JOEY, THE CLEANER

Prologue:

I sighed deeply as I closed the door behind me and locked it. I had to work that evening. I really wished I could stay home, but I had no choice: if I didn’t work I couldn’t pay the bills I got.
I pushed the button for the elevator and waited. When it got up, I stepped inside and pushed the button for the floor level. Outside my flat, I tucked my hands into my pockets and buried my chin in my collar. The summer had ended, the wind was turning colder and it rained more often as autumn was nearing. I was glad the company I had to clean that evening wasn’t far away from my house.
Clean? Yes, I am a cleaner. Every even And And in the weekends, I work at the local snack bar.
After I had finished my study, I had looked several times for a job, but almost never found one which I found appealing. And if I found one, I got fired in 3 weeks. Hey, I can’t help it I’m so clumsy! But since I was living alone, I somehow had to make money to pay my bills and be able to eat. So I took the two lousy jobs.
I looked up at the sky as I felt something dripping.
‘Ah man! Rain! Just what I needed!’ I thought as I started to walk faster. In the end I was running to prevent I’d get soaking wet. As I found the building where I was supposed to be, I quickly rasideside. But if I had looked at the logo on the building, I would have turned around and ran back home immediately…

I stood huffing in the hallway, trying to catch my breath.
‘I bet Yugi and Yami don’t have rain in Egypt.’
I shook my head, I shouldn’t be jealous. I should be happy for my two friends! They were fulfilling a childhood dream!
I tried to forget my thoughts and walked to the receptionist to tell I was the cleaner. She looked at me like if I was some kind of tramp, but she told me to follow her anyway. The lady showed me the closet with the cleaning stuff, I’d find everything I needed there, and told me I had to clean the upper 2 levels. I just nodded my head, trying to hide my irritation of the woman’s arrogance. I took everything I thought I’d need and took the elevator to the upper 2 levels.
I waited patiently to arrive. I planned to clean quickly tonight, so I wouldn’t be home all too late. I got out of the elevator and looked around. It seemed the people with the top positions worked here, since there were only about 6 or 7 offices. I felt a little jealous as I imagined myself having such a good job, but then I shrugged it off and started my work. Since I already had quite some experience, it didn’t take long to clean everything. I was a little disappointed though, I found more garbage than I expected. I always thought that rich people were really civilized and never left their garbage scattered on the floor. I guess I was wrong.
I was glad everyone had gone home already. I always was afraid somebody I knew would see me one day and then discovered what a lousy job I had.
Yes, I keep it a secret. I know Yugi or Tristan or whoever would help me if I only asked them to, but I don’t ask. It’s embarrassing that I can’t find a proper job and I don’t want anybody to know. I don’t want them to think of me as weak. I want to prove I can deal with this on my own.
I thought about my friends as I finished the cleaning on this level and took the elevator to the next. Yami had really wanted to go to Egypt and had taken a long, long vacation to do so. Of course, Yugi had come along. Ryou was running a child daycare and was making good money out of it too, and Bakura…well, Bakura was just being Bakura. Tea had become a nurse or something. I’m not really involved with her anymore. Tristan had a proper job at an office and was living together with Serenity. I grimaced at the thought. I still didn’t like the idea of him and my sister being together. Maybe it was just me being an overprotective brother, but something inside kept telling me he was going to hurt her some day.
A “ping!” signaled the elevator had arrived at the upper level. I got out and looked around. I frowned, there was only one office on this level and something I guessed was the bathroom. The director must work here, no way someone else would be important enough to have an entire level for himself!
I shrugged and started cleaning the hallway. I saw light coming from under the door of the office, which meant someone was still in there, so I decided to do that room last.
If I was lucky, the director would go home before I came to clean his office, so I wouldn’t have to disturb him.
The hallway was quickly done, one person doesn’t make much dirt. I glanced at the office door, no one had come out yet. I opened the bathroom door and looked around amazed. There wasn’t just a toilet here. There were also a shower, a bath and….a sauna?! Geez! What kind of company is this anyway?! Whoever owned it must earn tons of money!
I cleaned the bathroom and looked around again, still stunned by the beauty of the room. Now that everything was shiny again it looked even more beautiful. I was getting quite curious who the director would be. I hadn’t heard any sounds so that meant he was still here! Maybe I would dare to ask how much money he makes. I always envy people with much money. Maybe he even was someone famous!
I tried to remember the names of famous, rich business men and women as I took my stuff to the office. In front of the door, I took a deep breath and then knocked, waiting for a reply.
“Come in.”
I slightly frowned. That voice somehow sounded familiar, but I couldn’t quite place it. He was male, no doubt, the voice was too low to be a woman’s. But whose voice was it? Maybe he had been on TV and did I recognize it from an interview. Well, I guess there was only one way to find out.
I grabbed the doorknob firmly and opened the door. My jaw dropped to the floor as the man behind the desk looked up questioningly at me.
“Seto Kaiba?!?!??!!”

A/N: Jup, that’s it for now! Next chapters will be longer, I promise! ^_^
