Death is Just Around the Corner...
"Who would have thought this would happen? Who could have expected any of this, is this even real? I prayed to God that it wasn’t, but it was happening all to fast. The last thing I remember, the first thing he screamed, and the finally breath my Grandpa took as he lay dead on the floor…"
Chapter 1: “Death is just around the corner”
In a small village outside the mountains of North Tremain, snow drops fall from the spacious sky. Morning dew could be seen dripping from the trees above and onto the tiny cabin below. They gently land upon the nose of an elderly man walking outside the door, sending a tiny chill throughout his body. He took in a deep breath and smelled the fresh air around him; smiling at another glorious day. Grandpa Mouto then picked up the ax lying besides the house and headed for the forest just beyond the hill, whistling a happy little tune as he left to chop some wood. Inside, two boys played about with a bean bag sac kicking back and forth to each other. The first was a short multi colored hair lad named Yugi Mouto, “This ones all yours Jou!”
“I got it Yug!” Jou laughed as he caught the bag with his foot. Jounouchi was the other boy who was a lot taller then his friend, but also not as bright. He had short blonde hair and a big grin across his face, “See if you can catch this one!” Jou smirked as he kicked the bean bag high into the air. “No fair Jou!” Yugi cried as he ran to make it in time before it hit the ground. Jounouchi busted up laughing as he watched his friend fall flat on his face and have the sac whack him afterwards, “I love this game!” He boasted wiping the tears from his milk-brown eyes.
Jounouchi was Yugi’s best friend, and like a big brother to him. He was always at their home, helping out his Grandpa and protecting Yugi from the local bullies in town. They knew they would always be together, no matter what may happen….
Yugi grunted as he pushed himself off the floor, and wiped the dust from his clothes. “Let’s play something else okay Jou? I’m kinda getting tired of this game.” Yugi’s violet eyes pleaded with him, hoping his pal would find mercy. “Okay, okay, I’ll be nice! Hmmm…how about we go outside and play in the snow?” Jounouchi suggested knowing Yugi would love the idea. And sure enough, the young boy’s eyes lit up like a candle as he dashed for his jacket and shoes (getting ready in matter of seconds). “I’M READY!” Yugi shouted excitingly bouncing up and down in anticipation. Jou just shook his head, “It’s like he’s never been outside in the snow before.” He smiled grabbing his coat. This was nothing new to Jounouchi, little Yugi was always like this, even as a child. Growing up with the rambunctious youth, he sometimes forgot they were the same age as each other. The two stepped outside and Yugi instantly ran ahead and held his arms out wide, catching the snow flakes as they fell. Jou followed him and held his arms out to, playfully snatching the flakes before Yugi could (making little Yug frown).
“Jou stop that!” Yugi pouted trying to sound serious. Suddenly a yell was heard from the forest, making the two jump back a bit. “What…what was that?” Jou gulped (thinking it’s a ghost). Yugi became pale as he knew exactly what it was, “GRANDPA!” He screamed rushing towards the woods (with Jounouchi following right behind him). Terror flashed through little Yugi’s mind, fearing the worst for his only family. “Grandpa, please be alright!” He thought racing past the branches, not realizing they were smacking right back into Jou. Yugi stopped as he came to a clearing, seeing his Grandpa hunched over and near the ground. “Oh my God, he’s hurt!” Yugi could only think as he ran up behind him. But his lavender eyes suddenly grew wide, as he saw why his Grandpa was like that. Jounouchi finally caught up to Yugi, desperately trying to catch his breath. “Yu….Gah! Grand…Pah, Oooh – Kay….Good?” Jou spat out not realizing where their attention was. His eyes trailed down from Yugi to the horrific scene below, nearly knocking the wind out of him again.
There in his arms, lay the body of a young boy. Blood stained his pale figure embedded in the snow, as his fragile self clung to dear life. Jou covered his mouth in shock as he tried to overlook what appeared to be bruises and whip marks surrounding the unconscious boy’s entire body, making him sick to his stomach. Yugi threw off his jacket and quickly wrapped it around the young man, trying every way possible to keep him alive. “Oh my God! Grandpa, what happened? Who did this?” Yugi practically shouted trying to lift the boy up (but to no avail). Grandpa Mouto shook his head and got up from his spot, “I found him like this Yugi while I was cutting some wood, but I think….I think we’re to late.” He muttered looking away. Yugi’s eyes filled with tears as he heard his Grandpa utter those last words, “No….it can’t be Grandpa, he just can’t! He’s just a kid, like me. He just….” Yugi felt a hand gently tap his shoulder as Jou pushed aside his friend and lifted the hikari up. “There’s always a chance, we just got to give him one.” Jounouchi spoke carrying him back to the cabin. “Even if the odds are slim, he may still have a chance if we can keep him warm!” Yugi smiled at Jou’s encouragement and wiped his tears away, “Thank you Jou, you’re absolutely right!”
“Am I ever wrong?” Jou grinned as the three hurried back to the house to help the dying angel, unaware the danger and consequences they were all about to face because of it….
