Vacation!

By Mou Hitori no Akari

One- Our Simple Plan

"I need a break!" Jounouchi yelled. His friends gave him a skeptical glance, but they all couldn't disagree on that note. It was true. They needed a vacation. After all, school was close to finishing in about a week. But anticipation, and even impatience coursed through their veins, and like all of them, they just couldn't wait to get out.

Who could blame them?

"Being in school is tiring. Fifty-two weeks out of the year? Just who invented that idea?" Honda interceded, his arm casually wrapped around Anzu's shoulder. "In my day, I didn't bother with such trivial nonsense like 'school'." Bakura said, and Ryou rolled his eyes.

"That's because you were pilfering dead people's things for a living. Remember?" Ryou cut in. Bakura gave him a bored glance, and shrugged. "That too." He said simply, playing with an earring hanging from the lobe of his ear.

"So what we should do is plan a vacation, guys!" Yugi chimed. He gave a broad smile, pointing his finger in the air in an as-a-matter-of-fact manner, and Yami gave a nod. "We should. It would be good for us. We have been here so long for the past couple of summers."

"Yeah, true, true." Jou said thoughtfully. The bell had signaled the end of the day, and they shuffled out into the cool air of the summer day.

As promised, they did decide their plans, and they did plan feverishly, as the days counted down.

"So where do ya think we should go?" Jou said, as they walked from the arcade on a Saturday with Honda, and Otogi. "Dunno, really..." Honda answered, his hands in his pockets. He shrugged his shoulders, and let out a sigh. "It seemed like such a good idea at the time. And now, with school ending... and the fees to make this plan fly... I dunno." Honda seemed uncertain, and Jou frowned.

"Don't tell me you're droppin' dis!" Jou stared at Honda, halting. "Dude, I thought you was goin'."

"Yeah, I was--I mean, I want to. But, you know--"

"Know what!"

"Well, Anzu said she doesn't think she wants to go, and--" He kicked at the pavement, staring at the ground.

"You can't be serious, man. No way are you gonna miss this!" Jou gave a scoff, and crossed his arms in disapproval. "She's jockin' your strap, man." Honda blushed, Otogi snorted, and Jou wagged his finger at him. "You know what Anzu's problem is? It isn't because she doesn't think she can go," They continued to walk, Jou's arms suspended behind his head. "It's 'cause she had a crush on Yami, that's what."

At that, Honda was silent, his eyes cast down, as they continued to walk along the sidewalk to Yugi and Yami's house. When Jou was way ahead of them, Otogi kept his pace with Honda, his hands in his pockets. "Honda?" Otogi murmured when he thought Jou was out of earshot. "Is... is that true?"

It took a while for Honda to answer, but he nodded quickly, hesitantly, and Otogi shook his head. "But she seems happy with you, you know."

"Sometimes, I don't think so." Honda muttered, and Otogi gave a solemn smile, patting him awkwardly on the back.

"If so," He leaned in closer, close to the shell of Honda's ear, his lips gliding swiftly over it. "then you deserve more than that."

Otogi picked up the pace, running after Jou. "Hey, Jou! Wait up!"

Honda ran after the two, catching up to them. Those words floated through his mind. Maybe Otogi was right. He did deserve more than what he was in now.

"Alright, Alright! Settle down, everyone." Yugi said, standing on the couch. Everyone gave Yugi their immediate attention, but Bakura was still arguing with Ryou in the background. Ryou gave the look of one who was being harrassed, and it wouldn't be long until Ryou lost his temper.

"Bakura!" Yami growled, and Bakura paused in his argument, giving Yami a rude glance.

"My hikari is speaking, tombrobber. I suggest you be quiet." Yami crossed his arms and legs on the couch, and watched Yugi with an affectionate gaze that only he would give for his hikari. Yugi smiled.

"Alright, guys. I hear we are having some problems--"

"More like money issues." Bakura mumbled underneath his breath, and Ryou jabbed him in the ribs.

"Some problems," Yugi continued, "with the trip. What seems to be the problem?"

"Well first of all," Jou began by raising his hand. "it is a money issue. And not only dat, but some of us are startin' to have doubts about goin'!"

Jou locked gazes with Honda, until Honda was forced to turn away.

"We all are in this, guys. It's all of us, or none of us. We need each and everyone of you to pitch in. After all, what's a vacation with each other if one of us stays home? If it's a money issue, then we'll solve it. But we are going on this trip." Yugi said.

"That still doesn't make the money problem go away, Yug'." Jou said, followed by a couple of 'yeahs'.

"Then what do you suggest, then, Jou?"

"I dunno! But we're runnin' out on time, guys. We need like a back up plan or somethin'." Jou sighed, looking at his watch. "Look, we can't talk all day about dis, and I gotta go to work soon, so we'll meet tomorrow on dis, aight?"

"Sure, whenever."

Jou got off the floor, and headed for the foyer, the sound of the door closing soon after.

"We need another plan, and soon." With that, heads nodded in agreement.

Jou dismounted his motorcycle, removing the helmet on his head. He shook his head, his blond hair cascading over his broad shoulders. He took the keys out of the ignition, and sat for a while. He worked a shift at the local grocery store as a cashier, and it may not have been the best job on the planet, but it was enough to get by comfortably with only his father and him living together.

He walked towards the store, pressing the alarm over his shoulder as he entered the double doors.

"Katsuya!" Jou rolled his eyes, and turned around. "Yes, Mr. Inoue?" He plastered a smile on his face, staring into black eyes that belonged to a pudgy face. "You're late, boy." He said, suspending his fists over his hips. He looked strangely like a rooster ready to attack, and it took Jou everything not to laugh in his face.

"Yeah, yeah, I know. I won't do it again, sir." He said with a serious face, somethng that was almost impossible to keep on. He watched his boss go, and he let out a few chuckles, walking to his register. He placed on his uniform apron, and did his usual routine, an old lady placing her groceries on the conveyer belt.

He idly pressed the various buttons from memory, boringly passing the items over the scanner. "That'll be 2,012 yen." He said, and the lady handed him the money. He helped her with her bags, and stood at his register once more.

"Aw, c'mon, Seto!" He heard a familiar voice say, and he looked up. He saw the Kaiba brothers, Seto and Mokuba, walk up through the lane, Mokuba dragging a harassed Seto in his wake.

Jou observed them with a raised brow, and Mokuba locked eyes with Jou. "Jou!" He squealed, running up to the register. "Jou, I didn't know you work here!" He smiled. "Yeah, I do. Uh," He pointed to Seto. "What are ya doin' here?" Jou asked.

"It's called--" Knowing his brother was already in a foul mood, and was about to say something ugly, he cut in. 'You know big brother. He hasn't stepped foot into a grocery store in centuries. So I decided we would get the groceries this time, and give our butler a break today."

"Oh, really?" Jou said.

"He has this idea that all work and no play makes him better." Mokuba flipped a lock of hair over his shoulder. Seto gave his brother an annoyed look, crossing his arms. It was the first time he had seen Seto with actual normal clothes on, rather than his trenchcoats donned with silver buckles. He wore a plain black t-shirt, and some loose jeans, with some black Reeboks.

One could say they could hardly recognize the teen CEO. He looked younger, and less wordly. Those clothes accented him much better than his usual clothing. There was no point in saying anything, Jou thought in amusement, because he knew Kaiba didn't care.

"So, doing anything this summer, Jou?"

"Yeah, my friends and I are plannin' to go to Okinawa." Jou scratched his head for a second, and his eyes brightened with an idea. "Say," Jou started, "why don't you guys come with us?"

Mokuba's eyes lighted up with glee, and Seto's eyes narrowed. "That would be great! Seto, can we? Can we?" He tugged at Seto's sleeve, jumping up and down. Seto sighed, and placed his hand on Mokuba's head, stopping the little boy from bouncing. "No, Mokuba." He said sternly. Mokuba tugged at his sleeve relentlessly, resorting to whining.

"We don't go anywhere fun! We always go somewhere you want to go!" Mokuba crossed his arms, mumbling.

"I thought you wanted to go to Hawaii!" Seto growled, taken aback. "I want to be where they are! They always have fun. Why don't you hang with them?" Mokuba's question startled him.

He opened his mouth to answer him, to tell him that he was wrong, to tell him that he had no need for friends. But the answer never came. He couldn't answer right away because he wondered to himself the very same question.

Because they're losers... because they don't suit me... I don't need them... they get on my damn nerves...

Because they have each other, and I have no one...

He looked up, and realized that both Mokuba and Jou were waiting for his answer. How can he say no?

'I have my reasons,' Seto thought.

There was no reason.

So with logic in mind, he nodded reluctantly. "Ok," He said slowly, uncertainly, watching his baby brother's eyes light up. "We'll go."

"YES!" Mokuba yelled, startling everyone within radius. "I love you, big brother!" He wooted, and ran in circles. Seto sighed, and handed Jou cash. "When are you planning on going?"

Jou smiled. "Da day after school ends. We're meetin' at Yug's house." He took the cash, and inspected it. "Man, Kaiba, you only bought a couple of things here. This ain't Versace." Seto blushed, and searched his wallet for smaller bills. He pulled out his checkbook instead, pulling out a credit card with finesse, twirling it quickly in his hand before passing it through the debit machine slot. Jou watched him, amazed.

"Cash back?" Jou said, and Kaiba shook his head, grabbing the groceries.

"See you then?" Jou said, and Kaiba nodded, letting Mokuba happily tug him along behind him, and through the double doors.

He watched the clock, bored out of his mind. He couldn't wait to talk with Yugi.
