Chapter 1

Here it is. My first yugioh fic, and my first published attempt at a lemon. Don't know why I choose this anime. *shrugs.* Oh well. I blame it on my muses.

Trouble: Hey!

Demi: I didn't do it. *Runs and hides from Trouble.*

Hime: Kittens. *Promptly gets in a fight with Trouble.*

*sigh.* Just my luck to get stuck with three feline muses.

Hime: *Done beating up on Trouble* The Lady D'Ceandre does not own any of the characters of Yugioh. This plot is a product of her insanity.

Trouble: *trying to recover her dignity* Anyone who sues will recieve a second hand P3 computer, an old bike and her entire collection of Lois and Clark episodes. ^__^;

Enjoy, or not. Review if you want to. Flames will be used to roast marshmallows. ^__^

Demi: I like marshmallows.

Everyone has a light side and dark side. In some, the light side is dominant, and the combination creates a happy person, bubbly and joyful, depending on the exact mix. In others, the dark side reigns, and they are dark, moody, and in extreme cases, cruel and sadistic. In a very few, the two sides are perfectly balanced. But all balances eventually have to shift…

Yugi ran down the street, cursing himself for having to check out that last gaming shop. Now he was going to be late getting home.

:You can just say you were checking out the competition.: Yami suggested, as the spirit detached and ran alongside.

:Sure, Grandpa’d believe that.: Yugi said sarcastically. Yami shrugged. How he managed to do that, and ran at the same time was something Yugi would never figure out.

Somebody stepped out in front of them, and Yugi yelped as he skidded to a stop, gasping for breath. He figure turned to look at him.

“Bakura? What are… you doing out… so late?"

:That’s not Ryou.: Yami warned. Yugi took a second look, and stepped back.

“You were….”

“Destroyed? When will you hikari ever learn? I cannot be destroyed.” He grinned evilly, producing a long knife. “Now, be a good boy and step aside while I ‘talk’ with the pharaoh.” Yugi glared. Yami shifted behind him, ready to take control, but Yugi ignored him.

“No. We have somewhere to be, and no time to deal with the likes of you.” He snapped.

“Oh, the bunny has fangs.” Bakura slashed, and a thin strip of red, appeared on Yugi’s left cheek. He stepped back, surprised, and wiped the blood off on his sleeve.

“I want to see him now, Bunny, or else.”

Yami surged forward, trying again for control of the body. Yugi struggled angrily. Yami growled, annoyed.

:Yugi!: He snapped. Yugi hesitated, only a second, but it was all the ancient spirit needed. Yugi was shoved aside, not roughly, but the shock of being forced away was bad enough. Hurt, Yugi retreated, back to the farthest corner of the millennium puzzle. Yami paused a moment to growl at himself. He forgot that the teen wasn’t accustomed to giving the unwavering obedience Yami had grown used to in his past life. He quickly decided his hikari would be fine where he was for the moment. He could search him out later.

“All right. What do you want now, Thief.” Bakura smirked.

“I want what I have always wanted. Your puzzle. And this time I will have it.” Yami gave a short laugh.

“Really now? How many times have I heard that before?” He put his hand in his pocket, feeling his deck there. “Unfortunately, you seem to have caught up with me at a bad time. I left my duel disk at home.” He smiled arrogantly as he impulsively decided to take a page out of Kaiba’s book. “Why don’t you make an appointment.”

He walked past the evil yami and paused.

“And Bakura, if you ever threaten my hikari again, I will personally slice you up into pieces so small they would not feed butterflies.” Then he whirled and walked confidently away. Bakura made no move to stop him.

“Laugh now Pharaoh. Soon, I will take it all from you. Your little group, your hikari, and your puzzle. Then we’ll see who’s laughing.” Bakura paused a he felt a faint shifting, the merest signs of rebellion.

:Ryou, you wouldn’t be planning on trying anything foolish, now would you?: His only answer was a flash of fear, and the shifting subsided.

:There’s a good boy.: Turning he walked off into the fading darkness.

Yami wandered through the tunnels of the puzzle. Yugi still hadn’t shown himself, and Yami was beginning to become concerned. Luckily Yugi’s grandfather hadn’t noticed the difference. He had just gotten a new shipment in, and Yami had gone to bed early. Now their body lay in bed, apparently sleeping. Yugi had used the puzzle’s power to heal the cut. He wouldn’t normally, but the slice would bring too many questions, and if it left a scar… He wanted his hikari kept just the way he was. Perfect.

:Aibou?: Yami called. He caught a faint hint of anger, before Yugi quickly stifled it, refusing to respond. Yami sighed.

“Aibou!” He called, seeing a flash of blonde. It disappeared around a corner.

:So you want to play?: He asked, a mischievous smile forming. He never could resist a challenge. :You know you can’t hide from me in here, Little One.: Stubborn denial flared a moment down the link. Yami chuckled. :As you wish.:

He started up one of the flights of stairs, following it to a door, which he opened and stepped through. He was on the other side of the soul room now, upside down to where he had been before. It had taken him ages to get used to the shifting planes here. Yugi had picked it up easily. But still, with over four thousand years to practice, Yami knew the puzzle as well as he knew his deck.

A few shifts and realignments brought him to a third door. This one led to a ledge. At the far end, Yugi stood in front of yet another door, looking out at the maze, searching for the Pharaoh.

He should know better, really. Yami moved silently to stand behind Yugi, and reached out to tap him on the shoulder.

“You lose.”

The anger changed to a sudden fear as Yugi whirled. Yami stared at him a moment, surprised, then pulled the smaller boy into his embrace. Yugi didn’t struggle. Yami sensed his aibou’s mind remembering the earlier scene.

“I’m sorry, Aibou. I didn’t mean to… He just… He made me so angry. Threatening you like that. No one threatens my Hikari.” His arms tightened possessively, then loosened slightly when Yugi squirmed uncomfortably.

“Don’t…” Yugi paused to lick dry lips. “Don’t do it again. Ask, Yami. Otherwise, you’re no better…” He trailed off, but Yami finished.

“No better then Bakura. I know. But sometimes…” He chuckled. “Oh, you are such an innocent.” That comment puzzled Yugi, but he didn’t answer, instead just relaxing in his dark half’s embrace, thinking. It had been about a month since they had been reunited, and Yami had become extremely overprotective, even lashing out at Jounouchi a few times, when he had started teasing Yugi about something.

After a moment, Yami released him, pulling him from the millennium puzzle back into his body. The Egyptian appeared beside the bed in his spirit form.

:You should rest now, Little One. I have a feeling you will need it.: Yugi was exhausted, and gave no arguments. For a moment, Yami looked down on his sleeping hikari. He tried a moment to decipher his feelings, protectiveness, love, surprisingly a small hint of jealousy and anger that Yugi had his own life while he was but a shadow, banished at Yugi’s will. Perhaps that was what drove the other yami to overpower their hikari, a worry that they might be forced aside, and left alone in the darkness again.

He hated the dark, it reminded him of the long centuries spent in the puzzle. And the cold. It was almost always cold here, far cooler then Egypt had ever been. But he would grow used to the cold, eventually, and Yugi’s light was a beacon to keep away the shadows. That was the more important one. Without his lighter half, he was in danger of falling to the same darkness that had consumed the others.

Yami merged back into his hikari, and gave himself up to his dreams as well.
