---Chapter 08---

The salty air was deceptively cool throughout the day. Often, anyone not used to such a climate would easily sunburn. Luckily for Mokuba, He had remembered sunscreen before strutting down the empty beach, bare feet kicking up white sand that glistened like crystals.

The afternoon sky had long since shifted to dusk and Mokuba found himself sitting quietly on the pale sand. The stars collected overhead blanketing the vacant beach in peaceful surrealism. It made him feel even more alone.

This was rather silly when Seto sat not five feet from him. The brunette was fast asleep, propped up in one of the beach chairs they had brought. His shoulders were rigid and he did not appear to be very comfortable. His usual stoic expression had fallen away to reveal one of discontent, his eyebrows knitted together and mouth rigidly closed. Mokuba was sure the proud and stubborn workaholic- CEO of Kaiba Corporations had not intended to nod off. Seto did not nap. He must have been utterly exhausted.

Mokuba studied the guarded scowl with troubled eyes. He would let his brother sleep as long as possible. Maybe he should also take a good rest himself. The pair had stayed up until dawn to watch the sun rise on Mokuba's 16th year. Hyped and scorning sleep, Mokuba had convinced Seto to forfeit sleep for the rest of the morning. Soon after, the younger Kaiba charged the potentially cold water, hoping for the best. When Seto got too close, Mokuba took the opportunity to drench him thoroughly. It took all of Mokuba's pride to suppress any of the various sounds of fear when Seto glared at him before stripping off his soaked shirt and throwing it on the ground.

Already barefoot, the brunette quickly found his way into the water and began pursuit of his offender.

Looking back, splashing such an opposing figure might have been a bad idea. Chuckling under his breath, Mokuba settled himself on his side. The sand was cool and just sharp enough to keep him from falling easily into sleep. The moon was full and bright and aided his vision as he stared at Seto. The opposing figure of earlier was still present in his tense expression and Mokuba found himself wondering at how few times he had actually seen his brother sleeping. Not since they were kids and enjoyed each others company in bed nightly, and a limited few times at the Kaiba Estate.

Cautiously, Mokuba's eyes wandered down to the brunette's chest, appreciating the un-Seto Hawaiian shirt Mokuba had gotten him to buy, and lower to the long trunks that fit loosely around long, tanned legs. One of Seto's legs was bent up just enough to leave a clear view of his thigh. If he looked hard enough maybe he could almost see…'it.' Thankful for the moonlight being at his back, Mokuba studied the smooth skin as far back as he could. Lately, he had been feeling like a pervert or voyeur. Every little flash of skin, well-fitting set of clothes, strange sound, you name it, and everything he knew about sex would flash through his mind. The fact that this was his brother he was passionate for had came up too, but he had gotten over that shameful detail years ago.

Something sharp cut into the delicate muscle of his heart, a slash reflecting the one visible on Seto's upper thigh. Its brothers were better hidden by the distance, but it only took that one to ruin the sexual fantasy that had already began to build in Mokuba's conscience. His hormones died away as his resolve strengthened and he remembered for the second time that day why he'd chosen such a remote place for his birthday.

The first time he and Seto vacationed on Ambrosia was also the first time Mokuba seen the scars across Seto's back. The shirt Seto had refused to remove even while swimming failed to hide his entire back the entire trip. The wind picked up the cloth at the back and left Mokuba speechless. Of course, Mokuba had no idea if the marks were fresh or not at that time; he still didn't know. When Mokuba suddenly rushed to his brother and tried to raise the shirt up to see what he could do, Seto struck him. Granted the strike was not really painful, but the force was enough to knock him off balance. Mokuba had landed squarely on his butt, splashing water everywhere. Seto's expression was enough proof for Mokuba to believe he hadn't meant to do it.

No matter how much Mokuba tried, he could get no information out of his brother that night. Only a promise. He was told that Mokuba was too young to understand and promised to tell him when he was an adult. No more had been said of it since, but the mystery around Seto had been growing darker ever since.

Seto stirred, straightening out his legs in the beach chair and opening his eyes moments later, eyes clear as if he had never been asleep at all. Mokuba continued to stare at the cobalt-eyed creature before him. The moon made smooth skin shimmer, the shadows adding infinite depth and creating an ominous aftertaste. The creature was surely surprised that the day had left and when those beautiful, secret-filled eyes turn to him, Mokuba offered up a smile from his place at its feet.

He wondered if Seto would consider him an adult now.
