Close Confinement

Disclaimer: I do not own Yu-Gi-Oh in any way, shape, or form. I also do not own The Pretender series from television. I am just a fan fiction writer who is having fun with a few of the characters. So, don’t sue me. You would only get a few dollars because I am a poor young adult struggling to make ends meet.

This is sort of an alternate universe. Duel Monsters and all of the tournaments did occur, but I have changed Jou’s past. It is also kind of “angsty” near the end, but all will be well. Well…you’ll see what I mean.

It’s written for a friend of mine that just begged me to write it for her. She said she would write it herself if she had creative ability, which she admits that she doesn’t have. Well, here is the edited version. Enjoy! ^_^

Seto’s P.O.V.

He finally gave into the temptation. The call had been too strong to ignore. His soul felt like it was tearing in two. His dreams were getting worse. He had not seen him for two weeks. He was becoming an obsession that he could not break. He found himself fantasizing about his former adversary, now employee, when he should be working.

When did I become so obsessed? I know so little about him. What are you really like, puppy? Are you really as loud mouthed as you appear? What is your history? Why did we fight so much? Is your bite as good as your bark? I find myself wishing to know you more. To be more than just an employer to you…a past enemy…a past adversary. But, will I ever get that chance?

I treated you so horribly, but I was really just hiding from the truth. I was denying my attraction to you by pushing you as far away as possible. Now I see. What if things had been different? It was almost two weeks ago that I finally realized the emotions I was feeling toward you. Yet, why do I feel remorse?

To think, hiring you would help skyrocket Kaiba Corp. into the next century with the public. You are one of the best public relations officers we have had in years. The staff nominated you for a moral award, the comedic award, and the achievement award. You won all three.

I caught myself staring at you as you walked to the podium. Your face was so pink, but your smile was huge. But, it looked a little strained. For once in my life, I couldn’t think of any insults as I handed you those awards. As you walked back to your seat each time, I felt…lost, sad, lonely…and regret. My heart ached. I wanted to see your real smile. My mind went blank. I saw you giving a genuine smile at me and only for me. It was almost like a memory I didn’t participate in. I didn’t realize I was daydreaming until Mokuba jabbed me in the side.

I wanted to talk to you, but I never caught up with you that night. I was actually going to congratulate you. Hmm…you probably would have dropped your jaw at that.

That night I dreamed…yet they were so real.

I woke up drenched in sweat…and unable to walk upright. I tried to deny it. Oh did I try. I tried for two days. But, then I saw you laughing as you came in the door, and it hit me all over again. I wanted to hold you and so much more. I had to rush to my office before I embarrassed myself. Luckily no one noticed.

You became a drug. I had to see you…like an addict looking for his next fix. I try to see you daily, even if it is just to argue or tease you. My secretary, Lydia, knows that I come here. Mokuba knows I come here. They keep telling me to talk to you. They want me to tell you how I really feel. But, I can’t. I don’t want to lose you. I think my soul would break. If I can’t have you, I at least want to be able to see you. Now here I am hiding in the shadows…

The tall brunette watched the figure he was spying on walk over to the copy machine. Soon the familiar hum filled the air. The figure turned to lean against it, crossing his legs out in front of him at his ankles. Soft whistling filled the air. How long has he worked here now? Two years? Since he got out of college. That puts us both at 24.

“Damn it!” The blond whirled to stare at the machine. “You just had to jam now, you piece of shit.” Yanking open the tray at the bottom of the copier, he began to search for the problem. The brunette just watched with his eyebrows slightly raised. “Great! Just great! The stupid roller broke! Damn it! Why didn’t I see this happening?” The blond kicked the machine.

What did he mean by see? Never mind. Now this is interesting. What are you going to do now puppy? A small smirk formed on the usually stiff face. He was about to step out of the shadows when a sultry voice broke the silence, jerking him to a stop.

“Jounouchi, I don’t think kicking the copier is going to help anything.” A pretty red headed woman stepped out of her cubicle to stand next to the blond. Her black suit was bordering on improper as the skirt rose up her thigh. Slim fingers ran over Jou’s shoulder.

Seto gave a slight growl. Hands off. Then the face turned to a scowl as he realized the purpose in his next thought. The puppy will be mine. His heart gave a strange wrench.

“He’s going to kill me.” The blond shook his head. Seto’s eyebrows shot up.

“Who?” She leaned against him. She was playing with a lock of his hair, while stroking his arm with the other.

“Davis. He wanted this by 1:45. It’s 1:24 now. It’s the new promotional for the game coming out next week. We are supposed to present it to Kaiba tomorrow. It’s going to rock. I already have the commercial partly drawn up. I planned on finishing it tonight. I can have it up and running officially by noon tomorrow, as long as the techs in graphics get their butts in gear.”

“There are other copy machines in this building, Jou.” He shrugged her off of him. She pouted.

“Have you forgotten that the other one fifteen floors down broke last week? It still hasn’t been fixed yet. Richest bastard in Domino and he can’t even get a stupid copier fixed.”

Seto’s glare darkened in his hiding spot next to the water fountain.

“Jou, you know damn well that this is not his fault. The part hasn’t come in yet. You know that. Geesh, what is wrong with you? You would blame world hunger on the man if you could.” She crossed her arms and stared at him, while flipping her thick hair behind her with a shake of her head.

“You’re right.” The blond smirked as he neatly stacked the papers into a pile. “He could donate every now and then, you know. He makes enough. He could feed a small African community easily for a year without feeling the slightest pinch in his portfolio. Some of my sources are starting to criticize that. Public opinion about him is starting to fall. If he wants to stay on his game he needs to put some effort into other things besides Kaiba Corp. Man, I still need to make five copies of this thing.”

Seto flinched. He’s right. I haven’t donated to any charities in a while. Hmm…

“What about the copier on the executive floor? That one is working, right?”

“Like I would willingly go there.” Jou huffed. “Knowing my luck today, I would run right into him. Oh, hey, Kaiba. How are you? Really? I’m just peachy. Do you know you’re an ass?”

“Jounouchi! He’s our boss! He signs your paycheck. What is it between you two?”

“So what if I work for him. Actually, I work for Davis. He’s the one that hired me. But…” Jou let the sentence hang.

“What, Jou?” Again, she leaned on him.

Jou actually started to laugh. “Do you know that I am actually more qualified than Davis for his job? I’m more qualified that all of those jerks on Kaiba’s board.”

What?! What does he mean? Brunette eyebrows almost disappeared into his hairline as confusion set into Seto’s mind.

“Huh?”

“I’m not as stupid as many people think I am, Red.” Jou was fiddling down inside of the machine, trying to reach the broken piece to see if he could fix it. His hips swung slowly from side to side, pulling light gray slacks across a toned posterior, immediately drawing the attention of sapphire blue eyes. He snapped back to the conversation as the red head gave a slight huff.

“Danielle or Dani. I know you’re not stupid. Everyone knows except for Kaiba” She huffed again.

“I’m still going to call you Red no matter how many how times you get after me. The nickname fits you. Even your boyfriend calls you Red.” Jou laughed. “How is Otogi, by the way?”

Otogi!? This girl is dating Otogi? My business rival?! Then why is she hanging all over my puppy?! He smirked as Jou again brushed her off of him.

“As dashing and loving as ever. See those flowers?” A huge vase of yellow lilies sat on her orderly disorganized desk. “He sent those today. I can still never thank you enough for introducing us.” There was a look of pure happiness on her face. “Even he knows you’re not stupid.”

“After Seto’s Battle City tournament, I finished high school with Yugi. You know Yugi and Yami, right? Didn’t you guys meet at Otogi’s party last Christmas?” He gave up trying to remove the broken piece. Seto pouted as Jou shut the door, stood up straight, and turned to face her, removing the tantalizing sight of Jou’s ass from view.

“The cute techs downstairs that test the equipment? Yeah, who doesn’t know them...their love life…and their history.”

Jou laughed. “It’s not like they hide the fact they are together. They will admit, though, they wish people would forget about those duels.”

“Not everyone beats Seto Kaiba and Pegasus Crawford.”

“I almost beat Kaiba…once.” Jou sighed. “One more turn. It was all set up. Then he drew that damn Blue eyes.” He shook his head.

Seto thought back to recent duels between the blond and himself. He remembered a duel where a look of triumph had crossed Jou’s face only to watch it turn to shock as he drew and summoned the powerful card. Jou had run off before he could say anything as the life points dropped to zero. No wonder he looked so devastated.

“Anyway, Yugi and Yami finally got me serious about school. I think I shocked Yugi a little when I ended up helping him more than he did me.” Jou laughed. “I shocked them even more when they saw my college entrance exam scores.

“Otogi told me about them. He was quite impressed. What are you, some kind of genius?” She laughed.

As Jou’s serious look, she stopped. “Actually, Red, I am.”

What the hell!? Seto’s face turned to one of shock.

“You sure don’t act like it.”

“I’ve seen Kaiba and how people treat him. Do you think I want the attention?” Jou turned and walked quietly past the hiding figure, hitting the elevator call button. He mumbled quietly. “No one knows what happened to me…the memories…and no one is going to find out either. Not even Yugi knows.”

“Jounouchi! What are you talking about?” She started to walk after him.

Jou turned. “Forget it, Red. Let’s just say that I sort of know how it feels to have everyone watching your every move. When I was little…forget it.” Jou jumped into the open elevator. He left two very confused people in his wake.

What does he mean?

Jou’s P.O.V.

No one knows what happened to me when I was little. I was used. After I finally got away, I changed how I acted. I hid my true brain from the world. Better to act dumb and be happy, then a genius and locked away for the rest of your life. Then that accident wiped part of my memory. After that encounter with Marik, it all started coming back.

The elevator made a slow ascent to the executive floor of the tall building. There are 60 floors and only four copiers in the entire building. How crazy is that? The only working two are on the top floor and down on the first.

A sudden image in front of his eyes made him gasp. I’m going to run into Kaiba today in this elevator, but I can’t make out anything else. Something is going to happen today… The door opened with a ding.

“Good afternoon, Jou. How are you?” The short gray haired woman called from her desk. For a 63-year-old, the secretary still looked attractive and full of energy.

“Great, Lydia. How are you?”

“Fit as a fiddle.” She puffed out her cheeks and then laughed.

“Is he in?” Jou glanced worriedly at the wood door. I will see him today at some point in time. Something is going to happen, but what?

“He left about half an hour ago. He was mumbling something. Sounded like ‘Mutt.’ Don’t know what he meant, though.”

Huh? Mutt? That is one of his many degrading nicknames for me. He walked over to the copy machine. What have I done now?

“It broke this morning. Some moron dropped something on the glass and cracked it.”

“You’re shitting me!” Jou stared at the machine. A large sign stating ‘Out of Order’ stared right back at him.

“Nope.”

“I came all the way up here, risking a confrontation, just to have wasted my time. These copies are going to be late, and I am going to get a bitch out from Davis.”

“The one on the first floor was still working an hour ago.”

“Great. Just great.” Jou sighed. “See you later, Lydia.” He turned to walk back to the elevator.

“Jou.” She called out softly.

He turned back to her. “Yeah?”

“Why don’t you just talk to him? Tell him your true feelings. Everyone here can tell you love him. We actually have a betting pool going on when you two will finally get together. He is just too blind to see for himself.”

“I don’t…know. We can’t talk. We just argue. You know this because you’ve seen us fight many times. I’m not a person he would want, Lydia. I’m not the right ‘pedigree’.” He smirked at his own joke. “You are all just wishing for nothing. It’s never going to happen." No matter how much I wish it to. To feel that again…and not just in my visions and dreams. I yearn for it.

“Yes, Jou.” She sighed. “I know. Come back up and visit me again soon, Jou.” She waved at him, giving a sad smile.

The elevator dinged. He waved back. “I will.” He stepped into the elevator.

Normal P.O.V.

The elevator made the slow descent. Jou watched the numbers flash on the digital display. On a good day the elevator could make it to the first floor in three minutes. Jou just grumbled. The elevator had stopped four times all ready to let people in and out of it. At each stop, he grew tense, expecting the taller brunette to board the elevator. Now, the elevator was empty except for him. Finally. When do I run into Seto? Oh, why didn’t I just take the stairs? I could have used the exercise. If I see him it will just be worse for me later. I’ll never get to sleep.

It started to slow, signaling that it was again coming to a stop. Huh? My floor? Who would be using the elevator now? They should be getting ready for the meeting I need to get these copies done for in…three minutes. Shit! Some genius I am when I can't even manage my time.

The door opened with a ding.
