Memories of Love Not Forgotten
The room was bathed in the light of the morning sun as a lone figure walked over to the bed and sat down.
As he looked down, a single tear rolled down his cheek. His precious puppy, Joey Wheeler, was asleep in an endless sleep.
The blond had been in a coma for almost a year now. Everything had happened so fast. Seto hadn't even been able to stop anything from happening...
Joey and Seto were happy to say that they had been partners for almost two years and still going strong. Seto had rescued his puppy from an abusive father and they were married to one another soon after. All of their friends had attended the joyous day. When the blond’s father had been put away, for once in his life Joey had felt safe...secure...
On that fateful morning, Joey came rushing down the stairs, his excitement visibly seen. Seto looked up from working on one of his papers and smirked.
“What’s up, Puppy?”
On hearing the greeting, Joey pouted before smiling. Puppy was just a nickname the other had given him while they were still going to high school.
Joey walked up and threw his arms around his husband, giving him a hug and a tender kiss.
“Two years we’ve been together, TWO YEARS!”
At that moment Mokuba walked in and smiled. The couple didn't see him, but were interrupting from going further by a coughing from behind them. They jumped and separated, their cheeks a pale pink.
“Morning Big Brother, Joey!”
“Morning.” They answered back together.
Mokuba had just recently turned sixteen and was in his junior year over at Domino High School. He knew that his brother was happy, and wanted nothing but the best for him.
“Brother?”
“Yes Mokuba?”
“Can I spend the night over at friends?” Seto looked at his brother, already knowing that this was his way of letting him and Joey have some alone time.
“Yes you can.”
“Thanks Brother and Happy Anniversary!”
A nurse walked into the room, quickly checking on her patient before greeting the other man.
“Good morning Mr. Kaiba.” Seto looked up and nodded. As she left, Seto looked once again at his puppy, his lover, his partner, his friend.
All Seto wanted was to see his puppy open his eyes, hear his voice, and feel his warm embrace. He would always remember that day, the day his life changed forever...
As Seto left for the office, Joey decided to do some shopping. He wanted tonight to be special. Suddenly the phone rang and he picked it up… his face went white when he heard who was on the other end…
“Hello son, miss me?”
His disbelief clear on his face, Joey tried not to panic as he heard his father's voice.
“How did you get out of prison and what are you doing calling me?” Joey asked, his voice showing that he was scared, that he didn’t know what to do. “How did you get this number?”
“I’m coming to finish what I started.” Joey could hear the threat in his father’s voice; the cruel, sadistic laughter that followed only hurt and scared him more.
Joey hung up the phone as if it had burnt his hand. Seto, he had to call Seto.
---
Seto stopped typing on his laptop and leaned back in his chair when his secretary buzzed him.
“Yes?”
“Call for you on line one, sir.”
“Who is it, I’m busy.”
“A Joey Wheeler, sir.”
“Thank you.” Seto picked up the phone before questioning his puppy. “Joey, is everything alright?”
“He’s back.”
Seto instantly knew something was wrong when he clearly heard the panic in Joey's voice.
“Who’s back?”
The feeling in his gut, however, told him he already knew.
“My father, he called and said he would finish what he started.”
“I’ll be right there.” As he left, he told his secretary he had an emergency at home and to cancel all of his appointments for the next couple of days.
Unbeknownst to the two lovers, a dark shadow waited outside the mansion. He was waiting for someone.
As Seto raced back home, he placed a call to the police. He wanted to know why he hadn’t been informed of the fact that Joey’s father was on the streets and not locked up.
The limo came up to the mansion where he quickly jumped out and ran to the front door before noticing that it was wide open. A sudden dreadful feeling seized him as he screamed for the blond.
“JOEY! PUPPY!” He yelled as he slammed the door to their bedroom open; the site he saw made his heart freeze.
There, in a pool of blood, laid his blond puppy with his eyes open; his beautiful, honey-colored eyes; devoid of all life...
“Brother?” Seto looked up and saw Mokuba standing there, smiling weakly. “Any change?” Seto looked at the very, still figure lying on the bed before looking back at his brother.
“No” Seto said, tears brimming his eyes.
Mokuba felt for his brother and went to him to give him a hug. At that moment, Serenity walked in. She loved her brother very much and when she looked at Seto, she knew that nothing had changed. They stayed for a short time, comforting one another then leaving.
Seto once again stared at his blonde puppy before reaching up and gently stroked his hair. “I love you...please come back to me...”
Suddenly, he saw what he thought was a movement. A glimmer of hope sparked as Seto saw this, his voice already calling out for the nurse.
The nurse came running in and quickly told of what Seto had seen, before she yelled for the doctor.
His attention was soon brought to the man of his puppy’s nightmares as he noticed the gun in the corner of his eye. Scowling at the man, Seto demanded an explanation.
“What are you doing here? How did you get in?”
Joey’s father’s smirked. “The maid let me in.” That’s when Seto saw the second body; she must've been shot shortly after showing the elder Wheeler where Joey was.
Seto, by this time, was very angry.
He lunged at the man, the gun accidentally going off and hit Seto in the arm. Looking down at his coat, he noticed that it was gradually turning red. The older man laughed, sneering at the other.
“Oh, did little fag boy get hurt?” The convict continued laughing, only making Seto's anger grow until he could no longer control it.
Catching him off guard, the CEO tackled the criminal. Joey’s father went flying across the room, hitting his head against the wall and fell to the floor, unconscious. Seto kicked the gun away, picked up the phone and called the police. He then walked over to Joey and collapsed into the darkness of sleep...
The doctor came rushing into the room where Seto was holding Joey’s hand, repeating the words “Please move, Joey...I love you...” over and over again as he cried.
Seto moved out of the way as the two hospital workers checked the blond over; the memory of that day continuing in his mind...
They had found them in Seto and Joey's bedroom, lying in a huge puddle of blood. Seto and Joey were both quickly rushed to the hospital and the man that had tried to kill them was taken into custody.
Mokuba arrived at the hospital with all of the Kaiba's friends, running to the entry hall to learn of what was happening. The nurse sitting there told him they were both in surgery.
Yugi sat down, tears sliding down his face. Yami walked up and put an arm around his hikari in comfort. Hearing the sound of pounding feet, everyone looked up to see that Serenity and Mai had finally gotten there.
Seto and Joey were in surgery for a long time before everyone was told that his operation was finished and had gone well. Mokuba and Serenity (since they were family) went in first.
The CEO was lying on the bed with his eyes closed when, suddenly, he shot up and yelled out for Joey. That’s when he saw Mokuba and that he had been crying.
“Seto… are you alright, big brother?”
“What happened?” As Seto looked at Mokuba and Serenity, he wondered if he should tell them.
“Please… what happened?” Seto looked at Serenity; they deserved to know. He sighed. Seto knew he couldn’t keep this from them.
“Joey’s father.”
Soon, the nurse came in and told them that Seto needed to rest. Mokuba turned back to his brother, giving him a hug before saying that he'd be back later. Seto nodded and then he was alone.
As Mokuba and Serenity left the room and returned to the lobby, Yami asked about Seto.
“He’ll be ok,” Mokuba said, pausing to add, “But he's dying of a broken heart…”
A second later, the doctor came out and looked at the huge group filling the lobby. “Is there someone here for Joey Wheeler?” Mokuba walked up and spoke to the doctor
The doctor left and the teen came back to the group with visible tears pouring from his eyes. “Joey’s in a coma...and they don’t know if he will come out of it... ”
The doctor walked over to the CEO, telling him that Joey could be coming out of his coma. For the first time in a year, Seto smiled and knew there was hope… his puppy was coming back to him.
“How long?” Seto questioned.
“A day, a week. It’s very hard to tell,” the doctor answered.
“Don’t tell anyone about this, I don’t want to get their hopes up.” The doctor looked at him and nodded, he understood. Seto walked back to the bed and kissed Joey on the forehead, picked up his hands to hold and whispered, “Come back to me, Puppy...Come back to me...”
Seto was in the hospital for a week before he was released. During his stay, he had been told that Joey had fallen into a coma and they didn't know when he'd awaken.
As he walked into the room where Joey was laying, he saddened as he looked at all the tubes and wires that came from the medical equipment hooked up to the blond. 'He looked so pale and gaunt...' Seto thought, pulling a chair closer to the bed to sit near his husband.
“I’m so sorry...I didn’t make it in time...I’m so sorry...” Feeling a hand on his shoulder, Seto turned to see that it was Yami.
“It’s not your fault, Kaiba.” The CEO didn't say anything; dislodging the ex-pharaoh's hand, Seto sat back and closed his eyes.
“I promised to protect him; protect my puppy...” Seto paused, deep in thought. “Now he’s laying here...because of me.”
“Kaiba, don’t blame yourself, you didn’t know this would happen.” Seto looked up at him, scowling.
“Maybe not, but he still got hurt!” Following that statement, Seto asked to be left alone.
He got back home and found all the blood had been cleaned up. He set up a room in the mansion for Joey to be nearby, paying for a nurse to visit the mansion to check up on the blond every few hours.
So began his long wait to see his golden-haired, honey-eyed, puppy awake and smiling...
During the following year, Serenity had moved in, wanting to keep watch over her brother and help whenever she could. Seto started turning more and more of his Corporation's work over to his brother; he wasn’t going to leave his puppy.
That day, the CEO hoped that the blond was going to be ok. Moving so that he was sitting beside his husband, the brunet laid his head down and tried to have a light doze...
~Seto’s Dream~
Seto looked around, wondering where he was. “Pup, where are you?!”
“Right here...”
Seto turned around to see Joey; his eyes sparkling, his smile as bright as the sun and full of energy.
“I missed you, Pup.” Seto told Joey.
“Me too.”
“Come back with me,” Seto pleaded.
“I can’t...” Joey said, softly.
“Why can’t you?
“I came back to say I love you and goodbye.”
At this, Seto started to cry. “NO, I need you!”
Smiling, Joey looked at Seto and pulled him into an embrace, holding him close. They looked into each other's eyes and drew closer, their lips meeting one another in a passionate kiss.
They found him later that day holding Joey in a loving embrace. He had died at the same time with his precious puppy. The news reports said he had died of unknown causes but those closest knew it was from a broken heart. Mokuba married Serenity and their children were always told of the memories of love not forgotten…
It is said the movements that Seto saw was Joey’s way of telling Seto that he was coming back to say good-bye. When no other movements came from the blond, it crushed had him. He had gathered Joey in his arms, closed his eyes and cried as his heart broke.
They say if you listen close enough you can here them laughing and talking, and at times, even see them walking with their arms around each other, never to be separated again.
As long as there is love, there is hope that love can be eternal and, for Seto and Joey, their love is truly eternal. Their memory will live on in the people who loved them the most. For this, their love will never be forgotten. It will live on.
