Chapter 8

Yusei landed in Martha front lawn just as gracefully as last time, except he was tackled to the ground by all of his little foster brothers and sisters. They all wanted to see Yusei and touch his wings, the angel just laughing as he lay helpless on the ground, unwillingly to move and accidentally hurt one of the little ones. They knew that their chibiness was one of his few weaknesses, and used it to their full advantage. Martha came up and knocked each one on the head with her ladle.
“All right, children, let the poor angel up, your messing up his wings,” she chided. The children groaned and moaned, but she wouldn’t budge. “Yusei’s too kind for his own good with you kids, now let him up.”
Grumbling, the kids climbed off Yusei and the angel carefully got up, ruffling his feathers to get them back into place. “Thanks, Martha,” he said, earning a knock on the head from her ladle.
“You shouldn’t have to thank me! You need to learn to be sterner with the little ones, or else you’ll spoil them rotten!” Martha scolded. And Yusei bowed his head in defeat. She was the only opponent he could never win against.

Several days later, Aki still hadn’t spoken a word. Yusei was beginning to worry greatly about her. Hee took her aside to try to get her to talk.
“Aki,” he said gently. The red-haired girl looked at him. Well, at least she didn’t seem completely catatonic. “Aki, listen to me. You have to snap out of this. I wanted to save you, not cause you more pain. I’m here for you, and I’ll never abandon you. I don’t need anything from you in return: I just need you to be happy like I’m sure you were once. I want to be your friend, and I need you to talk to me. I need you to let me share your pain so I can help you. Please, Aki, say something.”
“How can I trust anyone ever again?” the psychic duelist finally asked. Yusei sighed and pulled her close.
“You don’t have to trust anyone. Trust is earned, not given. That’s a mistake many make, and mistake that only ends in pain. I know. I’ve been there,” Yusei admitted. Aki began to cry, unable to hold back her tears any longer. “Good, that’s the first step,” Yusei said. “I’m here, you can count on me to support you.”
Aki’s knees gave out as she bawled, Yusei quickly grabbing her waist with one arm while the other held onto her shoulders. He held her close as she let out the pain she had kept bottled up for years, crying into Yusei’s shoulder as her arms wrapped around his waist.
