Danegold: The Viking Brother’s Sequel

Chapter 1: The Family Arrives in Iceland

987 A.D.

~Quick Overview~

It has been five months since the confrontation with Pegasus. Everyone had settled down and things had gone back to the way things were: Peaceful. Yami had let Keith come back into the family, giving him the job of bodyguard to Yugi and the others. Jou and Malik now had the titles of “Ladies” of the house. Jou wasn’t trilled with the idea of being referred to as “Lady Jou” but no one else knew what to call the number two of a same sex marriage. Both Malik and Yugi had no problem with it. Annar had just learned to walk and began speaking small words. He was also raising hell around the house.

Now, the time had come for annual Viking games to begin. It took two months for the three Viking ships to arrive in Iceland. (Note: I’m not entirely sure how long it would take to sail from Norway to Iceland in long ships, so I made an estimated guess. >_> Just play along) The first ship had the Bolverk members on board along with some of the chosen Viking warriors to participate in the games. The second and third ship carried a few more warriors and all the supplies they needed.

Seto had kept Mokuba home along with Beowulf to keep him company. Avaldamon had come along for the games for three reasons: One: For the horse show, Two: For pulling the sleigh, and Three: Because Marik can’t go anywhere with out him. Seto hated traveling with large animals on boats. Annar had to come along too, both Yugi and Yami not wanting to leave him with nannies. Ryou had gotten sick close to the end of the trip which didn’t make Bakura very happy. He was without a servant. If it wasn’t for Avaldamon keeping him warm and Seto’s medical knowledge, there was no doubt that Ryou would have died.

However, everyone made it safely to the island, but Ryou was still ill. They all had to make camp for a few days until the sleighs were done being built. Since they only had one horse, only the immediate royals could ride in the sleigh with it. All the other Viking warriors had to walk. It was a good three day ride to the selected location if Seto’s navigating skills were accurate. They would leave as soon as the sleigh was made.

~End Overview~

“My lord Yami, we have the sleighs made and ready for travel.” Said one of the Viking warriors, still with his hammer in hand. Yami and his brothers sat around the campfire, waiting to hear that news. Their “wives”, along with Jou and Duke, were with Ryou in the tent.

“Good. Then start rallying up the men and the supplies. How many other sleighs have you made?”

“We’ve made ten, sir. And with the lack of horses, some of the men aren’t to thrilled with having to pull the supplies.”

“I’ll pay the ones who volunteer to pull the sleighs a bit extra than the normal price. How’s that?” Yami told the man.

“That should work.” The man answered him. “I’ll take their names down.” Yami nodded and stood up, followed by his brothers.

“See that you do.” The Viking nodded and went to gather the men. Yami turned to Marik. “Marik, you go and get Avaldamon strapped up to the sleigh. Bakura and I will go get the others.”

“Okay then, I’ll meet you guys at the sleigh. Oh, and I AM controlling the sleight since it’s my horse.” Yami rolled his eyes and nodded.

“Yes Marik, you’re allowed to hold the reigns.”

“Just try not to kill us on the way there, okay?” Bakura said with glare. “I want to get to the games in one piece!”

“Yes, and remember to tell Avaldamon that he is not allowed to race any deer we see along the way.”

“Yeah, yeah, I hear ya.”

With a wave of his hand, Marik went to ready Avaldamon. Bakura and Yami walked over to the tent, slipping inside. Ryou was laying on the floor covered with three layers of fur. Everyone was wrapped up in fur clothing and blankets, trying to keep warm from the cold weather. The Vikings were more adapted to the colder climates than the English and were dressed in less.

“Up and at’em everyone.” Yami said with a smile. “The sleigh is finished!”

“That’s great to hear, Yami!” Yugi said happily and scooped Annar up from his basket bed. “This little guy is getting antsy being cooped up in this tent.” Yami turned to Bakura.

“Why don’t you get Ryou while I help them pack up?” Bakura rolled his eyes but nodded.

“I’ll sit him with me in the back.” Bakura said as he walked over to the other side of Ryou and gently slipped his arms under the bundles of fur. Ryou was awake and looked up at him with heavy lidded eyes. His face was more pale than normal and he shivered despite the amounts of fur he was covered with. He snuggled up into Bakura’s fur shawl, burying his face. Bakura maneuvered around all the junk inside the tent to get Ryou outside. He carried him as quick as he could over to the sleigh, setting him down in the back.

“Bakura...”

“Stay here with Marik while I go help the other warriors pack up.” Bakura hopped off the sleigh and hurried back to the camp. Marik was whistling a non existent tune as he tied the last of the reigns onto Avaldamon. Ryou watched with blurry eyes as Marik tied something heavy and nosy onto Avaldamon’s face reigns.

“Marik, what are you doing to that poor horse?” He asked in between a cough.

“It’s a magic rattle.” He answered simply. “The noise helps to fend off any spirits we might come across while traveling.” Ryou raised an eyebrow at that but decided to ignore it.

“Are we all going to fit into this sleigh?”

“Sure, if we squeeze everyone in tight enough.” Ryou groaned and buried his face in his fur blankets. “Should it be TOO tight, then some of you will have to ride on the supply sleighs. “But you’re already here, so you don’t have to worry about that.” Ryou sighed and drifted off into a sleep, waiting for the others to arrive.

It took half the day to gather all the supplies and strap them into the sleighs. Everyone managed to fit into the sleigh except for Duke and Tristan. Tristan wanted to help the men pull the sleighs and Duke was forced to go with them. Seto would have gone with the other men but he was the navigator. If he had went with the others, then Marik would be in charge of the map, then they would REALLY have problems. No doubt he’d read the map upside down. Bakura and Malik were in the far back with Ryou, trying to keep him as warm as they could. Yugi sat next to Jou with Annar tightly wrapped in a fur blanket. Seto was seated at the very front and Marik was riding Avaldamon. Yami stood on the back of the sleigh so he could help steer. He needed to have some form of control for himself.

“Is everybody ready?” Marik called over his shoulder.

“Yes. Ride away, Marik.” Seto said calmly, studying the map. Marik looked at Yami and he nodded the ‘ok’. Marik slapped Avaldamon’s reigns and the horse took off in a quick trot across the snow. Yami almost flew off the back from the sudden jerk and the map flew out of Seto’s hand. It hit Yami in the face and nearly made him lose his balance again on the back.

“Damn it, Marik!” Yami cursed as he pulled the map from his face. He passed it back over to Seto who gripped it tightly this time.

“This is fun, Yami!” Yugi called back to him, throwing his head back to feel the cool air. “The air is so fresh, and the land is just beautiful!” Jou’s teeth were chattering as he snuggled up inside his fur coat.

“T-to-to c-cold for- for m-my t-taste!”

“Are you seeing this, Ryou?” Malik asked, shaking the boy next to him. Ryou peeked out from the furs, then buried his head again.

“Pretty.” His word was muffled by the fur.

“I-I h-h-hate...s-snow!” Jou chattered out again. Seto wrapped an arm around him and pulled him close.

“Don’t worry pup, you’ll be warm soon. Where we are now is very cold, but when we get to our destination, it will be a lot warmer.” Jou looked at him, confused. “Iceland isn’t all snow, pup. It also has volcanoes and grass lands. Even though we could be in the summer season here, there will still be places on this land with snow.”

“Will there be snow where the games are, Seto?” Yugi asked.
“There should be, but not as much as here.”
“You’re so smart, Seto!” Jou said and hugged him. Seto smirked.
“Yes, I know.”

“How long until we get there?” Malik asked.

“Depends on how the weather is and how fast the men move. We should get there by tomorrow as long as we don’t stop to make camp for the night. If we travel all this day and night, then we will be at the games right on time.” Yugi looked over at Yami with worry.

“What about your men, Yami? Won’t they get tired of pulling the supply sleighs?” Yami smiled at him.

“Don’t worry Yugi, they’ll be fine. We traveled for longer days and nights like this without sleeping. Don’t worry your pretty little head over it.” Yami blew him a kiss, making Yugi smile sheepishly and giggle. “How’s Ryou doing?”

“Still sleeping.” Bakura said flatly, holding Ryou closer to himself. “He’s stop shivering now.” Yugi smiled at him from over his shoulder.
“That’s because he’s in your arms, Bakura.” Bakura gave a ’tsk’ and rolled his eyes. Yugi looked up at Yami with a pout who just shrugged his shoulders. There was nothing he could do.

The group traveled throughout the day, stopping every once in a while to stretch their legs. They decided to take a short break before they had to cross a large, snowy plain. Tristan, Duke, and Keith came over to sit with the others at the sleigh. Keith gave Seto all the details, changes, and updates with the men and supplies so he could record them. The others just lounged about on the sleigh.

“I’m think of something that begins with….’S’.” Marik and Bakura were playing a game to ease their boredom.

“Snow.” Bakura answered the question flatly.

“Right again. I’m thinking of something that begins with…’M’.”

“Mountains.” Bakura answered.

“Right you are. I’m thinking of something that begins with…’S’.”

“You did that one already. It was ’snow’.” Marik shook his head.

“Nuh uh! I’m thinking of something else that begins with ’S’!” Bakura narrowed his eyes as he thought.
“Sleigh.”
“Nope.” He growled low.
“Snowball?”
“Nope”
“Snowman?”
“Nope!” Bakura growled
“Then what the hell begins with ’S’?!” Marik pointed up.
“Sky!”

“What the fu-” Bakura scooped up a handful of snow, patted it into a ball, and threw it at Marik. It hit his brother right in the temple.
“OW!”

“That’s not playing fair, Marik!” Bakura shouted. Marik scooped up some snow and threw it at Bakura, hitting him square in the face.

“Ha! Too slow!!” Bakura made another snowball and threw it, but Marik ducked to avoid it. Marik threw another one but Bakura dodged it and the snowball ended up hitting Yami in the shoulder. Yami glared at them and picked up so snow himself.

“Stop acting like three year olds!” He threw a snowball and his brother’s scattered. He made another one and threw it towards Bakura, who decided to hide behind Seto. The snowball nailed Seto’s temple, and his eyebrow began to twitch in anger.

“I don’t have time to fool around with you three so take this!” He threw a snowball at Yami, getting him right in the face. He then made another one and tried to hit Marik, but ended up nailing Duke instead.

“I hate being unnecessarily wet!” Duke growled out and threw one at Seto, who ducked and succeeded in hitting Jou from behind.

“OW! Hey, that hurt you slut!” Jou made one and threw it a Duke, who pulled Malik in front of him so he could take the hit. Malik wiped the snow from his face and glared, making a snowball of his own.

“I did NOT want to get involved with this but you leave me no choice!” He threw the snowball at Jou, managing to hit him head on.

“Damn pup, you didn’t see that coming at you?” Seto questioned Jou as he just stood still, the snow still scattered along his face. Jou quickly made a snowball and threw it at Seto, who dodged it only to have it hit Marik. Thus, a great snowball fight broke out among them.

Yugi hid under Ryou’s blanket with Annar, not wanting to get involved with the fight. Even Tristan and Keith joined in! Marik and Bakura broke out into a fight, tossing and fumbling around in the snow. Yami and Seto ended up having to break the two up before things got bloody. Only Marik and Bakura would find some way to turn a friendly game into a bloody brawl.

“Alright men, that’s enough fooling around!” Yami shouted. “Everyone back to your positions! We start out right away!”

Everyone groaned and got back into the sleigh, sitting in the same spots they were before. They traveled for the rest of the day and remainder of night. Only Marik, Seto, and Yami remained awake. To their luck, the night traveling went smoothly and silently. No trouble at all. So far so good.

It was early morning when the group arrived at the game camp. What Seto said about Iceland was true. They went from a snowy shore to some grassland. The campsite was set up on a grassy plain, and the air was a tab more warm. Yugi, Malik, Ryou and Jou just stared in awe at the hundreds of tents set up all over. There were Viking men and women hustling around, some with weapons, others with animals. Two Vikings came riding towards them from the entry gates. Seto and Yami got off the sleigh to greet them.

“State your name.” One Viking said, pointing to Yami.

“I am Lord Yami Bolverk.”

“Ah, Lord Bolverk! We’re glad you showed up. The king has been asking for you.” Said the other Viking guard.

“Let me get my family and friend’s settled in and then I will see our king.” The two nodded.

“Biorn here will lead you to a camping spot. The Viking Lords get their own section in the center and all others are on the outside in the larger tents. Seven men and or women in one tent. How many men do you have accompanying you, Lord Bolverk.”

“About 30, good sir.” The second Viking nodded.

“Very well. I’ll will take your men and assign them tents. Biorn, you take the others.” Biorn nodded.

“Gather what you need and follow me.” Yami and Seto went back to the sleigh.

“Seto, what about Tristan and Duke? Where are they going to stay? Duke is an Englishman and he can’t share a tent with a bunch of English hating Vikings!” Seto stroked his chin in thought.

“Hm, you’re right, Jou. Now, how are we going to get around that?”

“One step ahead of you, Seto!” That was Duke’s voice. He and Tristan were coming over, pulling the supply sleigh. Tristan was carrying a bunch of things in his arms that practically towered over his head. “We brought our own tent just in case something like this were to happen. I already have to put up with one smelly guy, I couldn’t stand to share a tent with five more.” Tristan glared at him from behind the stuff.

“Alright then, follow me gentlemen.”

The group followed Biorn through camp and to the center. There were numerous tents set up and a few servants walking around. There were horses tied up to posts between some of the tents, each belonging to a Viking lord. Biorn brought them behind the last row tents.

“This will be your row for your tents. If you already brought some, that’s fine but if you need to purchase one, we have some at the trading post.”

“We have everything we need right in our sleigh, thanks.” Biorn bowed.

“Make yourselves at home. I’ll will go tell the king of your arrival.”

With that, Biorn left the group to set up. They helped Bakura get his up first so they could Ryou out of the cold. Next down the line was Marik’s tent, then Seto’s, then Yami’s, then Tristan’s. The brothers and Seto had to leave a bit early to go talk to the king and the other Viking lords. They left the others to set up inside the tent and rest up from the sleigh ride.

Yami, Marik, Bakura, and Seto walked side by side through the camp. Most of the other Viking lords greeted them, but some turned away. Seto wanted to go to the trading post and snag a table. The post was packed with traders and their wives, all setting up their tables. Seto bought one from the king’s guard and he tied a piece of cloth around the leg, securing the table for him.

“Think you’re going to make out good this year?” Yami asked him.

“I always make out good for us.” Seto answered with a smirk. “I don’t plan to participate in the games that much this year. The more money and supplies we get, the better.”

“I’m looking to get some new weapons.” Bakura said, eyeing a battle axe nearby on a table.

“Malik says I’m not allowed to trade for myself since I have too much already. If I do trade, or buy, it has to be for him.” Bakura rolled his eyes.

“You are SO hen-pecked, Marik.”

“This year is all for Yugi and Annar.” Yami said with a smile. “I’m going to buy them the best of everything!” Seto nodded.

“Same goes for Jou. This year is for him, not me.”

“Wow, you guys sure have become soft!” The four men turned their heads at the unfamiliar voice. Yami immediately recognized the five men who stood before them.

“Well, well, if it isn’t the Oddvar brothers.”

The Oddvar’s were another big name family in Norway. The Bolverk’s have hated each and every one of them for years. The five brothers all looked alike, each with red hair and green eyes. They had a sister too, but not much was known of her. Yami had an extreme hatred for the two youngest five, who were twins. Their names were Cadby and Denby, and they were Bakura’s biggest tormentors when they were little. Marik was constantly beating them up for picking on Bakura. Only they could do that. The second brother named Mikkel and the third named Sveyn were always competing with Marik during horse events. Each were close to their horse just as Marik was close to Avaldamon. The oldest one, Ludmund, was younger than Yami but still his biggest competition during the games.

“Long time no see!” Ludmund said with a smirk and his hands on his hips. “We missed you last year.” Yami crossed his arms.

“We had important family business to take care of.”

“Everything is under control now, I assume?”

“Yes, it is.” Seto answered for Yami, sensing his building anger.

“So what do you guys want?” Marik asked in annoyance. “Not to catch up with us, am I right?” They all smirked.

“You’re still as dense as ever, Marik!” Sveyn said with a laugh. Marik took a threatening step forward but Yami threw his arm out to stop him.

“Lets try to keep this on an adult level, Sveyn.” Seto said calmly, hoping to quiet things down. He didn’t like the Oddvar family either, but wanted to keep the confrontations at a low level. Yami spoke up next.

“If you have something important to say, Ludmund, then say it. If not, then leave us in peace.” Ludmund crossed his arms with a smirk.

“We just came over to say hello. By the way, aren’t you a little old to still be attending these games, Yami?” Yami’s eyes became shadowed by his hair as he smiled evilly at the oldest Oddvar brother.

“Care to repeat that question, Ludmund?” Yami said in a wavering voice, trying to control his temper.

“I think you heard me clearly the first time, Yami. These games are meant for the strong and the young! Lets go boys, we’ve said what we had to.” They turned to leave but Ludmund had one more insult to give. “You’re not a young buck anymore, Yami, and will prove to be an easy defeat for me.” Marik growled and pulled out his sword.

“Watch that mouth of yours, Ludmund, or you’ll soon find yourself smiling with your throat!”

“Like any of us could fear a Bolverk.” Ludmund replied with a smile as they all started to walk away. “At least we all came from the same womb.” Seto had to hold Marik and Bakura back himself before the two could charge with their swords in hand.

“Stop it you two! If you let them see how angry you get they’ll continue to do it!” Seto tried to reason with them. “SETTLE DOWN!” Marik growled and sheathed his sword.

“They just make my blood boil!” He said through grit teeth. Bakura just grinned at his reflection in his blade as he thrust it strait outward.

“What I wouldn’t give to see their blood trickling down my blade!” In Bakura eyes, he saw a dancing pineapple with a sword and axe in hand, smiling a sharped-tooth smile. It spoke in a high pitched voice. ~DESTROY THEM ALL! THE BASTARDS MUST DIE!!!! KILL THEM! KIIIIIIILL THEM!~ The other three just looked at Bakura strangely and moved away from him. He was grinning like a mad man.

“I think all those years of tormenting him have finally come to a conclusion, Yami.” Marik whispered to him. “I think Bakura’s slowly going insane.” Yami nodded and looked at Seto.

“You have no one to blame for his insanity but yourselves.” Marik and Yami exchanged slightly worried glances.

“He’s a big boy, he can handle this on his own.” Yami said. “Come on, lets go see about getting some supplies.” Marik and Seto followed Yami, leaving Bakura by himself.

Back at their campsite, Yugi and the others all gathered in Bakura’s tent to watch over Ryou. There wasn’t much for them to do anyway since they dare not venture out without their husbands. Keith stood guard at the tent flap, keeping to his duty. Yugi took the wet cloth from Ryou’s forehead and dipped it into the bowl of cold water they borrowed from a neighbor. Duke made Tristan go out and ask around for some. Ryou let out a content sigh as the cool cloth was placed on his burning forehead again.

“You’ll get better soon, Ryou.” Yugi stroked his cheek gently. “Seto will get to work on some medicine as soon as we are settled here.”

“I-I hope so...I have to-to get better for-for Bakura.” He turned his head to the side and coughed.

“Don’t worry about Bakura! He is capable of taking care of himself!” Malik said with a frown. Jou placed his hand on Malik’s shoulder.

“Don’t shout at him, Malik.”

“It just makes me so mad! Bakura should be right here next to him! Not running about with the other Vikings!”

“Please-please stop, Malik.” Ryou begged him with teary eyes. “No more talk about this. I can’t bare it...” Malik smiled and rubbed Ryou’s flushed cheek with the back of his hand.

“I’m sorry, love.” He said gently. “I won’t speak of it anymore.” Ryou smiled then turned his head away to cough again. Jou picked up the fallen cloth and placed it back on Ryou’s head.

“Do you feel any better?” Jou asked.

“Not-not really.” Yugi looked at his friends worriedly.

“You’ll be alright, Ryou. You just need plenty of rest and some food. We’ll have to wait until Yami or Seto comes back with some money for soup. You need to eat.” Ryou gave a curt nod. “Poor little guy.” Annar had woken up from his place in his basket bed and crawled onto his mother’s lap. He heard the word ‘food’ through his sleep.

“Mommy, hungry!” Yugi smiled and tickled his belly.

“Wait until daddy gets back, then we’ll all have some food in our bellies.” Annar frowned and tugged on Yugi’s shirt sleeve.

“Me hungry now.”

“You’ll have to be patient, Annar. Daddy will be back soon.”

“Daddy’s already here!” Everyone turned to see Yami enter the tent, carrying a bunch of wood in his arms. Keith took the wood from him and placed it in the corner of the tent.

“Daddy!” Annar jumped from Yugi’s lap and ran to Yami, leaping into his arms. “Daddy, me hungry!” Yami chuckled.

“You mean, “I’m” hungry, Annar. “I’m”.” Annar pulled at his hair.

“Me hungry!” Yami rolled his eyes and handed him to Keith.

“Bother your uncle Keith. Daddy has to put the bed together.” Keith tapped Yami on the shoulder.

“Want me to go find him something to eat?”

“Yeah, and bring us back something to eat, too.” Keith nodded and left the tent with Annar. Yami turned to the others. “Your husbands are back so you might want to go to your tents. They have some things for you.”

“It better be jewelry.” Malik said as he stood up with Jou, fixing his fur coat. “I’ll see you later Ryou, Yugi.” Yugi nodded to his friends as they waved good bye. Yami came over to Yugi and placed his hands on his shoulders.

“Lets go back to our tent now, Yugi. Ryou needs his rest and Bakura is back to keep an eye on him.”

“But-“ Ryou interrupted him.

“It’s okay, Yugi. I-I’m feeling very tired at the moment, so-so you can go.” Yugi planted a kiss on Ryou’s cheek and stood up.

“I’ll be back later to check on you.” Ryou smiled up at him and turned over in the fur blankets to sleep. Yugi followed Yami out of Bakura’s tent and into theirs.

“What were those logs for that you were carrying, Yami?”

“Oh, just some firewood. I already brought mine in here but I was dropping Bakura’s off for him.” Yami winked at Yugi. “You know, he found something to trade so he can get a gift for Ryou.” Yugi looked at him in shock, then smiled happily.

“Really Yami?! Bakura is getting Ryou a present?!” Yami nodded. “What is it?! What is it?!” Yami chuckled and pulled Yugi to him.

“You’re just as persistent as Annar.” Yami gave him a quick kiss. “He’s getting him a fox fur cloak. The fur just caught his eye and he said he pictured Ryou wearing it.” Yugi hugged Yami tightly.

“Then there is still hope for Ryou! Oh Yami, he’ll be so happy when Bakura gives him that gift!”

“Yes, but don’t tell anyone, okay? Keep it a secret so Ryou can be surprised.” Yugi nodded.

“I will Yami!”

“Come, I bought you and Annar a few things.” Yugi hugged Yami’s arm tight as he led him out of the tent.

“As Malik would say to Marik, “You spoil me”!”

Bakura’s tent:

Bakura dropped the two sacks of supplies he was carrying in the corner and then took off the fox fur cloak. He traded his old cape for the fox fur to give to Ryou. He couldn’t believe his luck, the man actually fell for his lie about it being a rare and expensive cape. Ryou turned over in the blankets as he heard someone come in the tent. He smiled when he saw it was Bakura.

“Hello Bakura.” Bakura walked over to him and dropped the fox fur onto his blankets. Ryou sat up and looked at the fur, then looked up at Bakura in confusion.

“It’s for you.” Bakura said flatly. “I saw it to trade and knew you needed something warm to keep you from getting sick. That’s rare fox fur, so take good care of it.” Ryou looked down at the fur and took it in his hands, admiring the texture. He couldn’t believe his eyes. Bakura brought him back a gift! Just like he did with little Bakurina! All thoughts of his illness flew from his mind as he clutched the fur close to his chest, trying to hold back his tears of joy. Bakura didn’t like to see him cry. “Do you like it?”

“I love it, Bakura! Thank you so much!” Bakura felt his heart skip a beat when Ryou flashed him those big, watery doe eyes and that bright smile. His face was still pink with fever but it added a slight glow to his face. Bakura turned away and headed back over to the supplies.

“That’s good. Now go back to sleep so you can get better.” Ryou nodded happily and laid on his side, his back to Bakura. He didn’t want him to see the tears that trickled down his cheek and onto the fox fur. There was still hope for him. Bakura was showing his gentle side again. Ryou would just have to be patient, time will reward him. With that comforting thought in his mind, Ryou quickly fell asleep.
