Goodbye’s Song

They stood in front of the two caskets; both made out of brown oak and both containing the body of a friend. To the surprise of many it was sunny, and there was even a rainbow in the sky. Yugi thought of it as a mockery, how could the day seem so beautiful and happy when two of his best friends lay in their graves never to awaken again? They’d never go to school, play duel monsters, or be the encouraging presence that they had been. Yugi felt the tears come to his eyes, why did this happen? His knees gave way and he fell to the ground. He completely ignored everything around him as he remembered them when they were still alive, and happy.

I never thought I'd die alone
I laughed the loudest who'd have known?
I traced the cord back to the wall
No wonder it was never plugged in at all

“Yug!!! Come ‘ere!! Look at this!” Jounouchi said pointing to something nearby that Yugi could not see from where he was standing. “Hurry!”

Yugi ran up to Jou and peaked over the hedge. He giggled at what, more specifically who he saw sitting there. Malik Ishtar and Ryou Bakura were there sitting under a tree. Ryou as per normal was reading a book; he had one hand holding the book and the other hand was running through Malik’s bleach blonde hair. Malik looked incredibly comfortable lying with his head in Ryou’s lap and Ryou’s hand running through his hair.

He and Jou ducked behind the bush they were hiding behind. Jou was laughing so hard he could hardly keep quiet. Yugi himself was giggling like crazy.

“I… hehe… I can… heh … can’t believe it!!! Who woulda thought those two? Hehehehe this is priceless.” Jou peeked over the bush again, and then plopped down beside Yugi laughing.

Yugi starred at Jou still giggling. “You have to admit though they are cute together.” He said turning around and peeking through a little hole in the bush. “Oh my God!!” he squeaked looking at the scene before him. “Jou, look!” Jounouchi also peeked through a hole in the bush and gasped surprised.

Malik had abandoned his spot in Ryou’s lap and now had Ryou pressed against the tree they were under in a steamy kiss, Ryou’s book lay forgotten beside the two as Ryou threaded his fingers through Malik’s hair, Malik’s own hands were holding Ryou’s face.

As Jou and Yugi watched the two separated from their kiss and looked each other in the eyes. Then Ryou’s face lit up in a rosy blush. “Ma-Malik? What was that for?” he said softly to the other boy. Jou and Yugi had to lean forward just so they could hear some of what Ryou was saying.

Malik grinned at the pale hikari. “Ryou how long have we been… you know together?” He asked sitting down beside Ryou and leaning his head against Ryou’s shoulder.

Ryou smiled to himself. “It’s been three months. Why do you ask?” He looked down at Malik and leaned his head against the older teens.

Malik looked down at his hands. “Ryou. I… I need to tell you something.” Malik sat up and turned to look at the silver haired teen. “Ryou I haven’t been completely honest with you. Last month Mariku, Bakura and I got drunk and we all had sex together.” He looked down at his hands ashamed.

Ryou’s smile faltered. He sat there stunned for a minute, and then he took Malik’s hands in his. “Malik it’s okay. You were drunk and although that’s not an excuse, you were also honest and you told me what happened. I won’t pretend that everything’s okay but I forgive you for what happened. I don’t want this to split us apart.”

Malik shook his head and took his hand out of Ryou’s. “Ryou you don’t understand I enjoyed it, I liked it so much we did it again three days later.” Malik looked away from Ryou and at the tree. “Ryou I’ve been cheating on you with Mariku and Bakura for over a month.”

Ryou’s hands went to cover his mouth, a sign that he was worried or shocked. “M-Malik-kun, why are you telling me this?”

Malik glanced at Ryou from the corner of his eye. “Bakura told me that he wouldn’t go with me behind your back. He told me I would have to choose him and Mariku or you. I’ve come to tell you that it’s over between us.” Malik got up and began to leave. As he was walking past Ryou he whispered one last thing. “I’m sorry.”

I never conquered, rarely came
16 just held such better days
Days when I still felt alive
We couldn't wait to get outside

Jou and Yugi watched as Ryou began to sob uncontrollably. When they were sure Malik was out of sight they ran to the white haired hikari. Ryou didn’t even notice their presence he just sobbed into his hands, his body shaking with the force of those sobs.

Yugi knelt down beside his fellow hikari and pulled Ryou into a hug, Ryou buried his face in Yugi’s chest and continued to sob. “Oh Ryou.” Yugi said stroking the sobbing boy’s white hair in an attempt to calm him down.

Jou growled in the direction Malik had walked. “That no good little son of a bitch!” He said preparing to follow Malik and give him a piece of his mind.

“J-Jounouchi-kun onegai d-don’t.” Ryou said softly from where he was laying in Yugi’s arms.

Jounouchi glared one final time in Malik’s direction then walked back to where Ryou and Yugi were and knelt next to them; he placed his hand on Ryou’s arm in a comforting manor. “Ry you gonna be ok?”

Ryou shook his had then sat up out of Yugi’s arms. “I… I’ll be fine I just have to go home and get some rest.” He smiled at them in the comforting manor he always tried to put up when he was hurt. “Well I’ll be going now see you both later.” With that Ryou wiped the tears from his face, picked up his book and book bag and began to walk home.

Yugi looked after him troubled. “Do you think he’ll be ok?” He asked looking up at Jounouchi.

The blonde shook his head shook his head not sure. “How bout we go an’ check up on him after supper t’night? I’ll meet ya at seven outside the game shop since it’s closer ta Ryou’s.” Yugi nodded his agreement; Jounouchi looked down at his watch checking the time. “Well it’s four Yug I gotta go. See ya at seven.” With that the blonde teen ran towards his own house.

Yugi sighed then shook his head. With a last look back at the direction of Ryou’s house, he turned and went home for supper.

The world was wide, too late to try
The tour was over, we'd survived
I couldn't wait till I got home
To pass the time in my room alone

Yugi and Jounouchi met up as promised and headed over to Ryou’s house hoping to held cheer their friend up. Yugi had even brought his Monty Python and the Quest for the Holy Grail DVD that Ryou was so found of; Yugi himself still didn’t understand any of the movie or why is white-haired friend liked it so much. When they reached Ryou’s house they heard yelling from inside; out of curiosity they walked up and peeked into the window.

Ryou was standing there in an overly large white T-shirt and was glaring at Malik, Mariku and Bakura who were all laying on the couch dishevelled and partially naked. Currently Ryou had his hands clenched into fists and was shaking angrily as tears coursed down his flushed cheeks.

“Malik, I can accept that you don’t want me, and that you have chosen Bakura and Mariku over me… I mean it hurts but I want you to be happy. But this?” He looked up his eyes misty and showing his broken heart. “In my house? The same day that you told me it was over? Why?”

Malik moved towards Ryou in a comforting manner. “Ryou, I…” He reached out and gently touched Ryou’s arm.

“DON’T TOUCH ME!!” Ryou jerked back out of Malik’s grip and backed up against the wall his shaking increasing. “Don’t come near me. Stay away. I won’t let you hurt me again… never.” He shook his head silky white hair flying about. “Never, never again.”

Bakura got up off the couch and walked over to Ryou and gently pulled him into an embrace. “Hikari it’s alright. I’m sorry we were being inconsiderate. Please calm, we’ll talk all this over.” He said leading Ryou over to the couch where Mariku sat.

At the site of Mariku’s mostly naked body Ryou went crazy. He ripped himself from Bakura’s grip, turned and in seconds Bakura was on the floor holding his cheek. “I hate you.” The words were whispered in a terrifyingly soft voice dripping with venom. Ryou then turned and ran up stairs, probably to his room, sobbing harshly.

I never thought, I'd die alone
Another six months I'll be unknown
Give all my things to all my friends
You'll never set foot in my room again

“We better get goin’ Yug… I don’t think we can do much for ‘im right now. Common I’ll walk ya home.” Jono said turning away from the house where they could still here Bakura yelling at Ryou to talk to them. Jono shook his head sadly and began to walk away, ignoring Yugi’s last desperate look at the house before following him. “I’m gonna have ta leave ya early Yug. I got some stuff ta take care of.”

Looking up at Jono Yugi thought he saw something flicker across his friends face but passed off as a trick of the light. “Alright Jono I’ll see you at school tomorrow.” Smiling brightly Yugi ran up to his front door and waved bye to Jono before slipping in. He missed Jono’s last words as he closed the door.

“I won’t be in school ever again Yug. I’ll miss ya.”

Hours later Yugi woke up to Yami shaking him urgently. “Aibou… Shizuka’s on the phone,” Yami looked away from his hikari, eyes dark with an unreadable emotion, “It’s about Jounouchi.”

Not understanding what was going on Yugi rubbed his eyes and answered the phone; Shizuka’s broken voice greeted him. “Shizuka?”

He could hear her sobbing through the line and fear suddenly tightened its fists around his heart. “Yugi… he would have wanted you to know first; you were his best friend.” Another sob escaped the young girl as she drew in a shaky breath. “Yugi Katsuya… he… he’s dead…” This sentence caused the girl to erupt in a fit of heartbroken sobs.

Stunned Yugi stood there as the phone fell from his limp hands. His mind reeled in shock at what he had just been told. Dimly he was aware of Yami thanking Shizuka and consoling her before hanging up the phone.

Yami gently took Yugi into his arms as the teen broke down; his body shook with the force of his sobs. Yami gently rubbed his hikari’s back in soothing patterns trying to calm his little hikari. “Yugi I know how it hurts. Come let us go to bed we shall talk of it in the morning.” At Yugi’s small nodded he picked the young one up and carried him to his room, where he stayed with him through the night.

You'll close it off, board it up
Remember the time that I spilled the cup
Of apple juice in the hall
Please tell mom this is not her fault

When Yugi awoke the next morning the pain was almost gone, until he thought about Jono, then his heart’s pain came screaming back at him. Yugi fell to his knees sobbing, he couldn’t believe it, Jono wasn’t gone! This was all a bad dream and Mou hitori no boku would wake him up any moment now.

Yugi felt arms wrap around him from behind and the comforting voice of his yami whispering comforting words in his ear. “Aibou, we need to get you to bed, this is affecting you very badly. Do not worry I am here to help you through it, that is why I am here as your yami to help you whenever you need me.”

Yugi turned around in Yami’s arms burying his face in the darks shoulders. “Y-Yami why? Why did Jounouchi die? How?” He looked up amethyst eyes red rimmed and tear-filled. “Was it his father? Did he get involved in a fight with a gang, a car accident? Or did he… did Jono k-kill himself?”

Yugi’s eyes widened further as he took in the grim face of his other, he closed his eyes despairingly as more sobs shook his small frame. Yami simply held him comfortingly. “It is alright aibou, I promise the pain will go away with time. Everything fades with time.”

“D-do you think Shizuka told the others? I know she would call Anzu, Otogi, and Honda. But what about Kaiba and Bakura?” He turned towards the phone. “D-do you think I should call them?”

Shaking his head Yami lifted his emotionally exhausted hikari into his arms. “Later aibou. Now is the time for you to reset and deal with the pain you are feeling.” The blankets of Yugi’s bed were drawn back and Yugi was placed in it. “Sleep aibou, I will call Shizuka and ask if she or her mother need any help informing people about this tragedy.”

“But…” Yugi’s attempted protest was cut short.

“No buts aibou, sleep. You need your rest. I will be downstairs if you need me, just call and I will be here.” Yami said turning off the light and closing the door to Yugi’s room.

Sleep refused to come to Yugi as he lay watching the ceiling. Eventually he felt his sore eyes drift shut and sleep over came him once again; granting him reprieve from the pain brought on by Jounouchi’s death.

I never conquered, rarely came
16 just held such better days
Days when I still felt alive
We couldn't wait to get outside

The next time he awoke Yami told him that everyone had been informed except Ryou who was not answering his phone; even Malik had been informed, and through him Mariku and Bakura, who was staying with the Ishtar’s after Ryou had kicked him out of their house.

“I was thinking about going over to Ryou’s and checking up on him as well as inform him of what has happened.” Yami said to Yugi over the breakfast table, the later of who was absentmindedly picking apart his eggs.

Yugi glanced up at him when his yami mentioned Ryou’s name, he remembered what had happened the night of Jono’s death. “I want to go with you.” He said mater-of-factly.

Crimson eyes stared at him searching for anything that could be used to force Yugi to stay at home. “Aibou you are not well, you should not come along it will probably only upset you more.”

Yugi stood up and began clearing his plate, then washing it. “You’re not just going over to tell him about Jono’s d-death.” They both winced as he chocked on the word death. “You’re worried, after what happened last night, I am too. Please Yami, I want to make sure Ryou’s all right. I need to do this, I couldn’t help Jono but maybe I can help Ryou feel better.”

“Alright aibou. You can come with me, but if you get too upset I am either taking you right home or taking control of our body and letting you rest within the Puzzle.”

He didn’t really like them, but they were fair terms and Yugi grudgingly agreed to follow them. “Fine, but if something’s wrong with Ryou you’re going to let me help no matter what.”

A small smile appeared on the dark’s face at this, perhaps his light would heal with enough time and love from his friends and family. Even now traces of his precious hikari were showing when his friends needed him. “Very well aibou. But if we are ever going to get there should we not be leaving?”

Yugi smiled and nodded before running upstairs to get changed then running back down fully dressed. “I’m ready so let’s go.”

Nodding Yami held the door open for him and they began their walk towards Ryou’s house.

The world was wide, too late to try
The tour was over, we'd survived
I couldn't wait till I got home
To pass the time in my room alone

The second they spotted Ryou’s house they knew something was wrong; Malik was sitting outside his face buried in Mariku’s chest sobbing. All around the house were cops and an ambulance; Bakura was talking to one of the cops not far off to the side. Yami and Yugi shared a worried glance then walked over to where Mariku and Malik sat.

Yami placed a hand on Mariku’s arm to get his attention. The other yami looked up at him eyes slightly teary. When he saw Yami his eyes widened marginally and he shook Malik lightly. “Hikari, the Pharaoh is here.”

The said hikari looked up eyes red, tear stains on his cheeks. “P-Pharaoh… what are you doing here?” It was obvious to the Pharaoh and his hikari that the former keeper of the Sennen Rod was trying to hide any evidence of his inner emotions.

Frowning the Pharaoh looked over to where Bakura was. “We came to tell Ryou about Jounouchi’s death. What is going on here?”

The darkest yami frowned deeply, his tanned features troubled. “So you don’t know…”

“What do you mean?” Yugi asked his voice full of fear and pain. “Why are you all here anyway? Where’s Ryou?” When both of the Egyptian’s looked over at a nearby ambulance Yugi followed their gaze, there was a stretcher with a covered body on it. “No…” Yugi whispered shaking his head in denial.

“Aibou…” Yami whispered sadly and tried to draw the small hikari into his arms, only to have Yugi pull away. “Yugi-“

The said hikari shook his head running over the stretcher and throwing the sheet back. White hair spread over the stretcher framing an ashen face and covering closed eyes, his lips were blue. “R-Ryou...?” Yugi whispered in shook trying to wake his friend up. He didn’t even notice when Yami, Mariku and Malik came up behind him.

Yami pulled his shaken hikari into his arms once again. “How did this happen?”

Just as Mariku was about to reply Bakura walked up, shoulders shaking slightly. “Kura, are you alright?” Ventured the tanned yami.

Bakura shook his head. “I should have been here!” He cried angrily. “I should have fucking been here! If I had he wouldn’t be-” Shuddering the white-haired yami bit his lip trying to hold his emotions in.

Malik embrace Bakura burying his face in the yami’s chest. “It’s not you’re fault, nobody could have known something like this would happen.” When Bakura was about to protest Malik placed a finger on his lips. “Don’t Bakura, we all know you couldn’t have done anything to stop this.”

Nodding at what his hikari was saying Mariku embraced Bakura from behind. “It’ll be alright Bakura, h-he’s in a better place now; Ra will watch over his soul.” Malik began to sob at Marik’s words embracing Bakura tightly. The three of them clung to each other in desperation crying to find some sort of comfort in each other’s arms.

Yami bit his lip not wanting to disturb them but knowing he needed to know what had happened. “Bakura-” The ancient pharaoh whispered softly trying to gain the former tomb robbers attention. His eyes widened marginally as he saw his former foe’s tear streaked face. “What happened?”

I never conquered, rarely came
Tomorrow holds such better days
Days when I can still feel alive
When I can wait to get outside

Bakura took in a deep breath trying to calm himself. “Early this morning I was awoken by an extreme amount of fear and stress coming from Ryou. He was calling for help.”

~~~(Flashback)~~~
{{/Blah/ Ryou to Bakura - //Blah// Bakura to Ryou}}
/Bakura-sama help!/ Bakura jerked up in bed looking around startled. //Hikari?// Beside him Malik moaned and turned over in his sleep snuggling up to his side, Bakura ignored this. //Hikari what’s wrong?//
Ryou’s voice rang through his mind again panicked and full of terror. /Bakura-sama! He’s going to kill me!/
Jumping out of bed Bakura quickly threw his close on. /Hold on Ryou I’m coming!/
All his moving around woke Malik and Mariku who both peered up at him blearily. “Kura? What’s wrong?” Mariku asked stretching.
“Ryou’s in trouble, I have to get to him!” Bakura said urgently running out of the house and grabbing the keys to one of the two motorcycles, quickly hopping on and driving towards his hikari’s house, Marik and Malik were not too far behind him.
Just as Bakura was running up there was a gunshot and a scream. Bakura fell to the ground holding his chest. “R-Ryou…”
Mariku looked towards the house. “Malik you stay here with Kura, I’ll go check on Ryou.” After Malik nodded in agreement Mariku ran into the house, the Sennen Rod held before him defensively. “Ryou?” He ventured quietly listening for sounds of the Ring’s hikari. His own answer was a feeble moan. Worried he followed and gasped at what he saw upon entering Ryou’s room.
Ryou was laying on the floor holding his stomach; a pool of his own blood lay surrounding him staining his white hair and the carpet he lay on, red. “M-Mari…ku.” Ryou whispered weakly.
“Shit!” Mariku cried running to the downed hikari. “What happened?” He grabbed a nearby blanket and pressing it to the wound. “Don’t answer that, can you call Bakura? We need to get an ambulance for you.” The tanned yami realized he was rambling but couldn’t help it; he was at a loss at what to do.
/B-Bak...ura./ Called Ryou weakly at Mariku’s prompting. He felt his yami’s awareness and minutes later heard him run up the stairs… or was that the sound of his own heartbeat? Everything was so hazy and dark. He swore he could hear someone calling his name.
“Ryou! Ryou answer me!” Bakura called desperately shaking his hikari. There was no response from the white haired angel; he just lay there like a rag doll. “Oh Ra no… hikari.” Gently he pulled Ryou into his arms and sat there rocking him, sobbing.
Near him Mariku held his own hikari as the tanned light sobbed. Sirens could be heard in the background as the cops and ambulance arrived.
~~~(End Flashback)~~~

The world is wide, the time goes by
The tour is over, I survive
I can wait till I get home
To pass the time in my room alone

Yugi shook his head disbelieving. “It’s not fair! First Jono and now Ryou. Why is this happening?!” Weakly he pounded his fists on Yami’s chest. “It’s not fair…”

The former pharaoh simply held him allowing his distraught hikari to let his emotions out. When Yugi finally exhausted himself Yami picked him up and cradled him in his arms. “Oh aibou…” The dark held his hikari to his chest trying to protect him from the world; even though he knew it was futile, his hikari had already witnessed one of the harshest faces of reality- death.

A/N: Well that’s it – it took me two years to write this! It just didn’t want to be written. I’m glad it’s done and I’m happy with how it turned out. Although it does seem to be a little fast… Well I hope you all enjoyed it to. Please review.

If you've read this before that's cause it was on my bro's account; he gave me full permission to post here here sice he's living aff.
