Chapter 9: Adventures In Babysitting
Kali paced her bedroom and sighed. She knew she was in big trouble now. She was caught in her uncles' room again and they told Ryou and Bakura. Now she was waiting to see what her punishment was. Kyra watched her little sister and sighed. "Sit down, Kali," she said seriously. "You're making me dizzy doing that." Kali sat down on her bed with Atemu in her arms. "I said I was sorry to them, but they won't listen, Kyra," she said. Kyra moved from her chair and took the trembling child in her arms. "Shh," she whispered. Kali burst into tears and cried in Kyra's chest hard. She was deeply hurt by the way Malik and Marik acted for one accident.
Bakura and Ryou walked in the room and studied the scene. "Kyra, let me and Ryou talk to her," Bakura said quietly. Kyra nodded and sighed as she put Kali on the bed and left the room to her own to work on her homework. Kali fell in her pillow and sobbed. "I told them I was sorry!" she said between sobs. "I didn't mean to break anything! I was looking for my coloring books!" Ryou lifted his daughter in his arms and cradled her in his lap. "Shh," he whispered rocking her gently. "It's ok, baby." Bakura grabbed stisstissue and dried her tears gently. "Blow your nose," he said. She sniffed and did as he told her to do. "They just overreacted, honey," he said seriously. "You know how they are." "But why do they have to pick on me all the time, Daddy?" she cried. Bakura sighed and looked at Ryou. Malik and Marik watched in the doorway and sighed walking in the room. Marik lifted her in his arms and hugged her close. "Hey, dry those tears, princess," he said. "We're not mad anymore. It's ok." She looked at him and swallowed. Bakura and Ryou decided to take their leave and let the other two deal with her.
"Malik, do you have that medicine for Kali?" Marik asked a fake look of thought coming on his face. "What medicine?" Malik asked in mock confusion. "You know," he said. "The one that makes her do this!" He began tickling her causing her to giggle. "Oh, that one!" Malik said and lifted her in his arms putting her on the bed. "I think Uncle Malik has it." He pulled up her shirt and blew a raspberry on her belly. She laughed hard then. "Not enough!" Marik shouted. "We're losing her!" Malik gasped and did it harder. She laughed harder. "That tickles, Uncle Malik!" she said through giggles. He rubbed noses with her and smiled. "You wanna ride?" he asked. She nodded. He sat down so she could climb on his back and he carried her downstairs smiling. "Wait a minute," Ryou said frowning. "Where's Kali?" "I don't know," Malik said thoughtfully. "She was here a minute ago." He started turning around acting like he was looking for her. "Kali, where'd you go?" he asked pouting. Kali giggled as she held his neck.
Bakura laughed hard from the kitchen. "I'm right here!" Kali said. Malik frowned. "I don't see you," he said until he flipped her over his shoulder holding her upside down. "I see a pair of legs here that belong to her, Ryou," he said. "They're attached to something, I just don't know what." Kali flipped out of his grip and giggled. "Here I am!" she said grinning. Ryou chuckled. "Uncle Joey and Uncle Kaiba are coming over today," he said. "You'll be staying with them next week while Daddy and I take Kyra to Egypt for a few things." Kali grinned. Staying at the Kaiba Mansion was like staying at the biggest playplace in the world! Kyra walked downstairs and looked at Bakura. "Need help with dinner?" she asked. Bakura nodded.
The doorbell rang and Kali ran to it with lightning speed. "Kali! What's the rules about opening the door?" Ryou called running after her frowning. Bakura looked at Kyra and shrugged. "Did you know of any?" he asked. She shook her head. "Nope," she said. A shrill shriek meant it was Joey and Kaiba. "Take it easy, sweetheart!" Kaiba chuckled. "I'll give it to you after dinner, understand?" Kali pouted. "I have something for you too, Kyra," Kaiba said smiling. "Thanks," Kyra said grinning. Joey lifted Kali in his arms and smiled. "You been a good girl for Uncle Joey?" he asked. She hesitated suddenly. "Tell Uncle Joey what you did this morning," Bakura said. "Daddy!" she whined. "She got caught in our room and broke a glass while hunting for coloring books," Marik explained. "We got it worked out though." Kali blew a raspberry at Marik, who did the same in return. "I can dish it out too, girlfriend," he said seriously. "Honestly, you guys act so immature around her," Ryou said to himself. ve tve the kid some slack, Ryou," Malik said. "She's only six." Kali looked at Joey suddenly. "I'm not in trouble, am I?" she asked in concern. He shook his head and kissed her forehead. "Naw, baby," he said. "Accidents happen." Kaiba lifted an eyebrow. "So my broken china was an accident?" he asked. Joey gulped. "Mokuba's idea, not mine," he said.
The week passed by fast and early one morning, Bakura and Ryou had to finiettietting ready to go. Marik and Malik had the house to themselves and Kyra was yawning slightly as she walked downstairs. Marik carried a sleeping Kali in his arms as she rested her head on his shoulder. She held her new stuffed cat in her arms named Hikari. "It's too early for her to be up now," Ryou whispered seriously. "She'll probably sleep late at the mansion." Bakura nodded as he got the bags in the van while Marik carefully put Kali in her booster seat and buckled her up kissing her cheek gently. Kyra looked over at her sleeping sister to see her necklace still around her neck. She smiled brushing back some of the child's white hair and knew Kali was keeping her end of the bargain. "Ky, get your seatbelt on," Ryou said. "Yes sir," Kyra answered and did so.
Kaiba was up while Joey was still asleep. The CEO was on his laptop as usual when he heard one of his butlers walk in. "Mr. Bakura is here," he said. "Thank you," Kaiba said and walked downstairs still in his pajamas. "It was the only flight avaliable," Bakura said seriously. "Kyra's asleep in the van and this one's still knocked out. Kaiba carefully took Kali in his arms and Bakura kissed her gently. "Have a good trip," Kaiba said. "Thanks," Bakura said and left. Kaiba put Kali with Joey for now and let them sleep as he prepared to head to work. He pulled off her sneakers and put them nearby and put Hikari beside her, which she held close to her as she sucked her thumb snuggling close to Joey, who put his arms around her. He opened his brown eyes a little sleepily. "You goin' now?" he whispered. Kaiba nodded. "I'll be back this afternoon or you guys can come by," he whispered and kissed Joey gently before grabbing his briefcase and leaving the house.
Joey dozed off holding Kali in his arms until she woke up. "Daddy and Papa gone now?" she asked in confusion. He nodded. "Uncle Kaiba's at work," he said brushing back her hair a little. "You wanna go see him lata?" She nodded slowly. "I gotta go potty," she said suddenly. "All right," he said getting up and lifting her in his arms. "So does Uncle Joey, but I can wait 'till you're done." She nodded resting her head on his shoulder as they walked in the bathroom. "Call me when you're done," he said. "Ok?" She nodded as he pulled her overalls down and her underwear before sitting her on the toliet and leaving a moment with the door cracked to a bathroom across the hall since he knew he couldn't hold it. "Uncle Joey!" Kali called two minutes later. "I'm comin', baby," he said and walked in the bathroom pulling her clothes back on. "Dere ya go!" he said proudly. "Go downstairs and git some breakfast. I hafta shower an' git dressed, k?" She nodded and ran downstairs to see Mokuba sitting there eating. "Hey, Kali!" he said grinning. "Hey, Mokuba," she said and the two began talking.
Joey walked downstairs and smiled at the two. "Mokie, your bro said dat you ain't supposed to go anywhere, but home, after school," he said seriously. "I know that," Mokuba sighed. "I hate being grounded." "You shoulda thought 'bout dat before you pulled dat stunt," Joey said sternly. "Spray paintin' your teach's car ain't de way to learn." Mokuba sighed and nodded. "I learned my lesson the hard way now," he sighed. Kali looked at Mokuba. "You did that?" she asked in shock. "Bad Mokie!" Mokuba had to chuckle then. "Kali, you're a mess," he said kissing her cheek. "See you guys later!" He grabbed his backpack and ran off. Kali began eating breakfast and looked at Joey as he fixed his hair in a mirror. "What are you going?" she asked. "Fixin' my mane," he said. She looked a bit confused, but didn't say anything.
"KALI! DAMN IT!" Kaiba shouted angrily as a small streak flew past him and ran in another office. "Kaiba!" Joey said frowning. "Don't scare de poor girl to death! Hell, it was an accident!" Kaiba sighed and nodded. "But did she have to get coffee on my rug?" he whined. "Look, moneybags, you have enough for a new one," Joey said frowning while pulling the struggling girl out of the office. "I DON'T WANNA GO!" she cried. Kaiba frowned and took Kali by the hand giving Joey a look that said don't even interfere with this. He carried her to the bathroom and locked the door behind him. "Listen to me, young lady," he said firmly, but gently kneeling down to her level. "You either listen to me and Joey or I will take my belt off and spank you myself. Do I make myself clear?" She nodded looking up at him. "Good, because if this happens again, I will," he said seriously. He lifted her in his arms and unlocked the door walking out. Joey was shocked to see that Kali had immediately stopped crying. She held her arms out to him and he lifted her in his arms. "What did you say to her?" he asked in confusion. "What I used to do to Mokuba when he acted out," Kaiba said. "It works too."
Later that afternoon, Joey drove home while Kaiba stayed behind and noticed Kali was asleep in her booster seat. "I can imagine after dat fit she threw," he sighed as he pulled in the driveway and parked in the garage lifting her in his arms. He picked up Hikari and sighed as he walked inside to find Mokuba playing video games. "Mokuba Kaiba," he warned. "Dat wasn't part of de deal!" "Sorry," Mokuba sighed. "Turn it off an' go do your homework," Joey said sternly. Mokuba nodded and did as he was told. Joey followed behind him and carried Kali in his room laying her gently on the bed with Hikari underneath her arm. Then he walked downstairs to get a soda and rest for awhile.
That night, Kaiba gave Kali her bath and got her in her pajamas. She smelled like the lavender and chamonille bodywash and strawberry shampoo he used on her. The smell was enough to make him drowsy, but it would help relax her to sleep better. "You gonna read me a story?" Kali asked. "Yes I am," Kaiba said walking in his room to find Joey reading in bed. He picked up a children's book and sat down reading to Kali until he noticed she had fallen asleep in his arms. "You forgot Hikari," Joey chuckled handing Kaiba the stuffed cat. Kaiba smiled and laid Kali in a small hammock near their bed and put the cat beside her. The gentle rocking caused Kali to fall into a deeper sleep easily. Kaiba kissed her forehead and slid in the bed beside Joey smiling. "In the mood?" Joey whispered huskily. "Not with her in here," Kaiba whispered back. He kissed Joey gently on the lips. "Early in the morning...shower," he whispered in his lover's ear. Joey nodded eagarly and snuggled against his koi.
THREE DAYS LATER...
"NO! NO! NO!"
Kaiba frowned looking up from his laptop. "What did you say?" he asked frowning. Kali gave him a defiant look. "I said no!" she said sternly. "I don't want a nap and don't need a nap!" He sighed wishing Joey didn't have to go somewhere with his sister that afternoon. "Kalista, I will count to three and if you don't come here right now, you'll be in serious trouble," he said sternly. "One...two...you don't want me to go any further." Kali sighed and walked slowly to Kaiba. He grabbed her hand and looked at her. "Did we have this talk before?" he asked. She nodded. He pulled his belt off and sighed. "No, Uncle Kaiba!" she cried. "Don't spank me, please!" He pulled her to him and gave her three good licks causing her to sob falling to the floor while he put his belt back on. Joey walked in frowning. "Let me guess," he said. Kaiba nodded reading Joey's thoughts. "She got snappy at me dis mornin'." Joey said seriously. "I feel like callin' Malik and Marik and lettin' them talk to her." "Might be a good idea," Kaiba said. "She can't go home, but those two usually know what to do."
Later that afternoon, Joey lay in bed rubbing Kali's backside as she slept. Kaiba walked in the room and smiled. "She drew you a picture," Joey said. "She wanted to say how sorry she was for makin' you mad." Kaiba studied it and saw a heart with the words I LOVE YOU scrawled inside it. He smiled and sat down on the bed kissing her cheek. "Marik said she's probably homesick and she'll lash out when she's like dat," Joey explained. "He taslked to her and I dink she'll be all right now." "She's never been away from Ryou and Bakura this long either," Kaiba said brushing back some of her long hair. "I think she'll be fine too."
That night, Kali appeared on Kaiba's bedside holding Hikari in her arms. "Uncle Kaiba, can I sleep with you guys tonight?" she asked. He grunted and opened his eyes. "What's wrong, baby?" he asked. "Did you have a bad dream?" She nodded. "All right," he yawned and lifted her in the bed beside him pulling the blanket around her. She snuggled against him and yawned as she fell asleep once again. He kissed her forehead gently and smiled putting his arm around her in a protective grasp.
Four days later, Kali sat in Kaiba's lap asleep while Joey was getting something to snack on at the airport. He walked back to the two and smiled. "She likes ya, Kaiba," he noticed. "Hmm," Kaiba chuckled. "I wish we could keep her a little longer." "Ryou would have a fit and you know it!" Joey chuckled. "Yeah," Kaiba said. "De plane's here," Joey noticed suddenly standing up. Kaiba stood up easing Kali's head on his shoulder as they walked to meet Bakura, Ryou, and Kyra. The three arrived tired, but happy to be back in Domino City. "Was she any trouble?" Ryou asked in concern. "None at all!" Kaiba said brightly. Joey smiled agreeing with him. Ryou eased Kali in his arms and smiled. "She must've had one hell of a night to be this tired," he noticed. Bakura chuckled looking at Kyra. "You ready to go home, daughter?" he asked. "Yeah," Kyra yawned. "I need some rest!" He chuckled and the group headed out of the airport.
