Merger
Chapter 1
Mokuba ran a hand through Seto’s lighter hair, looking at where the long black strands mixed with the rich chestnut on the pillow. His brother could have been asleep, so still and peaceful was he, but he knew better.
“I talked to Ryuu,” he finally said. “When we went out last night.”
Seto opened his eyes to look at him. “What did he say?” He still didn’t move from his sideways position, only looking at Mokuba with his presently dark sapphires.
“He’ll be coming over tomorrow for dinner with both of us… I thought you might broach the real subject…” He looked earnestly at his lover and attempted the big, bright chibi eyes that had been getting him things with his brother since before he was old enough to know what ‘manipulate’ meant.
Seto smiled a little and shook his head. “You’re the one who decided maintaining two boyfriends separately was too much trouble… you’re the one who has to tell him what you actually want. He sounds receptive, though…?”
Mokuba had to smile a little. Sure, Seto hid it well… but he knew that he was, if not precisely eager, more than willing to let Otogi actually join them. Seto avoided interacting with other people and refused to even try to get an independent lover of his own, but even he needed someone or something else… and it would be good for him. They’d already gone over this argument when Mokuba first, tentatively, talked about bringing the other CEO in; Seto couldn’t just live like this, with only Mokuba for any real company, with the occasional servant or employee intruding upon his solitude. Seto had eventually given in, and was slowly warming up to the idea. Mokuba would almost think that he actually wanted it now.
“Well…” Seto raised his eyebrows at his hesitation, and he went on. “I mean, I haven’t exactly said ‘Hey, Ryuu, how’d you like to be part of an illegal relationship with me and my brother?’. Incest isn’t something you just bring up in casual conversation…”
“I didn’t imply that you should,” Seto said. “I know you’re not that stupid… but you’ve tried to slowly introduce him to the idea?”
Mokuba shrugged. “It’s hard. I don’t know how you really expect me to bring it up… it’s kind of something I’ll just have to spring on him.”
Seto sighed slightly.
“Don’t worry, Seto,” he said reassuringly, combing his fingers through his hair again. “Ryuu’s cool. Even if he doesn’t want to… he’s not going to go running to the police or the media or something.” Seto didn’t look as though he quite believed him, but he didn’t have much choice.
“Are you sure of that?” he asked ominously.
Mokuba smiled kindly at him and shifted forward to kiss him. Seto couldn’t fool him; he knew what he was really concerned, maybe even afraid, of. “Don’t worry,” he said quietly. “I’ll always choose you over him.”
Seto tried for a moment to look affronted, as though that had never been an issue; apparently, though, he realized that he would not be convincing Mokuba anytime soon, and gave up and smiled slightly. Mokuba smiled back and comfortably wrapped an arm around him.
A slim young man with hair as black as Mokuba’s and nearly as long, though nowhere near as full, was waiting for the younger Kaiba when he reentered his office at five o’clock. With a grin at his mild surprise, he stood and wrapped his arms around him.
“Hey, Moki,” he said, placing a light kiss on his lips. Mokuba grinned back and wrapped an arm around his waist.
“What are you doing here, you slacker? Don’t you have a company to run?”
Otogi Ryuuji grinned. “I’m playing hooky. I’m allowed to play hooky for my favorite boyfriend, right?”
“‘Favorite’? Meaning you have more than one?”
“Why would you think such a thing?” Otogi asked in mock offense. “How many do you have?”
“Oh, only the two.”
Otogi smiled, and Mokuba went around to his desk to get his cell phone and cars keys. “So, ready to meet my family?” he asked with a smile.
“I think I’ve adequately prepared.” Otogi held the door for him and wrapped an arm around him as he passed. His younger lover mirrored the image as they walked. “Is your brother here?”
Mokuba frowned slightly and pressed the button for the elevator. “No… he worked from home today… He usually does, now.” He didn’t quite look at Otogi as he said it.
“Hey.” He lightly touched Mokuba’s face, concern in his eyes. “What’s wrong?”
“It’s nothing…”
Otogi smiled a little. “You know you can’t pull the wool over my eyes, Moki. What is it?”
The younger sighed slightly as they were finally able to enter the elevator. “It’s just… I’m kind of worried about him, Ryuu. I haven’t said anything to him, but…”
The doors closed with a soft ‘whoosh’.
“What are you worried about?” Mokuba was slightly taller, but Otogi still managed a comforting gesture in running his hand through his thick hair. “I didn’t think Kaiba Seto needed anyone to be worried about him. He seems too strong for something as petty as human feelings.”
Mokuba frowned, this time specifically at him, and squared his shoulders a little, back in comforting territory familiar from his childhood and every day since. “Everyone thinks that,” he said vehemently. “And everyone is wrong. He acts so strong, but he isn’t cold or emotionless at all; he just tries to pretend. I want you to understand that. It doesn’t matter at all how he acts, Seto is just as fragile as anyone else – maybe more. He depends on me so much…”
Otogi rubbed his back and kissed him lightly to smooth his ruffled feathers. “I’m sorry,” he said. “I didn’t know. Was that what was bothering you? You were worried about your brother because no one understands him?”
Mokuba sighed again, leaning slightly into his safe embrace, but didn’t speak again until they were walking toward Mokuba’s car. “Did you drive?” he asked suddenly.
“Yeah, but I’ll just come back here afterward and pick up my car. Or, you know, you could bring me back here with you in the morning…” He grinned, but Mokuba only managed an almost-authentic smile.
They released each other to enter Mokuba’s Porsche, then Otogi took his hand once more, remaining silent but asking him to tell him, please.
They were about halfway back to the mansion when he finally did, though. “I’m worried about Seto,” he repeated. “Like I said, he normally works from home… He really doesn’t need to go in. Anything that comes up, I can handle it, and on the off chance I can’t, he’s still got his computer and his cell phone. He honestly doesn’t like people, you know… he avoids dealing with, talking to… even seeing anyone if at all possible.” He was just looking straight ahead at the road as he drove, never looking at Otogi, though his lover was watching him intently. “And, he’s always kind of been like that, but it’s gotten worse, since you guys all graduated. He worked from home today… he’s worked from home for the last two months, straight, and no one’s noticed, as far as I know. He literally has not been out of the house in at least a month. It isn’t healthy… and he doesn’t even care. He likes it better this way. But he depends on me so much… what if something happened to me? What would
he do? He seems to be barely able to talk to anyone else anymore…”
Otogi didn’t have much to say. He watched Mokuba silently, then glanced out the windshield. “I had no idea,” he said finally. “You’re really that worried about him?” Mokuba only nodded. “I wish there was something I could do…”
“Actually…” Mokuba said, and glanced toward him. “I was going to talk to you tonight, but this kind of ruined that mood…” He smiled a little, and Otogi returned it gently. “I was to ask you… this is mostly for my benefit, actually…” He seemed nervous, and Otogi squeezed his hand reassuringly. “I was going to ask if you’d maybe consider moving into the mansion…” He was staring straight ahead again, this time seemingly almost afraid to look.
“Moki…” he said with a smile.
“Course, if you don’t want to, it’s perfectly okay…” Mokuba went on with a quick glance at him. “I’ll understand…”
Otogi smiled and squeezed his hand again to interrupt him. “Of course I want to, you weirdo.”
Mokuba smiled broadly in relief. “You may want to have dinner with Seto before you agree…” he cautioned. “And then subtract about three levels of civility, if you want to know how he’ll normally act… It’s not always easy, living with him.”
“It’s okay,” Otogi assured him. “I’ll survive his company, I’m pretty sure.”
“I’ll have to have a stern talk with him if you don’t,” Mokuba said. “I don’t know if I can handle it if he kills a fifth one…”
The somewhat more petite raven-haired young man laughed, and looked out the window as they pulled up toward the mansion. “Looks a lot bigger up close…” he commented.
“It’s not that big,” he was informed matter-of-factly. “I don’t even get lost anymore.”
One of the garage doors opened as Mokuba pressed the button on his visor and he deftly guided the car into its proper spot. As they stepped out, Otogi glanced around before following his younger lover; he saw at least five different cars gleaming dully in the darkness and a motorcycle; there may have been more.
“Is that Seto’s?” he asked, indicating the latter.
Mokuba glanced back. “Yeah…” he said. “I think he doesn’t remember he has it… He doesn’t drive it anymore.”
That must go with what Mokuba was talking about before, how he was worried because Seto was becoming a recluse… he took his hand reassuringly, and Mokuba smiled at him as they entered the house proper.
