Chapter 1: Winning and Losing
It was over. Yugi had defeated Yami in the final battle--the one that decided Yami's fate. Yugi's victory had freed the spirit from the Millenium Puzzle and he would be allowed to pass into the afterlife.
Sorrow and heartbreak flooded the diminutive teen's soul. In agony, he collapsed to his knees as tears streamed down his face. The knowledge of what his victory had cost him filled his mind, his heart, his soul. He had lost his Yami--the other half of his soul. Yami, or Atemu, which was his true name, was now free. He had fulfilled his destiny and would now join his friends who had been waiting for his spirit for 3000 years.
Yugi didn't see or hear Yami approach him. It wasn't until he felt the warmth of the lean fingers gripping his arms that he looked up.
The former Pharaoh pulled the distraught youth to his feet. He flinched at the depth of pain shining in the large violet innocent eyes. He pushed his own pain away in order to help his precious aibou. "Don't cry, Hikari." His fingers gently wiped away the wetness from the pale cheeks.
Yugi blinked rapidly in an effort to rid himself of the unfallen tears. Fresh pain ripped through his heart as he looked into mou hitori no boku's exotic crimson eyes. Eyes that mirrored the pain shining in his own.
There were so many things that Yugi wanted to say but now there was no time. The doorway to the afterlife would open soon and Pharaoh Atemu could finally be at peace after 3000 years of imprisonment inside the Millenium Puzzle.
The tiny teen forced himself to not beg or plead for mou hitori no boku to stay with him. That would be too selfish. No way would he do that to his soul partner. He could not ask him to refuse the eternal peace that had been denied him for so many years. He bit back the words and smiled.
The crimson eyes closed briefly at the sight of the obvoiusly fake smile. He could feel the pain radiating from his innocent aibou and wished desperately that there was something he could do or say that would ease his suffering. He couldn't reveal his emotions now. It was too late to tell his hikari that he loved him. To do so would be cruel. He pushed his desire away and embraced the smaller teen, holding him close one last time.
Before either of the boys could speak, the doorway slowly opened. Atemu turned his head and saw his advisors, his friends, waiting for him. He looked back at his aibou who was silently studying the spirits waiting on the Pharaoh.
Yugi pulled away from mou hitori no boku. Their eyes locked onto each other, attempting to discern the secrets hidden in each other's heart. Finally, he broke the oppressing silence. "Goodbye, mou hitori no boku," he managed to whisper.
Atemu nodded once. There was nothing to be said now. Words were inadequate--they couldn't begin to express the emotions he was feeling. Silently, he walked to the opening, his clothing melting away to be replaced by his Pharaoh's garments and jewelry.
The spirits of his friends surrounded him, shielding him from Yugi was watched silently as the gateway closed and sealed itself; the ground opening up and swallowing the seven millenium items.
Two heart-rending screams echoed through the underground cavern startling the group of friends gathered there. A collective gasp of alarm was uttered as two of the teens crumpled to the ground.
"Yugi!"
"Ryou!"
