and stare at it all evening. I’m hungry!” I tug him up the stairs, onto the deck, and inside. My men don’t seem very pleased that I’ve brought a ‘stranger’ onboard, but I give them a quick glare as a silent command to leave us alone. They have no choice but to obey.
“This place is wonderful…” he whispers as we step into the dining section. The long table in the middle of the room is made of cherry, the chairs matching (of course). The design on the carpet gives the red threads away as from my home.
“Take a seat,” I urge him. “They’ll be bringing the food in just a few minutes.”
“Really…? So soon…?”
“That’s the good thing about the driver in the limo having a cellular phone,” I inform him with a little wink. “He can call ahead and tell them when to expect me, and if I’m hungry or not.”
“Wow… They really treat you well.”
“That’s what they’re there for, after all.”
~~~~~
It’s now obvious why he gave me so much money. He’s like a pharaoh, himself! His family must be very, very wealthy to be able to afford all of this. But then he never looked anything but rich to me- which is probably a different matter…
And, just as he predicted, the food comes. It all seems very foreign to me. It’s no doubtedly what he enjoys eating at home. I don’t blame him for not wanting to enjoy other foods from different places all the time; he must get terribly home-sick traveling all over the world, far away from his real home. I know how it feels…
The food is very good, though, and we eat and talk about all sorts of things. It’s hours later before I insist that I need to leave. He seems terribly crestfallen… He honours my request in spite of it and summons a smile to guide me back out.
“I can just walk,” I try to insist, but the look on his face tells me that he’ll have none of that.
“No.” It was the response I expected. “I will have my driver take you home. It’s too dark… and getting cold.”
“Cold…?” He doesn’t let me argue.
“It’s settled. A car would be much quicker, anyway.” We descend the stairs slowly, but as I near the bottom my eyes lift to see the emerging stars. It’s an obsession… I just love the night… the moon and stars… My lips begin to curve into a smile, but then I trip… and fall. There’s the sudden exhilarating feel of falling, and then an abrupt stop. Strong arms are around me, and the ground… I’m feeling much less of that than I expected. My eyes open, and I realize that the arms are Malik’s… and that he caught me. I stare up into those violet eyes in surprise and mild embaracement, the flushing of my cheeks obvious to me as they warm.
~~~~~
The look in his eyes is adorable. And the blushing, even more so. When he fell, I had to move to catch him. It was luck that we were at the bottom of the stairs, and he only fell the distance of a few precisely into my arms. He’s rather light, too. The jolt only sent me back half a step before I caught my balance again. And the way he stares at me… So curious…
“Thank you…” he finally stutters, pulling his feet the rest of the way beneath him and standing on his own. He looks utterly embaraced. I just smile at him and turn around, guiding him to the car so he can get home.
“Just tell him the way, and he’ll drop you off safe and sound.” Bakura smiles at me and ducks into the limo, placing his case neatly onto his lap and reaffirming that it’s there with him. I start to close the door, then stop myself, refusing to just let go of the only real friend I’ve had in forever. “Bakura… what are you doing tomorrow…?”
As we step out of the limo he gapes up at my boat.
