She is comfortable here, in her new name, her new pub, her new country. She is comfortable, wrapped in a white t-shirt, old jeans, taut muscles and a lick of tobacco smoke. She is comfortable holding her head up, comfortable catching a familiar grin, comfortable downing a pot of beer, and not thinking about girls and drinks called tea. She is comfortable here.
The door swings open, and she turns with the bar to watch legs stretch from the ground to eternity, and a clutch of blonde hair tumble in the wind. The door swings open, and the vision and the voice strut right in from her past and slap their claim down.
"Tea Gardner, what are *you* doing here?"
The breach between the old and the new gapes beneath her, as all that she ran from collides with all she has gained. For a moment, she is a tongue-tied young girl watching a goddess work her magic, but then she remembers - *her* pub, *her* country, *her* muscles, *her* beer. She throws the newcomer a lazy come-and-get-it-if-you-dare smile.
"Mai Valentine," she says, rolling the words in her mouth and enjoying the joke.
