AN: Random oneshot I posted on my LJ a while back. Figured since I'm feeling industrious I'd put it here to further clutter the internet with random fandom garble. I know it's not particularly interesting, but it was my attempt to get some thoughts out about Kaiba and Yugi in the vain hope of jump-starting the creative juices. It didn't work, but whatever *shruggs*.

Yugi lay stretched across Kaiba’s body completely sated after their lovemaking Kaiba’s hand running gently through his spiky multicolored hair. Yugi never would have believed before that night that the taller boy was capable of such tender acts of affection, but there seemed to be a lot about Kaiba that was unexpected. He sighed and nuzzled against his new lover’s chest contentedly.

“There’s something I don’t understand, Yugi.” Kaiba’s voice was loud and harsh against the silence of the room and the softness of the sheets. “Why me?”

Yugi pushed himself into a more upright position and cocked his head at the brunette. “What do you mean?”

“Why choose me as a lover? I’ve never done anything kind for you. I’ve always mocked and discouraged you. I tried to kill you. I’m the least logical person to take as a lover.”

He wanted to tell Kaiba that he was wrong, that there had been times that he had been kind and helpful, but Kaiba’s mind was one of numbers and statistics and the times he had been an obstacle to Yugi’s goals far outnumbered the times he’d helped.

So why had Yugi chosen him? He had friends who were gentle and empathetic towards him and he loved each and every one of them with all his soul. He could have easily been more than content with any of them. What made Kaiba different? He didn’t feel any different towards him than any of his friends, but Kaiba needed him. His only source of support was his brother, but how could Mokuba support him with Kaiba always trying so hard to be invulnerable for him? He needed someone in his life to regard as an equal, someone he wouldn’t have to worry about or protect and Yugi knew he fit that role. Yugi could be the person he could lean on when the world became too much, the person to play video games with when he needed to stop being CEO of Kaiba Corp for just a few hours, the person who says “welcome home” and goes to bed with him each night. Someone had to fill the role Mokuba couldn’t. Who was there other than Yugi?

Kaiba was held Yugi’s gaze waiting expectantly for the reply. Finally Yugi smiled, a bright smile full of all the feelings in his soul that he gladly poured onto Kaiba for his sake alone.

“I love you.”
