Waking

Author’s Note – For some reason, this story isn’t letting me work on anything else. I’ve got a few others to update, but I can’t seem to focus on the other stories. Heck, I even dreamed of this chapter last night. Weird huh?

Love and much appreciation goes out to my heart family.

To the readers, I hope you’re enjoying it. There’s been hits to the story but no reviews, so I’m not sure if I’m doing this in a way you enjoy or if there’s anything to change. I sincerely hope that all readers review for the writers.

Chapter Eight – Waking

The older man followed the figure garbed in light blue scrubs, anxious to see his godson. The doctor had told him that Yami would be all right but would need some care at home until he healed. There had been evidence of a lot of abuse, some of which looked to be years old. The news infuriated the game shop owner, but he bit the rage back and asked that the records be sent to his attorney.

Solomon was lead to a room, and he quickly spotted the small form of his godson laying in the hospital bed. He pulled a chair close to the bedside and sat down, taking the hand that didn’t have the IV needle embedded within it.

Plum colored eyes gazed over the sleeping teenager, and his voice was quiet as he addressed Yami.

“I promise you that you’ll be safe from now on and loved as you should have been. I tried to stay in contact Yami, but your father wouldn’t allow it. You’re not going to go back to him, I promise you that. No more pain and no more fear. You’re going to finish your childhood as you should have, having fun and no more worrying about what to find when you get home.

Solomon remained in that position for quite some time, lost in thought. It wasn’t until there was a soft moan that he moved, leaning forward and gently squeezing the hand he held.

“Yami?”

The teenager’s first hazy thought was that he wasn’t feeling much pain, which was a surprise considering how badly he’d felt before the blackness had taken him. The next sensation he could sort through was being cold. Before he could try to move, a set of gentle hands settled a blanket around him before taking up his hand again.

Surprised by that, he struggled to open his eyes, slowly coming to the realization that a large part of the grogginess was due to medication.

Solomon smiled as crimson eyes slowly opened, struggling to focus on the room around him.

“It’s all right, Yami. You’re safe now.”

Yami turned his head, barely able to focus on the person sitting beside his bed. It took a moment before he recognized his godfather, and his confusion continued to grow. Where was he, and why was his godfather here?

The older man caught the confusion in the garnet depths and was quick to explain, not wanting his godson to become frightened or confused.

“You’re in the hospital, Yami. You had to have emergency surgery, but the doctor said you’ll be all right with rest and time.”

“H..how?”

Solomon squeezed the hand gently, leaning over to add another blanket. Yami’s hand was extremely cold, which wasn’t surprising given everything he’d gone through. According to the doctor, the teenager had lost a bit of blood and would need time to replenish what he’d lost.

“Your absence was noticed at school. Yugi-chan called me and informed me that there may be a problem. Since Kenichi had already forced me into a corner about his plans, I’d already had some things in motion about him and even about you. I just had to move things up a little earlier once Yugi-chan explained his worries.”

Yugi had been worried about him and called? This didn’t make sense to Yami at all, especially given how badly he’d treated the smaller student when they’d first met. Though the bafflement, Solomon’s words sank in.

“In motion…about me?”

“Yes. I’ll be honest, Yami, your father is in about to do something highly illegal and could cause a lot of diplomatic issues between our country and theirs. I couldn’t sit by and let it happen. It’d give archaeologists a bad name. You shouldn’t have to be caught in the middle of all of it. Once this goes down, you’d have been placed in foster care and I didn’t want that for you.”

Even if he hadn’t been drugged, this wouldn’t have made sense to Yami at all. Why would this man even care what happened to him once his father was arrested for his stupid get rich scheme? Granted, this was his godfather and he had some good memories of him but why would Solomon care about someone he hadn’t seen in years?

“At the moment, I have temporary custody of you, which helped since you needed medical care urgently. Once the doctor says it’s all right, you’ll be coming home to live with Yugi-chan and me.”

The confusion deepened, and Solomon squeezed the hand again when he saw the expression in the teenager’s eyes.

“Right now, Yami, all you need to worry about is getting well. You’re safe now, and nothing is going to happen to you again. We’ll talk more about all of this later when you’re more alert and able to ask questions. Sleep now.”

Sleep sounded good, almost too good. Yami couldn’t fight the overwhelming waves of drowsiness that washed over him. His eyes slipped closed as he lost the battle to stay awake.

Once Yami was asleep, Solomon reached for the phone and called the Kaiba residence, intent on filling them in on what was going on. After speaking with Seto’s adopted father, he was soon handed off to his grandson.

Yugi looked both worried and concerned when he ended the conversation with his grandfather. Seto caught the expression and leaned against the piano.

“Yugi, are you all right?”

The pianist nodded, blowing bangs out of his face. For once, he didn’t have his sunglasses on, knowing that Seto and his family wouldn’t be discomfited by the blank stare.

“Yeah, that was Grandpa. His godson is in the hospital, and he’s going to stay with him until he gets out.”

“I didn’t know Grandpa had a godson.”

Yugi gave a small smile to where he heard his friend’s voice come from.

“I didn’t know until recently either. He’s going to be living with us after he gets out of the hospital.”

Seto frowned, sharing a look of concern with Mokuba. Given Yugi’s handicap, the teenager relied on things not changing in order to stay comfortable in his home environment. All of his friends and their families knew this and endeavored to keep their homes from being rearranged drastically in order to give Yugi some sort of freedom while in their homes.

“Are you going to be all right with that?”

Yugi knew what he was worried about and shrugged as he responded.

“I’ll have to be. I’ll just be bruised up a bit until I get things memorized again. It won’t be the first time.”

Seto bit back a soft chuckle and agreed. Yugi was remarkably high spirited about his own difficulties. Everyone would be worried about falls he’d take, and the small teenager would just giggle over his own clumsiness and laugh off the pain of the bruises he’d receive.

Malik came in a moment later, hearing the laughter and was quick to get an explanation as to what was going on. The blond grinned and reminded them of the spill Yugi had taken that had landed him and Tea in a very awkward position.

Laughter filled the room as everyone reminisced on that and Yugi blushed, bringing more laughter to the friends.

“Hey Yugi, so who is this guy?”

Knowing they’d find out soon enough, Yugi answered softly, voice still cheerful.

“Yami Takeda.”

Lavender eyes met sapphire for a moment before Malik questioned what he’d heard.

“Yami Takeda, as in the guy no one wants to cross? The one whose friends with Marik, Bakura, Joey, and Tristan?”

“That’s the one. Which reminds me, Seto, would you be so kind as to dial this number for me?”

Yugi handed him the paper that had been in his pocket since his conversation with Bakura. A moment later, Seto had dialed the number into the phone and handed it to Yugi.

“Hello?”

“May I speak with Bakura please?”

“That’s me. Who’s this?”

Suddenly nervous, Yugi answered the gruff voice. His free hand clenched and relaxed alternately at his side.

“It’s Yugi Mutou. I spoke to you today about your friend.”

The gruff voice became sharper after he heard the musician’s reply.

“You heard something about Yami?”

“That’s why I’m calling. I just got off the phone with my grandfather. Yami’s in the hospital right now, and the doctors say he’ll be all right. Grandpa is going to stay with him until he’s released.”

“Shit. That son of a bitch, I’ll kill him.”

Yugi immediately knew who Bakura was talking about and was quick to try and reassure the angry teenager.

“It’s being taken care of, Bakura. I can’t go into details, but he won’t be seeing the light of day for a very long time.”

That snagged Bakura’s attention, and a smirk settled on his face as he settled onto the chair he’d left to grab the phone.

“Oh really?”

“Yes. He said some things in front of the wrong person, and action is being taken. Yami’s safety and future are also being handled as well. My grandfather isn’t going to allow him to stuck in foster care.”

That had been a concern of Yami’s, and Joey had mentioned it after school today during a conversation about their missing friend. The last thing the group wanted was to lose their friend due to being moved into a foster home away from their school district.

“He’s going to make sure Yami’s all right afterwards?”

“From what I understand, Grandpa is working for full custody and Yami will be living with us once he’s out of the hospital.”

Bakura let out an inaudible sigh. It seemed that things may be working out for Yami after all. Time would tell if his friend would be okay in this new situation, but at least this meant the crimson eyed teenager would be close by and wouldn’t have to change schools.

“Sounds good so far. Will he be allowed visitors at the hospital?”

“Honestly, I don’t know. Grandpa will be calling me back to check on me. I can ask then and get the particulars for you.”

“All right. Call me or catch me at school when you know something.”

Yugi agreed and ended the call, settling more comfortably on the piano bench. He rested his elbow against the piano and then laid a cheek against his palm.

“I have a feeling things are going to get really interesting from here on out.”

The others could only agree with their friend, wondering what this new addition to Yugi’s life would mean for their group. The topic soon changed back to music and as Malik took his place behind the drums, Yugi took a deep breath and tried to get his mind off of his worries.

Things would work out. They always did.

Author’s End Note – I think it’s fairly safe to say this story is taking shape. I’m surprised the computer let me get this all done in one day. I like it when things work nicely. Hopefully, I’ll be able to do more work on other stories soon. Please take the time to review! They really help us writers out. Thanks for reading! See you later!
