*Chapter 8: I Missed You*
It was now late and Yugi was walking back from Seto Kaiba’s in thought. It had cleared some things up but others were still clouded over with severe confusion. How was he going to tell them? How could he put it so that no one’s feelings got too hurt? How could he even face them ever again?
He had started with several questions, answered some but at the cost of having so much more.
Yugi sighed. “How do I do this?”
“Yugi?”
He looked over across the street to see Ryou holding grocery paper bags in both arms.
“Hey, Ryou,” Yugi yelled back sullenly.
“Stay right there.”
Ryou looked both ways as a few cars passed and he crossed the street.
“Where you headed?” he asked as he hopped on the sidewalk.
“Home…or where I’m staying at the moment.”
“Oh……with Ramrik?”
Yugi looked at the ground.
He cleared his throat.
“Um, where are you going?”
“Oh, to the shop. Yami and the rest of them were low on some ‘nutritional stuff’. Ya know. The basics. Brownie mix, Skittles, Gobstoppers, ice-cream. Oops!”
Ryou struggled to catch the almost falling items.
Yugi reached out and grabbed a bag.
“Here. Let me help.”
“Thanks.”
They started walking.
“So, I haven’t seen much of you in the past couple days. Where have you been?”
Yugi thought about his choice of words.
“Around.”
**
They reached the game shop doors and Yugi stopped.
“Aren’t you gonna come in?” asked Ryou opening the doors.
“Uh…no. I don’t think so.”
“Why not?”
“I just…I don’t think it would be appropriate.”
“Nonsense. This is your home, isn’t it? Come on.”
Yugi sighed. As much as he hadn’t wanted, he entered.
“We’re home!” Ryou rang through the house.
“We?” asked Bakura as he came into the room and stopped as he eyes Yugi.
“Oh.”
“Um, hi, Bakura,” greeted Yugi.
“Who else is with you?”
Yugi’s eyes widened as he heard the next voice and Yami walked in the room.
“Y-Yugi?”
Yugi cast his gaze to the side.
Yami’s eyes softened.
“How are you?” he asked gently.
“Alright…I guess.”
Joey entered from the front door.
“Hey, I was just…Yug?”
“Hey, Joey,” Yugi greeted with a hint of a smile.
“What are you doin’ here?”
“I was just…I was…”
He gulped trying to find the answer but his brain was mush. Then he looked into his arms and saw the bag.
“Oh, I was helping Ryou with the bags.”
“Well, if you don’t mind, I’ll take that from you now.”
Ryou bent down and grabbed the bag from Yugi’s arms and headed to the kitchen w he he started unloading.
Yugi was left holding nothing so started wringing his fingers.
There was a silence and Bakura sneaked off to the kitchen to talk with his hikari.
“Hey, Ryou,” he whispered in his ear.
Ryou jumped.
“Bakura! Don’t scare me like that.”
“Sorry. But…well, what do you think?”
“About Yugi and Yami?”
“What else?”
Ryou pondered on the idea.
“I think that maybe…Oh, I don’t know. What do you think?”
Bakura looked over to the cereal that he had told Ryou to buy and picked it up.
“I think that someone got me the wrong cereal.”
“What?”
Ryou looked at the box held out in front of him.
“Captain Crunch. That’s the one you said.”
“I said the Wild Berry Crunch! With JUST wild berries.”
“Oh. Woops. Sorry.”
“Well, ‘Sorry’ isn’t gonna change this into what I want. We’re going back to that menacing store and getting what I asked for.”
Ryou sighed.
“Okay.”
He knew that there was no sense in arguing with Bakura when he demanded something.
They walked out to the other room to find Yugi and Yami right where they had left them.
Ryou looked around.
“Where’s Joey?”
Yami turned his head.
“He said that he had just forgotten a CD he meant to bring and he again left.”
“Oh. Well, unfortunately, we sorta have to go as well.”
Yugi’s eyes opened wide in fear. Him?...Alone?...with Yami?...
He wasn’t sure if he could handle such a thing just yet.
Yugi then realized that Ryou and Bakura had left…and he was alone with his one true fear.
Yami looked at him with his crimson eso fso full of hurt and pain and pleading.
Yugi looked at the floor
“I-I…need t-to g-go…” he whispered softly.
Yami didn’t move…but neither did Yugi.
Yami took a few steps. Yugi stepped back twice as much and twice as quick, panting unevenly.
“Please, Yami…I really have to go,” Yugi whispered softer.
“Then go.”
Yugi blinked in surprise. He wasn’t going to stop him? Just…go?
Yami again stepped forward as Yugi tried to step back but realized that he was against a wall. He started to slide down, his breath faster and more irregular.
Yami stopped as he was right in front of his lighter half. He could see the fear and confusion in Yugi’s eyes violet pools.
Yugi looked up at Yami’s eyes: so dark and mysterious and so sensual…he couldn’t take it.
Yami leaned down, agonizingly slow. He tilted his head to the side as his lips brushed Yugi’s softly…teasingly.
Yugi whimpered but didn’t move.
Yami pulled back just to again slide his lips across the other’s.
He leaned his head against Yugi’s closing his eyes.
“Yugi…”
His ears burned at the sound of his own name coming from those exotic lips.
“…I know that things haven’t exactly been…right between us. But just because you don’t love me anymore, doesn’t mean that we can never see each other again, right?”
It was paining Yugi to hear this. Paining him so much. His eyes started to sting with tears. He started to lean into Yami to kiss him again…to hug him again…to love him again……until…
“Just keep in mind what I said about Ramrik.”
Yugi snapped his eyes open ant the other name.
Ramrik…
That’s right. He had forgotten about him. He can’t kiss Yami. That would betraying the other.
“I still love you with all my heart and I always will no matter what the cost.”
Yugi remembered when Yami had said that back when they were still an item. Then all the pain and suffering came flooding back and his eyes started to leak uncontrollably.
He pushed Yami back and sank to his knees.
“Why?” he asked between his sobs.
“Why? WHY?! WHY DID YOU GO? WHY DID YOU LEAVE? WHY DIDN’T YOU STAY?”
Yami’s guilt now came into play. He as well dropped to his knees, his emotions taking control.
“I’m so sorry. I didn’t…I wasn’t thinking and I just…”
He leaned forward on his hands as his tears came.
“I didn’t mean to hurt you…I just…”
He felt a great pressure on his chest as Yugi slammed into him, hugging him as tight as he could.
“I missed you,” he whispered, his tears still shaking his form. “By the gods, I missed you so much.”
Yami, recovering from his shock, wrapped his arms around Yugi tight.
“I missed you, too, little one. I missed you, too. So much.”
Yugi and Yami sat in each other’s arms.
Finally, Yugi stopped crying and sat up to dry his eyes.
Yami stood and held out his hand. Yugi took it and stood, still sniffling.
“Would you like some water?”
Yugi nodded. “That would be nice.”
Yami smiled and headed to the kitchen.
Once out of sight, Yugi heard a sound out in the game shop. He went to the door.
Then someone knocked. Yugi opened the door to find a young girl.
“Oh, hello,” she greeted sweetly. “Who are you?”
Yugi blinked.
“I’m Yugi. Who are you?”
“My name’s Sena. Is Yami here?”
‘Sh-She wants Yami? What for?’
“Um…yeah. He’s in the back. If you had some questions about dueling, the store is closed.”
“Oh, I know that. Well, I’ll just see him another time. But, could you give him this note for me? I’d really appreciate it.”
She held out an envelope with the word ‘Yami’ printed in glittery pink pen with a heart dotting the ‘i’.
Yugi took it.
“Yeah. I’ll give it to him.”
“Thanks…Yugi, was it?”
“Yeah. And you’re welcome.”
She waved and walked away in her pink mini-skirt and white button up blouse.
Yugi closed the door and locked it.
He looked at the envelope in his hand…and started pondering.
Yami had looked into his diary, pictures and drawings……it would be alright if he looked at one of Yami’s notes, right? Kind of balance the scale?
Yugi turned the note over. The flap was neatly tucked in the wrapping.
He placed his hand on the paper to remove it but paused.
This wasn’t right.
But then again…
He removed the flap and took out the note and unfolded it.
‘Hey cutie!
Just wanted to ask when we were going back to America. I’m starting to get board and Yanni is getting impatient.
Well, come on over to my place as usual tomorrow at…say around 8:30?
Oh, I have got to tell you what Shana did……’
He folded up the note and replaced it.
His hair hid his eyes in the shadows as he placed the note on the table.
‘He’s moved on. Everything he said was a lie. He doesn’t love. Not anymore.
And he’s going back to America.’
He started for the door and opened it to step out.
‘I’m sorry, Yami. I hope you’re happy with your choice.’
He left and closed the door behind himself as he pulled his coat closer to himself to keep from the chilling wind.
Yami came back from the kitchen.
“Okay. Two glasses of water…Yugi?”
He looked around to find dark emptiness.
He placed the glasses down and ran to the door, blowing the note off the table and into a dark crevice in the process.
He leaned out the door to find that Yugi had left.
“Yugi…”
**
Sena was walking down the street as she came up to a bench and sat down.
“Did you do it?” asked a voice behind her.
She turned.
“Hm. Easy as pie. He took it without a second thought and I saw him read it and leave afterwords wooking vawy upset,”
she said, ending in a baby-ish tone.
OwaranaimonoAite-Sorry! had to do a cliffhanger at some point!
