Chapter 9
After I closed the door, I walked around the loft to clean. As I moved around the living area, I replayed the action from the night before. If someone had told me that the CEO of Kaiba Corp would be walking around my loft wearing just a smile and a bath towel, I would have said that they were crazy. I moved by the window and stopped short; I stepped on something that hurt the bottom of my foot. I looked done and saw a button near the baseboard. I bent down to pick it up when I noticed another not too far away: they were two buttons from Seto’s shirt. I remembered jerking his shirt open and that the buttons flew everywhere. I started to look for the rest of them; I managed to find all seven fairly quickly. I looked down at my hands and just stared at the buttons.
Buttons, buttons, buttons…
The buttons of the security panel glowed a sickly green. I attached my hand-held unit to the exposed wire. The digital display started to flash a series of numbers. In a few seconds, I had the seven-digit code to gain access to the museum where the Eye of Bast was on display. It was the world’s only blood ruby in existence and it was the piece I needed to comp my my set. I quickly opened the door, entered and closed the door quietly behind me. I moved qui to to the atrium and looked down. The Eye of Bast winked and beckoned from the display case down below. I attached my ropes to the balcony railing. I climbed over and perched for a moment. I lowered myself inch by inch until I hovered above the display case. I flipped myself over and I hung upside down over the rare blood ruby of Bast.
I shook my head to clear the image. What had I been doing and why was I thinking I was in a museum? I looked down at my clenched fists. I opened them to see the buttons I picked up from the floor. I shrugged my shoulders and rolled my neck; it seemed that I was too easily distracted these days. I headed towards my bedroom to clean in there.
I stripped the bed and put on clean sheets. I saw that Seto had left a wet towel on the floor instead of hanging it up. Oh well, he didn’t know that sloppy was a pet peeve of mine. I walked in the bathroom to grab my costume repair kit. I noticed a small box on the bathroom vanity. I picked it up and gently shook it. I heard the slithery sound of a chain inside. Curious, I opened the box and looked inside. There was a silver chain with two diamond initials on it: S and X. I shook my head and smiled, arrogant jerk. I opened the clasp and put the necklace on. The initials sat in the hollow of my neck and glowed softly on my skin.
I walked to my closet and pulled out the repair kit I was looking for. I attached the buttons on bits of silver chain I had in the kit; I had turned his shirt buttons into a bracelet. I slide it on my wrist and was unable to hide my wicked smile. I wondered to myself if Seto would be able to figure out the significance of the buttons. I heard the phone ringing from the other room.
I walked over and picked up the bedroom extension. “Hello?” I said into the phone.
“Did you find it?” Seto asked huskily over the phone.
“As a matter of fact, I just did. Pretty confident in your powers of persuasion, aren’t you?”
“I didn’t get to where I am today without taking a few risks. Are you wearing it?”
“No, silly. I threw it out the window.” I said teasingly.
“You know, if you continue to be such a smartass, I’m just going to have to take you over my knee and spank you; hard enough to make you cry.”
“Oh please don’t…I promise to be good,” was my reply. “There is one thing, the necklace is missing the letter ‘E’.”
“Very cute. Keep it up and I will have to spank you. I want our relationship to be more than sex. We can talk about it over dinner later. I gotta go; I just wanted to make sure you found the box.”
“Okay. I’m counting the minutes until we are together again,” I simpered. I hung the phone up to the sound of his laughter. I went back into the bathroom to put my repair kit away. I moved back out to the living area when the phone rang again. I picked up the phone.
“Beloved one, how can I get anything done if you keep calling and interrupting me?” I gushed.
“I don’t think I have ever been called ‘beloved one’ by another woman before.” Flo replied.
“Oh gods…Flo? I wasn’t expecting you to call.” I stammered.
“Well, duh. Mokie and I are down at the coffee shop. Mind if we stop by ‘beloved one’ and talk to you?” I could hear her fluttering her eyelashes; bitch.
“Sure…why not? Just walk in when you gete. e. Oh, and do me a favor? Ask Mokie if he can bring me some more of those strawberries? I have a taste for them for some reason.”
“Okey-dokey…see you in a bit.” She said before she hung up.
I walked to the kitchen to see if there was any coffee left and I caught sight of my reflection in the cabinet’s glass. There was an expression that I didn’t recognize; I was happy. I poured the last of the coffee in my cup and sipped slowly. What was so different about my night with Seto? I decided not to dwell on it; just let whatever happen… happen. I heard Flo tap on my front door before she and Mokie walked in. Flo stared and Mokie grinned as he remembered what he had seen earlier.
“Oh my gods…you look so different. And…you’re missing a letter for your necklace. Wait…are those diamonds? You have got to tell me everything and don’t spare the details. Do you have any more coffee?” she gushed all at once.
“I feel fabulous. No, I’m not. Yes, they are. I will if you shut up and, finally, you don’t need any more caffeine,” I laughed. I took the strawberries from Mokuba and walked back into the kitchen. Flo bounced in after to me with Mokuba not far behind. Seto was right; Mokuba had a crush on my friend. I moved towards the sink to clean the berries.
“I don’t think I’ve ever seen my brother look like the way he did this morning,” Mokuba said. “Since he found out I was hanging at the club to see Flo, he’s asked me a lot about you. I think he fell for you the night he caught me there.” I thought about the last comment Mokie made as the conversation continued in the kitchen. We chitchatted for a bit before I ran the two of them out of my loft. I had errands to run before meeting with Seto later that night.
