Disclaimer:
I do not own Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's and no money is made from this story.
Part One: Dragon
Title with regards to "A Companion to Wolves" by Sarah Monette, a book you should all read. I did get the idea to this story after reading it, but the odea of having a human bond to some sort of creature is hardly unique to that specific work of fiction (I can think of "His Dark Materials", The Valdemar Novels and Digimon, on top of my head). Still, though I'd mention it. XD
Part One: Dragon
The black haired boy, a battered looking little guy of perhaps five years, clutched the white creature closer to his chest as the adults gathered around him, circling him like predators. He looked about as scabby and filthy as any other child growing up on the streets of Satellite, his dark hair sticking up in every possible direction as if they had never even seen a brush from a distance.
The thing in his arms was another matter entirely: Its white scales shimmered in the weak light of the street lamp and even under these conditions the onlookers could imagine its beauty. Whenever it moved its tiny wings or the thin tail the glittery scales seemed to shift between white, silver and ice blue and its voice was clear and melodious.
Dragons were rare, especially in Satellite. People bonded to more common monsters, if at all. The lords and ladies from Neo Domino City didn't consider the inhabitants of Satellite worthy of duelist status and would never face them in a duel, even if they were allowed to travel past the borders of their trash made home, but that didn't mean they couldn't duel amongst themselves.
Still, satellites didn't bond to dragons. It just didn't happen.
“Where did you find it anyway?“, a young man in his late teens demanded to know, taking a step towards the child that, being completely surrounded, had nowhere to get away from him, “Monsters like that one must come from the city. Stole it, didn't you?“
The boy shook his head vehemently, turning away from the man but not saying anything.
An elderly man laid a hand on the younger one's shoulder, apparently meaning to calm him down. “Now, now, I'm sure the kid did nothing of the sort. Never heard of this one getting into any trouble–“
“Oh, doesn't he, now?”, the teen replied with a sneer, “How come then whenever something's up with the brats he's right in the middle of it, huh? I say he's been sticking his nose into city crap and snatched the beast.”
The white dragon in the boy's arms gave a shrill, angry tone, but remained otherwise still.
“I didn't steal her. We're bonded.”, explained the boy with a trembling but stubborn voice.
That caused agitated chatter among the adults and the old man sighed. “There's nothing can be done about it then anyway. What would you have us do, call security?”
“Whatever.”, he spat, “Just make sure the snobs up in the city don't ever get to know we got dragons down here. Nothing but more trouble is all I'm saying.”, and with that he and turned around, a huge black cat adorned with golden ornaments at his heel.
The boy seemed to gather some confidence at the retreat of his adversary, smiling at the little dragon he was holding. “She says, her name is Stardust.”, he announced happily, letting her nip at the collar of his tattered shirt.
It took him a moment to realize that all chatter had ceased and that everyone was staring at him intently. The man with the cat-monster looked over his shoulder. “She? You bonded to a she-dragon?”
The boy glanced up from under his wild bangs, a look of defiance on his face. “Yeah. So?”, he shot back sullenly.
The man chuckled, but it wasn't friendly, it sounded mean and nasty. “Oh boy, you sure have a way of getting yourself into trouble.”, he said ominously, laughing as he walked away.
~End Part 1
I'd also like to thank Molly, who kind of beta'd the thing and came up with this little piece of humor:
“You bonded to a she-dragon?”
“Yeah, so?”
“That's against the rules, isn't it?”
“Screw the rules, I have Stardust!”
Gotta love YGO TAS. =)
