“Watch where you’re going, Kaiba!” Jou shouted.

Kaiba stood and dusted himself, leaving Jou on the ground. “Mutts usually know not to get between a person’s feet.”

Jou scrambled up and glared at the brunette. “Fuck off, Kaiba! You walked right into me!

“Right, whatever. I don’t have time for this.” With that, he tuned on his heel and strode off.

“Dammit, Kaiba!” Jou shouted.

“Jou, calm down!” Yugi wrapped his arms around his friend’s waist to hold him back. “We’re on school property! If you’re not careful, you’ll get in trouble.”

Jou calmed slightly. “I know, Yug. But sometimes that guy just makes me so mad!”

“I know, I know. It’s okay. Hey, Honda, Anzu and I are going to the shop to duel! Do you want a ride?” Yugi asked, trying desperately to calm the blonde down.

“No thanks, Yug. I’m going to walk this off. Meet you there.” With a wave to his friend, the blonde turned and headed down the street.

Jou walked four blocks before veering off into the street. The route through the alley on the other side was the fastest way to get to the Kame Game Shop. His blonde head was bowed in thought and he didn’t bother to look around.

There was a squeal of breaks and a horn’s blast before Jou’s head snapped up and he caught a glimpse of a large black sedan before pain exploded in his head and everything went white.

The phone rang. Seto rolled over in bed and blearily opened one eye, reading the name on the caller ID screen. Who the hell was calling at two in the morning? West Domino Medical Center.

He bolted up into a sitting position. Oh, God, Mokuba! He was spending the night at his friend’s house. The brunette’s hand whipped out and he grabbed the phone. He brought the shaking receiver up to his ear.

“Hello?” He asked, struggling to even his voice.

“Is this a Mister Seto Kaiba?” A calm woman’s voice asked.

“Yes. Yes, this is Kaiba.”

“We regret to inform you that Jonouchi Katsuya was in a car accident Yesterday afternoon.”

“What? Jou? A car accident?” Seto’s mind blanked. “Why are you telling me this?”

“Mr. Jonouchi has listed you as next of kin, Mr. Kaiba.”

“What? I’m not related to Jou.”

“He has you listed as his closest relative. According to the card in his wallet, you are his second cousin.”

“Jou? My Second Cousin? No way in hell.”

“Well, Mr. Kaiba, since his father died, you’re all there is.”

“Wait. Wait just one second. Are you saying that Jou is…is…dead?”

“No, Mr. Kaiba. He is injured though. Jonouchi is in a critical and unstable condition. We need to know if he should be put on life support.”

Seto cursed under his breath. “Will he live through the night without it?”

“Very unlikely.”

“Then put him on the damn machine!”

“Yes sir, Mr. Kaiba. Will you be here?”

“Yes. Ten minutes.” He was about to hang up when he remembered something. “Wait. Call Yugi Motou and Anzu Mazaki. Tell them to call the others.”

“Okay, Mr. Kaiba.”

He hung up and stood. After pulling on a pair of jeans, he phoned the nighttime staff to bring his limo to the front. Then he grabbed a black T-shirt Mokuba had given him and pulled it over his head. He ran out of the room, slamming the door behind him. He pulled on his casual tennis shoes as he ran, hopping on one foot down the hall. At the door, the brunette grabbed an umbrella to block out the pouring rain.

He ran out onto the pavement and climbed into the backseat of the limousine, slammed the door behind him. “West Domino Medical Center,” he snapped at the driver. “Step on it. Break the speed limit, for all I care. Get me there in five minutes.”

“Yes, sir, Mr. Kaiba, Sir.” The chauffer was shocked, but followed the directions.

The car streaked away from the mansion and down the street. A police officer caught their tale and the annoying flickering blue and red lights came on.

When the chauffer started to slow, Seto grit his teeth. “Keep going!” He said. “Deal with the cop at the hospital.”

“Yes, sir,” A bit taken aback, the driver pushed on the gas pedal again.

As they approached the hospital, the police officer’s sirens grew louder and he sped up. Seto had already received two official warnings, but it didn’t matter. Not one bit.

They pulled into the parking lot and Seto all but sprinted toward the doors. He got in and looked for a nurse. Spotting one, he stepped over.

“Katsuya Jonouchi.” He said, attempting to calm his voice.

“Room 666.” She said in an oddly cheerful voice. How ironic.

Seto walked quickly down the hall and nearly walked into the doctor, who was exiting room 666. He pressed a finger to his lips and gestured for Seto enter the room.

Taking a deep breath, the Brunette stepped over the threshold.

“Oh my God,” Seto said. Jou was in a reclining position, wearing a standard-issue blue hospital gown. He was asleep, and one of the closed eyes was badly swollen, purple, and had a cut right under the eyebrow that was stitched up. The eyebrow had been shaved. Across his cheek was a line of stitches, and his chin was black and blue. There were smatterings of stitches and painful-looking bruises across the visible arms and legs. His head had been shaved, and the small black stitching spread from the back of his head to his forehead, giving the appearance that he had a spider web that had been ripped on his head.

“Oh my God,” Seto repeated, and then stepped out. The sight of the young blonde was horrible, and Seto knew he would never again look like he had. “What happened?” He snapped at the doctor.

“Well, we’re a little fuzzy on details. Apparently, Jonouchi was walking along the sidewalk, when he suddenly turned off into the street. His head was bowed and he didn’t watch where he was going. The driver tried to avoid, but he couldn’t. The rest is history.” He shrugged. “he got out of surgery about a half hour ago.”

“Oh,” Seto said quietly. “Okay.”

“Now I’m going to assume that you are Mr. Seto Kaiba.

“Yes, that’s right.”

Well, we were looking through Jonouchi’s wallet, and we found a folded paper. It had the word ‘Seto’ on it. Then we flipped it over and read that this paper wasn’t to be given to you unless he’s been in a serious accident, his life is threatened, or he is dead.”

“Okay…May I have this paper?”

“Yes.” He led Seto down the hall. “It’s folded in half and taped. There is something inside.”

“Alright.”

They arrived at the Help Desk and the doctor picked up a paper with the brunette’s name on it. “Here. Now get out of here. You look like you’re about to cry.”

Seto blinked and realized that he had been wearing his emotions on his sleeve. Odd, very odd. The brunette nodded solemnly and slowly walked to the exit, clutching the paper in one fist. He opened the hospital doors to find his chauffer in an apparent argument with the police officer.

After fiercely informing the police officer exactly where he stood in the grand scheme of things, Seto climbed into the back of the Limo and ordered his chauffer to go for a twenty minute walk and then come back.

After the man was gone, the brunette peeled back the tape and let a small silver key fall into his palm. Then, turning over the paper, he found an address, name of bank and number-which Seto assumed was for a safebox.

He waited for twenty minutes until the chauffer returned and climbed into the front seat.

“I need to make a stop before we go home.” He listed the address from the piece of paper, and the man in front pulled away from the curb.

When they arrived at the tiny bank, Seto was relieved to find that it was a 24/7 bank. He leapt out of the car and paced quickly into the building.

The woman manning the desk looked pitifully tired. She took Seto back to the case in question and left the room. Seto turned the key in the lock and pulled out the box. Inside was a leather-bound book that looked tattered and faded. It had Seto’s name scribbled across the front.

Seto pulled it out and slid the case back into its slot. Sitting down at one of the scarred old wooden desks, he flipped it to the first page.

Hey Seto,

Well, if you’re reading this, I must be dead or close to it. Oh well, I’d hoped to tell you about this myself, but I guess I want you to know exactly what’s going on and why it happened. Before you get freaked out, no you’re not my second cousin. You’re my brother.
