Dragon in the Meijer
A/N: A special treat for my readers this Christmas, while I’m working on this I wont be working on ‘The Masks We Wear’ but there will be at least three chapter updates in January.
Chapter 1 - December Chill
There was always a cold chill in the air of Domino this time of year. But come snow, sleet, hail or heat the young blonde whizzing threw the traffic was not going to be late for work. The blonde had worked hard for the job he held and even though the pay was meagre and he knew he was more qualified for a better paying job he wouldn’t trade in any kind of paycheque for what he got in this job.
He got to watch over the one he could never protect when he wanted to protect them. He was able to watch over the one he knew would never be able to share his feelings, but just being his employer was enough to make him happy.
The old push bike came to a crashing stop outside the Kaiba Corp building sending its rider crashing into a nearby pile of rubbish bags.
“Your lucky its trash day Joey, that look like it hurt.” commented a tall brunette as he calmly walked over to the pile of trash with two cups of coffee from the coffee machine in he guard station, it was burnt and bitter but at least it was hot which was all that mattered this time of year. The guards were known to pour a cup just to have something warm in there hands without drinking the stuff, only one person was brave enough to drink down this crap they labelled coffee.
The blonde pulled himself out of last weeks lunch left over and smiled up at his assistant and night officer Tristan Taylor “Damn piece of crap, by Christmas I’ll have that motor bike… hey coffee thanks Tristan.” the blonde snatched the Styr phone cup from Tristan and chugged down the hot beverage before pocking out his now burnt tongue.
“HOT!” he shrieked “how can you guys drink it that hot.” grumbled the blonde as he attempted to catch snowflakes on his tongue in an attempt to cool it.
“You’re the only one brave enough to drink the stuff Joey.” yawned Tristan
“How much longer till the end of your shift?” asked Joey as the pair made their way to the guard station the blonde pushing his bike with them, last time he had left a bike where he had landed the garbage truck had taken the bike as well, by the time the blonde could get to the city dump it had already been crushed with the rest of the days rubbish.
“I still got another forty-five minutes, then your shift starts, damn I wish Kaiba would put a bit more money into security so you could hire a few more guys, you look more tired than me.” it wasn’t until they were in the guard station that he noticed the heavy bags under the blondes eyes.
“I was at the hospital again last night till just after one thirty.” said Joey with a heavy sigh. “The doctors are doing all they can, but without the surgery her chances are getting slim, she could permantly lose her eyesight if we wait much longer.”
“That bad huh? What about you parents?”
“There’s no way we’re gonna get any money out of the old man, his still pissed about me testifying at the court case, I actually think the bastard enjoys seeing her in pain because he knows it causes me pain. As for mum well she’s working three jobs at the moment and where still five thousand short.”
“Mate that’s harsh, the Christmas bonus won’t even make a dent in that.”
“Life is a harsh mistress, just learn to smile and agree with her whenever possible.” smiled the blonde as he left the guard station to make his way into the change room inside for employees.
As Tristan watched his boss leave he couldn’t but think ‘if you can smile through it Joey anyone can’
Elsewhere in the Kaiba Corp building however someone was not smiling he was currently yelling into a phone.
“I don’t want your damn excuses, either you get those orders in store by the specified date or look else where for work, its that simple.”
The latest version of the Kaiba Corp duel disc was due in stores in less than a week, they were the planned hottest seller in the gaming world this year. If they didn’t go I store now they were going to be beaten once again by Industrial Illusions inferior product.
“You need new wheels for the trucks? Bullshit those wheels were replaced less than a month ago! Get them there on time or else no excuses!” he was done with this conversation and he slammed down the phone to prove his point.
“Useless the lot of them, if they needed snow tires they should have ordered them a month ago when they got the new tires, they are not cheap.” Seto mumbled to himself.
Seto Kaiba domino city’s richest man and CEO of the multi billion dollar company Kaiba Corp. And the man didn’t just have money he had looks as well. He was tall had pale skin that looked like porcelain and a stomach that even a gymnast would envy. A lot of people said he had everything, everyone else said he had a personality as cold as his ice blue stare.
As the CEO sat back in his chair and attempted to get a little shut eye it felt like it was past midnight, just as he was dozing off however the phone rang again.
“What part of no….”
“Seto?” came a soft voice on the other end of the phone, it was his little brother
“What are you doing up this late?” asked the brunette as he ran his hand threw his hair in an attempt to calm himself.
“It’s almost six am, I just went to wake you up and you weren’t there so I called the office.” said the teenager.
“Sorry I lost track of time I suppose, things get crazy this time of year remember?”
“I guess, it’s just school holidays start today can I come visit later on? I can bring you some breakfast if you like.” offered the boy, the sadness was obvious in his voice, all he wanted was to see his brother.
“Breakfast with you would be wonderful, but it will have to wait I have an 8am appointment that won’t finish till ten.”
“Then I’ll be there at ten.” replied Mokuba before hanging up the phone.
As the CEO hang up the phone a gentle smile crossed his lips that turned to a frown. As much as he wanted to spend time with his little brother the company had to come first. Mokuba deserved the best something that he himself had missed out on growing up and to get the best certain sacrifices had to be made.
