The typical baritone range is from the second F below middle C (F2) to the F above middle C (F4), which are exactly two octaves. Chapter Seven – I Won’t Dance
Kaiba Corp. lobby was all chrome and glass, as Draco made his way to the front desk, “I’m Draco Eberhardt and I have an appointment with Mr. Kaiba.”
The secretary nodded and checked her computer screen, “upstairs on the top floor, he’s expecting you.” She said before turning away and reading her paper. Draco shook his head and got into the lift, as he pressed the button for the top floor, as it ascended, he stared out at the expanse of Domino City. When the doors opened, Draco stepped out and glanced around noticing two large doors and another secretary. But he never got to speak to her when the doors of the office opened and out walked the boy he had slammed into a wall.
“Mr. Eberhardt, come in. We have some business to discuss.”
“That we do, Mr. Kaiba.” He said walking into the office, watching as Seto walked around his desk and sat in the large leather winged back chair. “You called this meeting, what do you want?”
“I know who got the Health Inspector on you, and I want to take care of it.” Seto said as he motioned for Draco to sit, “can I offer you some coffee, Mr. Eberhardt?”
“No, but an explanation would suffice.” Draco replied as he sat in one of the chairs, and stared at Seto. “I remember you, you were the one who was putting Jounouchi down in the mall, and I slammed you into a wall, why are you even helping me?”
Seto sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose, “because of Jounouchi. I saw him in the club singing and his heart is there in your club. The reason I called you here, is because there is a very simple way to get the Inspector off your back. Your club is charming, the wait staff excellent, the food is decent, and the fact that you got individuals who can actually sing, is impressive. And your wife is lovely and very devoted to the club. Sign this and we can nip the Inspector in the bud.” Seto said as he pushed a file over to Draco.
Draco opened the folder and glanced at the pages within. “Is this the only way?” he inquired, as he got to the bottom of the first page. “I mean…who would own it, if I were to do this.”
“Kaiba Corp, however, it would be yours as is stated in the contract. I’m buying the building. I don’t want the profit, I don’t want anything.”
Draco narrowed his gaze, “are you trying to buy Jounouchi’s love?”
Shaking his head, Seto sighed, “No. Though I can see how you would think that. If I really wanted to buy his love, I’d offer him the world on a silver platter. But in all honesty, it is Jounouchi’s own father who sent the Health Inspector after you, and they know enough to know that you do not fuck with Kaiba Corp...” Seto said with an almost malicious grin.
“So, in your purchasing the building, you are really turning a screw in the Health Inspector’s plan to put me out so that Jounouchi has no choice but to return to his father?”
“Exactly.” Seto replied as he reached for a cup of steaming coffee and took a sip. “What you said to me, when you slammed me into a wall, made me realize a few things, and one was how I do care about Jounouchi, and what makes him happy surprisingly makes me happy, and I have never seen him so happy until I saw him singing at your club.”
“How did you know I bought the building?”
“I have my methods, Mr. Eberhardt.” Seto replied, “None of them are something I can speak of, you understand.”
“Of course.” Draco said as he was about to sign the document when his cellular phone started to ring. “Will you excuse me a moment?” Seto nodded, watching with narrowing sapphire eyes as the man answered his phone. “Yes, this is . . . what?!” he snapped into the phone. “I’ll be right there. Who found him? Is he there? Don’t let him leave; I want to ask him a few questions.” He said, before snapping the phone shut. “I’m sorry, Mr. Kaiba, there has been an emergency and I have to go.”
Seto nodded slightly, “I understand, is your wife alright?”
“My wife is fine, I’m assuming. That was the hospital. Someone named Atemu brought Jounouchi into the emergency room not ten minutes ago.”
The heart in Seto’s chest twisted and tightened at those words as they left Draco’s mouth. “May . . . may I come along, I can give you a lift in my limo if you like.” He said, swallowing as his mouth suddenly felt full of cotton. Pressing a button on his intercom, he said, “Cancel my appointments for the day.”
“Sir…you have…” the secretary started.
“I don’t give a flying fuck what I have lined up. Cancel the damn appointments.” Seto snarled as he rose and headed to what appeared to be a closet, but pushing a button revealed a private elevator. “come on, I’m not waiting.” He said watching as Draco walked into the elevator and as soon as the doors closed, they zipped down to the ground level where Seto’s limo was waiting.
~*~*~*~
Atemu paced in the waiting room, and anyone who knew him could tell that the anger radiating off his body was palpable. He was pissed and he ran his hand through his spiky tri-colored locks as he kept staring between the clock and where they had taken Jounouchi. Doctors had been in and out but no one had told him anything. He thought back on how he had found his aibou’s friend and growled low as a fresh wave of anger and hatred ran through his soul.
. . . Atemu reached Jounouchi’s apartment where he stayed with his father, the door was open, and the sounds of someone snoring could be heard. Pushing the door further ajar, Atemu strode in gazing around with crimson eyes. The sennen eye glowed on his forehead, and he used his Shadow powers to immobilize the man on the couch that was probably Jounouchi’s father. There were new bottles scattered about and the whole house reeked of alcohol. “Jounouchi?” Atemu inquired, as he looked around. He ducked into the bathroom first, but it was clear. “Can you hear me?”
A soft moan was all Atemu needed to find him and he had to kick in the door as it had been locked and there was no key lying about. As soon as the door cracked and fell inside, Atemu made his way to Jounouchi’s side and blanched seeing his friend battered in such a way. While some slap and tickle, raised welts on a person’s willing body was one thing and turned him on slightly, this was not that. This was battery, plain and simple and a severe abuse of power. As much as Atemu wanted to take care of Jounouchi’s father, he knew that his friend had to come first.
Striding towards his friend, Atemu knelt down next to him, “Jounouchi, can you hear me?” Atemu asked softly, not wanting to scare him. When there was no answer, Atemu ran his fingers through the matted blond hair and received a flinch and a muffled cry.
Jounouchi was chained to the wall, the manacles on his wrists had chafed them raw, blood had run in rivulets down his forearms and crusted that way, making dark lines along his skin. There were bruises along his chest and around the ribs. Atemu glanced down at Jounouchi’s face where one of his eyes was swollen shut, discolored to black and blue. Upon closer inspection he realized that he would have to leave Jounouchi in order to find the key to the manacles, and sighed. Spotting Jounouchi’s messenger bag, and finding his cellular; he flipped it open, dialing 9-1-1, as he spoke to the operator, he continued to search for the keys.
“No, I do not know what happened, I came to check on my friend and he was manacled to the wall. He needs help.” Atemu said, as he gave the address and then hung up. Glancing around, he wanted to clean his friend as best he could and the only source of water in the room was a shallow bowl that was filled with bloody water. Picking up a small rag, he dipped it in the water only to wring it out and gently dab it on one of the wounds, and Jounouchi screamed. His voice was hoarse and filled with terror and pain, Atemu flinched and then realized why. The water in the bowl was filled with salt, infuriated; Atemu rose to his feet and stumbled out of the room only to throw up the contents of his stomach on the floor.
Turning back to Jounouchi, Atemu focused his powers and the manacles clicked releasing his friend. Reaching out, Atemu caught him in his arms and held him, not wanting to hurt him even as Jounouchi began to thrash and spoke incoherent words, while pushing futilely at Atemu trying to get away. “Shh, I won’t hurt you.” He whispered, stroking the blond locks that were matted with dried blood and it was only then that Atemu noticed the gash on Jounouchi’s forehead that looked like it was from a broken bottle.
When the paramedics arrived, they took control and hustled Jounouchi off to the hospital, but they did ask where Jounouchi’s father was at that moment and Atemu shook his head, indicating that he didn’t know and that the door was open when he arrived. They had no idea that Atemu had sealed Takahiro in the Shadow Realm for the moment. When asked if he wanted to join Jounouchi to the hospital Atemu nodded and left the apartment, knowing that Takahiro was in the Shadow Realm and not going anywhere for the nonce . . .
Atemu sighed as he watched the doors fly open and Seto Kaiba along with the man who had driven Jounouchi to the game shop walked in. “Kaiba. Mr. Eberhardt.” Atemu said as he greeted them both.
“How bad is he?”
Atemu shook his head, “the doctor hasn’t come out yet.” He said, “Seto, what are you doing here?”
“I came to see Jounouchi.”
“So, you finally realized what was in your heart.”
“Yes, but now, is it too late…” his voice trailed off as the trio sat down to wait. “Have you told Yuugi and the others?”
“Not yet. I was trying not to alarm my aibou until it was absolutely necessary.” Atemu replied, “however, when school lets out I shall inform him.”
Draco rose to his feet and started to pace as he glanced over at the youth with the three colors in his hair, “where is Jounouchi’s father?”
Atemu’s crimson eyes narrowed, “I will handle that.”
Seto blinked as he saw dark flames almost surrounding Atemu’s body. “Atemu, where is he?”
“He is where he will harm no one else. I am going to take care of it, for no one harms those my aibou loves and gets away with it.” Atemu finished as the doors opened and they could see someone being wheeled along in a bed to a private room.
“Dr. Kurosawa?” Draco asked, dropping the conversation. Akihiro walked over, her face grim. “What can you tell us?”
Seto rose and looked at the doctor, “is he stable?”
Akihiro Kurosawa dipped her head just a little bit, “he’s alive and stable for the moment. Multiple contusions on his entire body, his legs and his left ankle was twisted, we put it in a small cast to keep it straight for now.” She sighed, “His wrists were another story, those got infected, we have him on an antibiotic drip at the moment and he’s still under the anesthetic. We moved him to a private room…” She continued, as she noticed Seto was on his phone. “Excuse me, there are no cells…”
Seto turned and glared at her as he spoke into his phone, “Roland. Bring two men, that you trust down to Domino General, also, pick up Mokuba, Yuugi and his friends and bring them with you.”
“Can you ask him to pick up Arista as well?” Draco inquired.
Nodding, Seto finished his call, “and Roland. Go by intoxication and see if Mrs. Eberhardt will come along with you, we have bad news.” Closing the cell phone with a vicious snap, Seto pocketed it and looked to the doctor, “continue.”
Blinking, Akihiro shook her head, “anyway, he’s going to be out for a little longer. But if you want to sit with him…”
“I do.” Seto said, as he moved towards Dr. Kurosawa. She nodded and a nurse came over to take Seto to where Jounouchi was resting.
Draco watched him go, “I’m going to wait for the group to arrive, and explain things to them.” Dr. Kurosawa nodded and walked off, as Draco turned towards Atemu, “where is he?”
“I cannot tell you that.”
“Is he alive?”
Atemu’s crimson orbs narrowed dangerously, “for now.” He said coldly, as he headed to the door of the hospital, “I shall return, I need to make a call.”
~*~*~*~
Roland, Seto’s right hand at Kaiba Corp. made his way to the school where he found Yuugi looking anxiously at the door. “Are you ready to go?” he asked.
Yuugi looked up chewing on his lower lip, “where are we going?”
“I am not at liberty to tell you that.”
“Did Atemu find Jounouchi?”
“Yes.”
“Is he alright?”
“No.” Roland replied, as Yuugi let out a squeak and ran to the limo wrenching the door open where Mokuba was sitting. Roland made his way back to the limo, speaking to the driver as he climbed into the back seat, “to Intoxication.”
~*~*~*~
Arista paced the length of Intoxication, worried more now than she was before. A glance at the clock told her that school had let out already and there was no sign of Jounouchi, nor one of Draco who had left to go to a meeting. When a sleek black limo pulled up, and someone she had never seen before climbed out, he walked over to her and quietly explained who he was and why he was there. Blanching, Arista nodded, “let me do a few things then I shall accompany you.” She said softly, Roland returned to the limo as Arista made several calls and told no one anything but simply closed the club for the evening. Placing a large sign on the doorway, she practically ran to the limo.
“What can you tell me?” she inquired as she closed the door behind her.
“Not much, as I don’t know much. All I know is that Mr. Kaiba, my boss, called and asked me to bring two bodyguards to the hospital to stand guard. I’m assuming that he is in one piece.” Roland whispered to her, as he gestured to where Mokuba and Yuugi; who were sitting quietly, not wanting to say a word until they knew what was going on.
“Did you not tell them?”
“Mr. Kaiba told me not to, and I take orders from him.” Roland responded, adjusting his sunglasses for a moment.
Arista nodded slowly, “I understand, but that man will rue the day he messed with my family.”
Yuugi blinked, “are you close to Jounouchi?”
She blushed, “well, he has been living with me and my husband, Draco…ever since we found out…well,” her voice trailed off as Yuugi nodded knowingly. “He told you?” at Yuugi’s affirmation she continued, “since his father abused him. I have come to care for him, and I do not like it when people mess with the ones I care for.”
Yuugi bit his lower lip, “you sound like Atemu.”
“Who?”
“My boyfriend, he’s like that. And if I know him as well as I do, he’s got things well in hand.” Yuugi said as he and Mokuba shared a glance that spoke volumes. When they pulled into Domino General’s parking lot, the group spilled out of the car, and Arista ran to her husband. Yuugi looked around for Atemu who seemed to have vanished for the moment, while Mokuba went straight to the front desk to ask for Jounouchi.
~*~*~*~
Seto sighed as he sat in the chair next to the bed where Jounouchi was sleeping. He was a mess, the bruises were a sickly yellow and black color, covering most of his upper body. There were several monitors beeping softly but where normally the beeping of any computer brought Seto comfort, today it brought him misery for these machines were keeping the one he loved alive.
Taking Jounouchi’s hand quietly in his own, sapphire eyes filling with tears, he didn’t speak for he didn’t know what he wanted to say. So lost in his own worries and thoughts, Seto never heard the door open behind him. “Seto?”
Swallowing, he turned and saw Yuugi standing in the doorway. “Hey.” He said with a politeness that he usually didn’t show. But if he was going to get involved with Jounouchi, which was what he hoped, he would have to get along with the ‘geek squad’.
“Is Jou going to be alright?”
“He’ll live.” Seto replied, “is Roland here?”
“He’s outside, can I . . . can I sit with him awhile?”
“Yeah.” Seto replied as he vacated his seat and gave it over to Yuugi. When he went outside to speak to Roland, he saw that Arista was talking quietly with Draco, and then he realized that his arms were filled with his little brother, “Mokie, Jounouchi is going to be fine.”
“I know…Can I go in with Yuugi?”
“Yeah, go on, I’ll be out here, talking to Roland.” Seto replied as he watched Mokuba go into the room where Jounouchi and Yuugi were. “I want a guard on this door until Jounouchi is cleared to come home.” He continued, pinching the bridge of his nose to stave off a headache that was threatening. He then watched as Draco and Arista came over.
“Mr. Kaiba, thank you for caring for Jounouchi. With the guards and all.” Arista said, though inwardly she wanted a piece of the man who put Jounouchi here in the first place but no one knew where he was save for one.
“Of course.”
“My husband says that you want to buy the building, to keep the Health Inspector off our backs, said that he won’t mess with your company. Why is that?”
Seto cleared his throat, “my company is a multi million dollar enterprise, and I can handle one or two little inspections.”
“but why are you doing this now?”
“Because of Jounouchi, he is happy at that club and I have never seen him so happy before and I want to keep him that way and if the Inspector closes you down, well then he won’t be happy now will he?” Seto replied in a cool tone. “I love him, Mrs. Eberhardt. If you will excuse me, Roland, I will be back later.” As Seto walked out of the hospital with the three adults watching stunned that he had said quite that much, when he hit the outside air, he noticed that Atemu was standing over to the left of the doors.
Atemu’s eyes were narrowed and filled with fury, as he snapped into the phone, “I have a job for you.” With those words, Seto’s blood ran colder than ever before.
