Chapter 9

“You mean 3 years, my Heba,” Atemu reminded. “4 months was the amount of time between my proposal and Suguruko placing the spell.”
Heba blushed, slightly embarrassed. “Oh... I’m having a hard time telling what memories from my time in the human world are fake and what are real... So I just absentmindedly said 4 months.”
Atemu laughed. “It’s fine, aibou. We’ll need to get to work on that. However all the memories since your ‘parents’ died until now are real, however. So those 2 years with Suguruko and that one unfortunate year with your foster ‘parents’ are real.”
“Wish that last year wasn’t,” Heba muttered bitterly. The rest of the meal was spent in silence, especially since Heba was so famished, he’d have eaten the table if it were edible.
Atemu led Heba back to his room after their meal and immediately began rooting through his chest (an old pirate chest he found exploring once). He pulled out in most priceless treasure, one that he had always displayed before it became too painful to look at. The merman hid the mosaic from Heba’s view, but when the mosaic on the wall came down, the little merman couldn’t help but squeal.
“You kept it!” he cried happily, resisting the urge to jump onto Atemu and tackle him to the ground in delight. The prince laughed.
“Of course I kept it! You think I’d throw out such a beautiful commemoration?” he chuckled, placing the beautiful mosaic on the wall. Heba finally let himself go, him and the prince tumbling to the ground in a fit of giggles.
“I had hoped you had, but I realize how painful it must have been to look at, so I wasn’t sure... You didn’t have that chest before I left,” Heba admitted. Atemu smiled.
“I found that chest while I was in the tropics. It was full of items humans treasure, but now it contains what I treasure most. However, this treasure can now be put on display again, along with two others.” Atemu pulled out two golden armbands, each carved with one of the merman’s birthnames. Heba laughed happily as he placed the one with Atemu’s name back onto his left arm as Atemu did the same with the one that had Heba’s name engraved on it. The two looked at each other, too joyful to say anything. Finally, Heba couldn’t sit still any longer.
“Tag, you’re it!” he shouted, tapping Atemu and swimming away swiftly. Atemu growled playfully.
“Oh, no you don’t!” he shouted, smiling as he took after the little gamer.
