Chapter 7
Heba happily sat on the bed, that memory of the promise he had made suddenly allowing many, many more memories to flood his mind in the now familiar surroundings. He was in Atemu’s room, laying on Atemu’s bed. Where there had once been a collage of beach stones and broken seashells forming a mosaic of the two mermen happily lying under a branching piece of coral resembling a tree, was now a mosaic of a tanned stoic looking prince with sad eyes. Heba hoped Atemu hadn’t thrown away that beautiful mosaic he remembered so fondly. He would understand it if the prince had: The memories it contained for him must have been painful.
As if on cue, the prince cautiously swam into the room, rushing to Heba once he saw the merman was awake. Heba was smiling, something Atemu hadn’t expected from the state Jono had found the young merman to be in. Atemu looked at Heba with a sad smile on his face. The merman decided to “turn that frown upside down” as a false memory of a human mother once said.
“I remembered, my Yami,” Heba said, grinning mischievously. Atemu, not daring to get his hopes up from the hint, looked at him questioningly. “I remember my promise the day you told me I was to go see the Sea Sage Suguruko. About how I ‘wouldn’t let the old kook make me forget’.” Heba used the exact words from his memory, earning a look of total shock from the prince. The little mischievous gamer continued. “I remember my birthname is Heba.” More astonishment radiated from that face. “And that you proposed to me just 3 months before the Seawitch Anzu began her attacks.”
Not able to deny the truth anymore, Atemu cheered with intense joy, tears flowing freely, and he brought his Heba into a tight embrace. ‘Oh, Gods, thank you, thank you, thank you!’ Atemu thought happily, Heba laughing along with the prince. His stubborn Heba, his defiant gamer, had managed to ward off the most powerful memory erasing charm one of the most powerful Sea Sages had to offer. The prince cried and laughed with joy. How could he have every been so stupid as to put them through all of this pain and suffering when there was no need in the first place. They had tried to hide Heba in an attempt to thwart the Seawitch from brainwashing him and making his powers of purity into powers of taint. Why had they even tried if Heba could fight off a spell like THAT and break it in less than a day of being back home?
“Heba... I’m so sorry,” Atemu sobbed, his voice cracking from the mix of joy and grief. For once, Heba was the one to console the crying merman, the roles always having been reversed before.
“It’s okay, my Yami, mi hitori no boku. I’m back now, and the memories are flooding back unscathed. Everything will be fine...”
