Tapestry

It was raining in Domino City; not a heavy rain but a gentle, soothing rain, warm and comforting. It was raining that night as well, the night when tragedy struck a small group of friends, their lives changed forever.

A lone figure pulled up to Domino Cemetery, a routine he had been doing every night since it had happen. The deaths of four people he held dear. It seemed no one but him came to visit; not family, not other friends, no one. He carried four white roses, one for each grave. As he put them onto the graves, he cried, asking the gods why it had to happen. They had their whole life to look forward to, why was it cut as short as it was?

He thought back to the night the accident happened. Yuugi had just been closing the shop when his grandfather rushed in, telling him there had been a car accident and all the occupants had died. “Who was in the car?” Yuugi inquired, looking at the television. As he watched, he noticed the license plate, the word 'KAIBA' written in a bold, blue color on it. At that moment, the phone rang; it was Honda, one of Yuugi’s best friends.

“Yuugi, did you see the news?”

Soon, the news anchorman listed of the occupants of the accident. “We have just gotten news that the occupants of the car are as follows: Seto Kaiba, founder of Kaiba Corporation, his boyfriend Katsuya Jounouchi, and their siblings Shizuka Jounouchi and Mokuba Kaiba. All died on impact.”

Yuugi couldn’t believe it; he was rooted to his seat as he continued watching the report. Four of his friends' dead, gone in only minutes. Why did it have to be them, they had their whole life in front of them. Kaiba had just started to make friends with everyone, having gotten together with Jou who brought out the best in him. Mokuba was sweet kid, innocent, and full of life. Always trying to get his brother to take some time off, relax and have some fun.

Then there was Jounouchi, always rising up for his friends, always energetic, and always willing to take on any challenge. Kaiba had been his best challenge. For a lot of people, it had surprised them when he and Kaiba had gotten together, but for some, they knew that they just seemed right for one another. Shizuka was Jounouchi's only family, something that seemed fine to him. She was a beautiful girl; sweet to everyone, intelligent, and just like her brother, not afraid to speak her mind.

“These four people are going to be missed.” Yuugi sat stunned as tears rolled down his cheeks. He couldn’t even remember the phone ringing. His grandfather came in and told him there was a phone call for him. As he picked up the phone, a familiar voice came on.

“Yuugi, are you watching the news? It’s Jou, his sister and the Kaiba’s; they’re dead.” Yuugi, still in shock, listened to Honda’s voice and started to cry harder. “Yeah, I just heard. I can’t believe it; they're gone.” As Yuugi continued to shed quiet tears for his friends, Honda said he would be right over.

The rest of the evening seemed surreal as friends filtered in and out, and phone calls came. Yuugi fell into a restless sleep as everyone left to go home. The next morning, Yuugi knew that someone should start making funeral arrangements and go identify the bodies.

After doing so, funeral services were held a few days later and they were all buried side by side. Yuugi was very upset and made a nightly journey to the grave sites, and when he couldn’t be there, he asked another of his friends to place the roses on the graves.

Soon after the accident, everyone drifted apart. Honda and Otogi ran the Game Shop that Otogi owned. Anzu continued with her dancing career. Ryou and Marik went back home. Yuugi still ran his grandfather's shop. It had been five years since the accident, and Yuugi still visited the cemetery, telling them how much he missed them. However, he knew this would be his last visit. Due to his loneliness, he had made a decision to join them. No one would miss him, no one would care.

As he looked at the graves, a single tear rolled down his face. After the accident, everyone had been there for one another, but no one understood the depth of pain Yuugi felt. His world continued to fall apart. A year after the accident that had took his friends, his grandfather had passed away. His friends had drifted apart even more, going their separate ways and leaving him alone. The Game Shop, which held so many memories for him, had been just too much; he had sold it to try and erase them.

He pulled out his gun, looking at it and then at the graves, and whispered, “I can’t go on like this anymore, no one would miss me.” He pointed the weapon at his head and pulled the trigger, his body falling to the ground. Just before he died, Yuugi smiled as four people looked at him. One of them reached down and pulled him up, giving him a hug while the rest just smiled before turning and disappearing.

The next morning, the news reported that Yuugi Mouto had been found dead at the gravesite of his four friends that had died five years ago to the day. The anchormen finished the story by saying that he would be buried next to them.

The fates weave a tapestry called life and each one of us is interwoven into it. It joins and connects threads that, when one is cut, a life on earth is considered over and begins anew on another level of existence. This could be said of Seto, Jou, Mokuba, Shizuka, and Yuugi because, just like in life, they are reunited in death.
