Author’s Note – This is a plot bunny that attacked me today and refused to let go. The rating is for bad language and future lemons. The pairings will go the usual yami/hikari as well as several other couples. This is an AU fic and some of the characters might be reacting a little differently to certain situations but I think that, given the circumstances, the reactions would be a standard human reaction and went with my ‘gut instinct’ so to speak. Anyway, a big thanks goes out to DracOnyx for her support and for her willingness to discuss rabid plot bunnies at odd hours of the day. By the way, if you haven’t read her new story, go do it! You won’t regret it!
Disclaimer – I don’t own YuGiOh. Like the other writers here, I love to play with them a bit.
Chapter One – Blind
Yami walked into the classroom, making his way to his desk. Sitting with a soft sigh, he lowered his head onto his arms and tuned out the conversations going on around him. A finger poking him drew him out of his reverie, and he jerked his head up to find a pair of mahogany eyes staring at him.
“What is it, Bakura?”
“Did you hear?”
“Did I hear what?”
“We’re getting fresh meat today. There’s a new kid enrolling, and rumor has it that he’s going to be in our class.”
“And this would interest me how?”
Bakura sat back and stared at his friend, taking in the dark circles under his eyes. His usual gruff voice was almost too soft as he questioned the crimson eyed teen.
“Another bad night?”
“You could say that. The old man wouldn’t shut up, and his latest toy wasn’t helping anything.”
“How is she anyway?”
“She’s a bitch and a half. She nags about every fucking thing and for some odd reason, my old man seems to think she’s a goddess or something.”
“Your dad needs to start picking his fuck toys better.”
Yami gave a short laugh, nodding as he responded to his friend’s comment.
“No shit. They keep getting worse as he goes through them. It makes me wonder when she’s going to dump him for someone better.”
The conversation came to a halt as the teacher and several students entered the room. Yami didn’t have much respect for the instructor, but the last thing he wanted to deal with was another detention this week. His dad was already on his case about the last batch of detentions he’d been given. The fact that he was aching proved that point quite well. He had plans for this weekend and didn’t want to be slowed down thanks to his father’s infamous temper.
“Good morning. I hope everyone had a good night and you’re ready for another day.”
“Not really.”
The others gave a positive response, drowning out Yami’s sarcastic comment. However, Bakura and Marik both heard it and laid their heads down, trying to stop the laughter that was trying to escape.
“We have a new student joining our class today. I want everyone to meet Yugi Mutou. He’s just transferred to our school.”
In his seat in front of Yami, Tristan shifted slightly to catch a glimpse of the new kid and muttered loud enough so that just his friends could hear him.
“What’s with the sunglasses?”
“I don’t know. Maybe he’s got a hangover?”
Tristan snorted at Joey’s answer and faked paying attention to the teacher when he noticed the angry look on her face.
Yami spent most of the period fighting to stay awake. He’d lost interest in the history lesson about five minutes into her lecture. The textbook was open, although he hadn’t read a single paragraph the entire time.
“Yami, would you read the next section?”
He snapped to attention when Marik poked him in the back. Crimson eyes stared blankly at the teacher for a moment and then focused as he heard her repeat the question.
“Read the next section please.”
The teenager cursed to himself as he scrambled to find the page that the rest of the group was on.
“Honestly, Yami, you need to pay more attention to what’s going on. I want a three page typed essay on why school is important on my desk tomorrow morning. Detention doesn’t seem to be working for you, so we’ll have to find another way to ensure that you start taking things seriously.”
The cursing grew worse and was nearly audible as he stared at the teacher, pissed at how things had turned out. At least she hadn’t given him detention but this was almost as bad. This meant he’d have to go to the damned library to use their computers and given how bad he was at writing, it also meant that he’d be home late.
The rest of the class seemed to crawl by as Yami stewed about how unfair things could be. If his day got any shittier, he’d go postal on someone and knowing his friends, they’d be more than willing to help him.
Mercifully, the bell rang and as he gathered his things together, the books slid off of his desk and now giving vent to his rage, he slammed the helpless items together before cramming them into his worn out backpack.
Caught in his own inner turmoil, Yami stomped out of the classroom, closely flanked by his group of friends. He was so deep in thought, he never saw the slight figure in front of him as he tried to make it to his locker. There was an odd sounding clatter as he ran into the person in front of him. Given the speed the crimson eyed teenager had been moving, both he and the one he’d run into hit the cold tile floor.
“Fuck, shit, damn!!! What the hell is your problem, kid?”
A gentle voice answered him, doing little to calm his rage.
“I’m sorry. Are you all right?”
Happy to have a target, Yami vented his anger on the boy, unaware that he was being watched by his group and other kids who had stopped to see what was going on.
“Fuck that, you little shit. What the fuck is your problem? What the hell were you thinking moving so slow?”
“I don’t know the school yet. I was trying to find Téa. She was supposed to meet me outside my classroom.”
“That’s no excuse, kid. You should be paying more attention to what’s going on around you, damn it. You blind or something?”
“Actually, yes, I am.”
The answer quickly pulled him out of the red haze he’d been enveloped in and stunned, Yami looked at the kid next to him. Crimson eyes took in the small form of the teenager, noting the similarities between them. There were a few differences as the kid wasn’t as blond as he was but the similarities unnerved him somewhat. He liked the idea of being unique and this kid had just proven that he wasn’t unique anymore, at least as far as looks went.
Dark sunglasses covered the smaller teenager’s eyes and Yami noted the red and white cane laying next to him. This confirmed the kid’s answer as to his handicap and he could hear the snickers going on around him, telling him that the onlookers had seen him act like a total asshole to a handicapped kid. This was not a feeling he was comfortable with at all.
“Yugi! Are you all right?”
Yugi’s head turned slightly as he heard a familiar voice coming from his right. He smiled and answered his friend.
“I’m fine, Duke. Just a slight accident.”
“You didn’t get hurt?”
Yugi laughed and shook his head as he responded to the question.
“As many times as I’ve run into things and tripped, I’m surprised you haven’t gotten tired of asking me that question.”
Duke just laughed and helped his tiny friend off of the floor, picking up the cane that Yugi depended on.
“True, but you worry me each time you do it. We should be used to it by now, I guess. So, who’s supposed to show you to your next class?”
“Téa.”
“Ah, I see. She got held up by her teacher. What class do you have next?”
Yugi’s tone was wry, making his friend laugh at the mischievous tone.
“Math, just my luck. You?”
“Same. I’ll walk you to your locker and then to class.”
The two friends walked off, leaving a stunned Yami kneeling in the hallway. He couldn’t believe what had just happened and was somewhat unnerved by the encounter with the new kid.
“I can’t believe my fucking luck.”
“No shit, man. Running over a blind kid in the hallway. That’s not a good way to start the day.”
Yami’s voice was heated as he replied to his friend.
“Fuck you, Marik.”
Marik’s violet eyes gleamed with wicked amusement when he’d heard Yami’s response and the comment was typical for him as he answered him.
“Anytime, anywhere.”
Yami flipped him off and headed to his locker, wondering if his day could get any shittier than it was already. Sometimes, he thought the gods had it in for him and it was looking like today was definitely one of those days. All he could do was weather it out and hope that he wouldn’t have anymore encounters that would make him look like a stupid asshole.
Bakura and the others followed him, switching out their books as well, and Yami only snarled his responses to the comments and questions thrown at him. The white haired teenager went with his friend to their next class, wondering what would be dropped on them this time.
Author’s End Note – Holy cow, that went by faster than I expected. Anyway, I should have a new chapter for “Unbreak My Heart” up in a few days and expect to update this as well. I hope you enjoyed this! Please be kind and leave your thoughts in a review!
