Heartbeat
To Yuugi the sound of a heartbeat was much more than the sound of a vital organ pumping blood through someone’s veins. It was the sound of music. A melody that would put him to sleep at night, telling him that he would be safe. It told him there was someone who would protect him.
It was proof that Yami, the one he loved was alive. That he was there, breathing, and would never leave him. He would never have to go inside the darkness of the puzzle because he was no longer a spirit, but a human of flesh and blood. It was the first thing he heard when he woke in the morning and the last thing he knew before sleep would claim him.
To Yuugi it was special. It was like a CD of music. Each new track was a different song. Each new song was a new emotion. Each new emotion was something to treasure.
He could still remember the songs of each emotion as they were discovered. The steady rhythm of happiness, the slight skipping tune as he told Yami how much he loved him. The unsteady hum of fear as Yami realised he might not be able to stay, that he might have to venture into the afterlife after his destiny was complete, the fast, almost frantic pace as they made love for the first time. Showing, proving to each other how much they loved one another.
Yuugi smiled as he laid his head on Yami chest, intently listening to the sound that he loved so much. Sometimes it felt like the symphony of sound was created just for him. That Yami’s heart only beat for him.
Breaking the silence, Yami finally decided to ask what he had wanted to for so long but hadn’t. “What are you doing?”
Yuugi kissed his bare chest as he answered softly, “I’m listening to your heartbeat—the music of your soul.”
“It’s because of you,” Yami whispered. “You freed me from the darkness, you’re the reason that I chose to stay behind. You’re the reason that I live. If it is the music of my soul, then it is only because you are my other half. My light.”
Violet eyes sparkled in happiness, as his own heart beat in a steady rhythm echoing the one below him, portraying a gorgeous symphony. Each listening to a heart that beat only for them.
