Chapter Eight

The Sight of Silver

Yugi felt his body hit something hard. His world was a mass of colors and completely out of focus. Loud noises, voices and what sounded like horses bellowed through his ears. Hearing his name above the mass of noises Yugi slowly rose to his hands and knees and tried to focus. Feeling hands slip under his arms he was righted up onto his feet. “I feel like I went through a tornado.” Yugi mumbled. Suddenly the world was put into focus. Yugi stared dumbstruck at what seemed to be old times New York City.

“I think, Ishizu’s hourglass did its job.” He heard Mai said as she came to stand beside him. He noticed that her clothes had changed. She wore a Victorian style dress, purple in color, he almost snorted in amusement. Tea also wore the older style clothing and a bonnet rested on her head. She really didn’t look all that comfortable.

“How did the women manage to do this?” She whined pulling at the bust area. “It’s hard to breathe.

“Your bosom is just too large. Get over it we need to find the Mirror.” Seto growled irritated. ‘Why didn’t you leave her behind Motou?’ He growled in his head and looked down at the slip of paper Malik had written up. “The Silver Mirror should be in an auction house right now.”

“I’m guessing Ishizu gave you the information.” Yugi stated tiptoeing up to look at the small slip.

Joey noticed that they were receiving weird looks from passerbys. He glared at some. “Ya never seen people before?” He roared and had to be dragged to the others side by Mai.

“Calm down, people might get really suspicious. We can’t draw too much attention.” She hissed whacking him over the head with her fan. She smirked as he obediently nodded.

“Women didn’t have a lot of power in this age you know.” Seto informed. Mai flushed in embarrassment as other women began to whisper. “Yugi pretend you’re a little schooler.”

Yugi frowned and crossed his arms. “Are you making fun of my height?”

“Why yes, yes I am.” Seto said and stuffed Yugi’s hair into a poor boys hat. “I can’t believe I’m doing this.”

“Wow, makes me wish I had a camera.” Tea said looking around at the buildings. Then she noticed a fancy sign with the words ‘auction’. “Hey guys!” She pointed over. “I think that’s the place.”

“Oh wow, what gave it away, the sign or the people with auction cards?” Seto asked strolling over tugging Yugi along.

“Just because I’m small it doesn’t mean you have to treat me like a child.” Yugi fumed. “I think I’m capable of walking all on my own.”

“Yeah Kaiba, leave Yug alone will ya.” Joey said as they rushed forward.

“Look we all just can’t barge in there.” Mai said stopping them all. “We need to do this orderly. Some of us are going to have to hang back. We need to think this through. I’m betting most of them are rich snobs-.”

“-Kaiba would feel right at home then-.” Joey mumbled quickly.

“And,” she glared at him. “It would make this easier.”

“Yeah but, we don’t have any money.” Yugi pointed out. Joey emphasized by pulling out his empty pockets.

They all fell silent.

“It was an item that wasn’t supposed to be auctioned.” Seto said. “So it’s probably in a case somewhere. It’s most likely that the item was put on for show. It is a rare item after all, the owner is probably the host.” Seto said and got a nod of agreement from Yugi.

“We just need a way of getting in there.” He said rubbing his chin in thought. Clapping his hands together he turned to Mai and Tea. “I’m being rude here but honest. I think you both can get in.” Tea looked at him confused and Mai was bemused.

“Alright hotshot, I guess we could give it a try. Did you take the drawings?” Yugi took out the folded pieces of paper and Mai took the one of the mirror. “You owe me one Yugi.”

“I owe all of you for coming and helping me.” He said sheepishly rubbing the back of his neck. Mai smiled fondly but led Tea away.

“We should at least try and get in dere Yug I mean, something could go wrong and they might need help or some’tin.” Joey said watching them go.

“I agree with the mutt.” Seto concurred. Yugi sighed and looked around. The street was bustling with people.

“I oughta slug ya.” Joey said waving his fist.

Yugi ignored them as they started to argue. He needed a way to get in. Slowly walking over to the brick building he slipped in with some heavily dressed folks. Seto and Joey’s argument halted. “See his height came in handy.” Joey bit the inside of his cheek to stop an oncoming grin. He had to admit that was funny.

Mai fanned her face scouting the contents and people of the room. “Wow, there are a lot of snobs in here.” Tea said absentmindedly. She received a look from one of the women passing by. Mai rolled her eyes and walked into another room filled with people. A glint flared in her eye and she spotted the mirror. Walking over to the case she eyed it carefully. It was the exact one. Her reflection gazed up at her and she realized what she was wearing.

“It’s a beautiful item.” Said a man to her left, she nodded.

“Where did it come from?” She asked.

“From a land across the oceans, I happened upon it in a small village. A woman gave it to me.” He answered. “It is a curious thing really. When you look into it long enough the image changes to what you see. So you would see the mirror itself in the reflection.”

“That is odd.” Mai said looking at the mirror more intensely. “You are not putting it up for auction?”

“Oh good gracious no, it is invaluable. Such a rarity will not leave my house.” He said slipping his hands into his coat pockets.

“That’s a pity, it’s such a pretty thing.” She said and bat her eye lashes for good measure. ‘This is making me sick.’

“Hey Mai, that’s it!” Tea exclaimed pointing at the mirror. Mai gripped her fan hard nearly crushing the frail wood between her hands.

“Oh my, what a boisterous person,” the gentlemen said and glanced at her. “Are you related?”

“Unfortunately, can’t really see the resemblance can you?” She said and laughed nervously.

“Not really."

"She has an illness I’m afraid, in the mind.” He cringed. “Yes, I find it…difficult sometimes.”

“Are you talking about me Mai?” Tea asked with calm anger.

“Why no honey, I was talking about the woman over there.” Mai said indicating the woman who looked at them snottily earlier. “She looked at you nastily.”

“She did, some people have no respect.” Tea growled.

Mai noticed Yugi out of the corner of her eye. He looked around obviously. Mai took the man by the arm. “Say, why don’t you show my sister and I some of your other treasures?”

“That is a grand idea.” He said and Mai pulled Tea along.

Yugi stepped up behind the case. Pulling the door open he slipped his hand inside and pulled it out. ‘This is way too easy.’

~No one can see you Yugi. I’d like to say it’s because you’re so short, but you’ve got my help.~ Whispered Mana, her reflection in the glass. ~Hurry up and get out. I can’t hold my power for long or Seth will be able to find me, and you.~ Yugi felt a cold shroud encompass him and took off. Slipping the mirror into the small sack Yugi tightened it onto his back. His foot caught in someone elses however and he fell to the ground. The Hourglass slid across the floor and he gasped. ~What are you dwaddling for?!~ Mana hissed.

“I need to get the hourglass!” He shouted and faces turned in his direction. He froze on the spot. ‘Oh no, can they all see me.’

~Run, no one can see you yet.~

Yugi sighed in relief and sped towards the hourglass. A young boy picked it up. Yugi hesitated but snapped it from his hand and quickly stuffed it back safely into his pocket. “Mommy, I think there’s a ghost in here.”

“Well it is a very old house.” She said and tugged him along. Yugi sighed in relief and walked outside. Seto and Joey were seated amongst a bunch of women. Yugi gaped. ‘Is this what happens when they’re-Seto is left alone for too long?’ He wondered. ‘You’d think Joey being around him would scare them off.’ He chuckled and slipped into an alleyway.

~This is where we part. I don’t think Seth is onto your trail yet. Keep up the good work.~ The cold veil vanished and Yugi met eyes with an old man.

“Am I dead?” He asked.

“Um, no, I’m a ferocious ghost!” Yugi mustered up making the man freeze in fear. Yugi’s eyes beaded at the motion and started laughing. “I hope you live long and well.” He cheered and ran out to Seto and Joey. The women around them cooed and awed at him.

“He’s so cute.”

“Is he your little brother?”

“I want to pinch his cheeks!”

Yugi flushed and stomped on Seto and Joey’s foot unanimously. “Your girlfriends are waiting for you.”

“Oh, you’re taken?” A girl asked Seto.

“Yes he is, and he’s not being very faithful-and neither are you, Joey!” Yugi’s eyes filled with false tears.

‘Quite the little actor our Yug has become.’ Joey thought and rose from his seat. “A’right, a’right, the little tormentor has spoken.”

“Joey Wheeler what are you doing amongst all those women? Don’t you know how to be faithful to your lover?” Mai yelled and whacked him over the head with her fan.

“Joey doesn’t have-.” Seto covered Tea’s mouth and Yugi stomped on her foot. One more and he would have killed everyone's toes.

“I think it’s about time we got going.” Yugi suggested and received nods from his comrades.

“Ah, will we be seeing you again?” Asked a vibrant redhead.

“Sorry ladies, I prefer brunets.” Joey said. Mai and Yugi sent a knowing glance at him. “Right honey bunches.” Joey cooed at Tea. She screeched profanities and was pulled along.

“Seems we’re going to be the laughing stock of New York city.” Seto mused.

“No Tea, Joey, you and Mai are, I think I’m pretty safe.” Yugi said everyone shot a look his way. He grinned which broke smiles on three faces, a smirk on the last. Taking out the hourglass Yugi tipped it so the sands began to run. Waiting for a little while he just watched them fall. “Do you think they had hourglasses in Ancient Egypt?” He asked aloud.

“Probably not.” Seto said and everyone held onto Yugi’s hand which clasped the hourglass.

“Oh I don’t want to travel like this again.” Tea whined.

“Shut up.” Everyone growled and she pouted.

“He’s right there!” Yugi turned and saw the old man from the alleyway.

“I’m guessing you ran into some trouble Yugi?” Mai asked looking at the Hourglass worriedly. “Come on little hourglass.”

They all felt the familiar tug of time and the clocks reappeared. The alleyway was left empty save for the old man and two policemen. “I told you I saw a ghost, now there’s a whole family of them!”

*

Yugi felt his body crash into soft earth. Feeling better than the previous time he stood quickly just as blades clashed over his head.

Not really...dark ne? I hope this was a little more uplifting and amusing. ooooo cliffy, poor Yugi is he okay? As promised Bakura and Ryou shall make an appearance. R&R they are skittles!
