Chapter 8
Bakura came down the stairs with his and Ryou’s coats. He tossed Ryou’s coat to him, “Come on, I need to get out of here for a little while.”
Ryou put on his coat and looked over at the yami, “Where’re we going?”
Bakura shrugged, “I dunno. Let’s just stretch our legs and maybe get something to eat.”
Ryou nodded and took the spirit’s hand in his as Bakura walked by. He smiled up at the yami and they walked out of the shop.
Yami leaned against the headboard of Yugi’s bed, quiet after listening to Yugi explain what he had done while he was out. He closed his eyes and sighed, putting his head back against the wall.
Yugi glanced at him from his homework that was atop his desk. He looked back down to his desk, his worry about Yami increasing. The former pharaoh was usually never quiet except when something was bothering him.
The boy closed the book on his desk and got up, going over to the bed and taking a seat next to Yami.
“What’s wrong, Yami?” Yugi asked, looking up at the spirit.
Yami opened his eyes and looked down at his hikari. He tried to smile warmly, but his eyes made the warm look incomplete. They seemed cold and distant.
“I’m fine, yugi,” Yami said, “I’ve just been doing a lot of thinking.”
Yugi settled himself back again the headboard. If Yami wouldn’t tell him, he’d just work it out of him slowly.
“What about?” he asked, leaning his head atop the spirit’s shoulder.
“My past, my choices,” Yami answered, honestly, seeing no point in denying his feelings to his other half, “How would it have been if it had started out differently.”
“Does it really matter?” the boy asked, “It’s not like you can change it. What’s done is done.”
Yami was silent for a moment, then spoke, “You’re right. There’s no point dwelling in the past.”
He smiled gently at the teenager, “Thank you, Yugi.”
Bakura held the door open for Ryou, then went in after him. The warm air flowed over their cool skin, bringing color back into their cheeks.
A woman came up to them with a smile on her face, “How many?”
“Two,” Bakura said.
“Alright,” she grabbed two menus, “Follow me.”
They followed her to a small booth, each taking a seat on either side of the table. Bakura slipped out of his coat and sat it beside him, then took the menu that the woman was handing him.
“You’re waiter’s name is Chase,” the woman said, “He’ll be with you shortly.”
“Okay, thanks,” Ryou nodded to her and opened his menus.
The waiter came quickly, took the orders, and left again, leaving the two to stare anywhere but at each other.
“Bakura,” Ryou finally said, looking up from the table, “What are you thinking?”
“You know what I’m thinking about,” the spirit said, looking up at the boy, “I still don’t know, Ryou.... I’m sick of this shit. I don’t want help from Kaiba.”
“You don’t have to do it if you don’t want to,” Ryou said, taking Bakura’s hands in his over the table, “It’s your choice.”
“I have to take it,” Bakura said, staring into Ryou’s eyes, “For you. I can’t a selfish bastard and fuck up your life more than it already is.
“This is all happening because of me anyway...”
“No, it’s not,” the teenager squeezed the spirit’s hands, “Don’t blame yourself. I’m glad you’re here. I’d be empty without you. At least you’re I have you through all this.”
Bakura sighed and looked off to the side at the wall, “You wouldn’t be in this mess if it I weren’t here.”
“Then where would I be?” Ryou’s brows drew down and he frowned.
“At home... with your father who would still love you.”
Ryou leaned forward and grabbed Bakura’s chin, turning his face to him, “That man would never love me. He never did and he never will.
“Do you think I really want all that? Do you? To not have you and be with my father who’s obviously cold and heartless?”
Bakura stared at him, silent.
Ryou released his chin and sat back, re-gripping Bakura’s hands. He looked down and spoke quietly, “I don’t want that.”
Bakura sat for a moment, then leaned over the table and yanked Ryou forward by his hands, capturing his lips in a passionate kiss.
After a few minutes, they pulled back and looked into one another’s eyes.
“I love you, Ryou,” Bakura said, gripping the boy’s hands tightly, “I will always love you. I’m going to take that job, so you don’t have to struggle.
“I’ll do anything for you and this is only a small thing. For us, I’ll take that job.”
Ryou smiled at him, “Thank you, Bakura.”
“Oh, look, here comes our food, “Bakura said, watching their waiter making his way toward them with a tray full of food in hand.
Ryou and Bakura walked hand-in-hand down the street. The cool, crisp air blew past them, blowing through their white hair.
Bakura stuck his hand in his pocket and looked at Ryou, “Why don’t we go to Kaiba Corp. And just tell Kaiba in person? It’s only a few blocks away.”
Ryou shrugged, “Sure, let’s go.”
The turned the corner and headed to Kaiba Corp.
