So in Vain*
Opening his locker, Ryou wasn’t surprised to find a note there the first thing in the morning. He opened it quickly as it was a simple, notebook paper written affair.
Dearest,
Thank you for the letter. After reading it, I could stop smiling the whole day. You make me feel like dancing on air.
Yours Everlasting,
Ryou giggled and put the note in his pocket, switching out his books. He could just imagine his admirer now, coming up behind him and kissing him on the neck, telling him “Good Morning”. The boy sighed happily and drifted off to class, unaware he was being watched the entire time.
Dartz watched Ryou float off and couldn’t help but feel exactly the same. He stood here often, hoping the boy would turn and notice him, but he never did. Raphael nudged him in the ribs.
“D, let’s go. We got class.”
“If you say so. Isn’t he a vision?”
The beefed up blond shrugged. “Yeah I guess. Are you gonna let me copy today?”
“Not on your life.” Dartz brushed past him and down the hall to his class.

Ryou walked to lunch, talking to some classmates and laughing. They parted ways as they came to the cafeteria and Ryou went over to sit down at the usual table. He found Yugi rubbing Yami’s back as the boy stared forlornly into space.
The white haired boy sat down and looked at Yami. “What’s wrong Yami?”
The Pharaoh shook his head and hid his face in his folded arms, beginning to cry. Yugi shook his head and mouthed, “Amelda dumped him.”
Ryou waxed surprised and rubbed Yami’s back. “It’ll be alright. Would you like some potato chips?”
Yami shook his head and kept crying. Marik soon appeared with Bakura and Malik in tow. Bakura pointed to Yami.
“What the hell is that doing here. Tell that whore to –is he crying?”
Malik elbowed Marik in the gut as he started to laugh and wiggled over in between Yugi and Yami, rubbing the Pharaoh’s back.
“Poor Yami-chan! Want me to talk to Amelda for you?”
Yami shook his head and sat up a little, Malik hugging him. “He’s an ass. But you knew that right?”
Yami shook his head and cried into Malik’s shoulder. The Egyptian rubbed his back. “Poor Yami-chan…”
Marik frowned and Yugi poked him. “Poor Yami-chan!”
The blond sat down. “stupid malik…I thought I was his yami-chan…”
Yugi hugged him, pulling him into a kiss. “You can be my Yami-chan.” He gave the boy half of his sandwich and squeaked when the boy groped his ass.
Ryou ate his lunch, smiling as he thought about the letter he’d left in his locker. I wonder if he’ll get it? I wonder what he’ll say? He fingered the medallion around his neck. It binds our souls together!
Seto sat down after setting a bento box down in front of Bakura. He sat in his usual spot and glowered as he realized he was getting a view of Yami instead of Yugi or Ryou.
“What the hell is that doing here?” he said, pointing his chopsticks.
Bakura laughed. “That’s what I said!”
The CEO grinned and opened his lunch. Yami let Malik dry his tears with a damp napkin and laid his head on the boy’s shoulder.
Meanwhile, Malik was eating Yami’s lunch. “Yami, want a potato chip?”
The boy shook his head again and Malik ate the rest of the bag. Otogi came by and shook his head.
“You’re awful Babe. I brought you food today.”
The bottomless pit blond perked up. “Awesome!”
From across the cafeteria, Dartz watched Ryou’s back, frustrated that he couldn’t see the boy’s face. Amelda was also looking in that direction, watching Yami cry.
“Damn, all we did was screw a couple of times…”
Dartz cut his sandwich into quarters. “No, you went out on dates with him. It’s nearly February. You had a thing with him.”
The red head rolled his eyes. “Like you’re having a thing with mini psycho?”
The man took his butter knife and pointed it at Amelda’s neck. “You watch your mouth you filth. Remember who you’re speaking to.” One of Dartz’s eyes glimmered an odd amber for a second before they returned to their ice sapphire blue color.
The red head swallowed and leaned away. “Fine, geez. But you’d better be careful we all know Bakura doesn’t let anyone get close to him.”
“That’s why I’m sending him letters. If Ryou comes to me willingly, that Bakura will have no say.” He ate one of his sandwich quarters. Cucumbers and cream cheese was so delicious. “And in any case, Bakura is no longer a threat.”
Raphael was puzzled. “Why not?”
Dartz remained silent, glancing over at Seto Kaiba who was gesturing rudely in Otogi’s direction.
“Because everyone changes.”
When the boy finished his food, he got out his book and unfolded a note. He smiled as he read it.
Dearest Admirer,
I’ve been set free of my cage. I’ve escaped what was making me unhappy for the most part and can’t help but feel a great pressure lifted off my chest.
I love the necklace, I’ll wear it everyday. I put it on right after I read, your letter, sometime around midnight.
It was snowing outside when I went to bed. It’s so magical. I had a dream about being in front of the fireplace with you, who ever you truly are. It doesn’t really matter because I know you’re wonderful.
I don’t know when you’ll get this letter, but I have a sneaking suspicion I’ll find a new letter after lunch.
Yours Already,
Ryou

“I’ll be over to teach you all how to work everything.”
Malik whimpered. “When? I don’t know how to do laundry!”
Marik crossed his arms. “And…I could learn to use the oven or something.”
The white haired hikari laughed as he saw the angry look on Bakura’s face and patted his cheek, kissing the other. “I’ll be there around six, alright Yami?”
“…why don’t you want to come home?”
Ryou smiled gently. “I’ll teach you how to make all your favorite foods. I’ll come on the weekends alright?”
“Get away from me. I hate you.” Bakura walked away, disappearing down the sidewalk.
Ryou sighed and shook his head. “Why is he acting this way…”
Marik had his hand on Malik’s forehead, holding him back as the hikari tried to hug him. “Because he loves you. Just like I love this psycho!”
“Nyaaaa!” Malik reached for Marik. “Hey! Stop!”
The Egyptian moved his hand and Malik tackled him to the ground. “I LOVE YOU!”
People passed by shaking their heads and Marik tried to push the boy off him. “GET OFF GET OFF!”
Otogi came by and laughed, rubbing the back of his head. “Babe, come on, I thought you wanted to go to the mall?”
Instantly, the weight on Marik was gone and attached to Otogi’s arm. The Egyptian recovered, ruffling his golden spikes. “crazy bitch…”
Ryou giggled and waved to Yugi who was running over. He helped Marik off the ground.
“Marik, I have to finish my homework first if you want to…well, you know.”
The yami grinned lecherously. “You really think I’m going to comply with that?”
A car pulled up and Ryou waved goodbye. “I’ll see you guys later!”
Yugi watched Ryou go and sighed. “Marik…steal me a car.”
“Not my department.” He kissed Yugi and pulled him close. “Let’s find a bathroom…”
Yugi giggled and whispered in his ear. “Let’s just go behind the school!”
Marik grinned devilishly. “Have I told you I love you?”
**
Yami watched the game shop. “Watched” wasn’t really the appropriate word as the youth was really staring into the glass counter like it told fortunes. He didn’t notice the jingle of the door bell or hear boots approaching the counter. He also failed to hear someone come behind the counter until they spoke in his ear.
“What’s with all that crying?”
Yami perked up and looked to his left. Amelda stood there in his bomber jacket, looking annoyed.
“What Yami, do you want to talk or something?”
The Pharaoh looked at the ground. “Why’d you break up with me?”
“We were never together.”
“Don’t say that…” he whispered, starting to cry.
“You know how it works, you’ve done it before. Now I’m telling you to your face –”
Yami hugged Amelda and leaned his head on his shoulder. “You’re lying. You’re lying! I know how it works. I thought you said you were tired? I’m tired too Amelda…when you said it I know you weren’t lying.”
“I can’t love you Yami! Get off!”
“Make me!” the boy clung harder until Amelda hugged him back.
“I’m not your brother. I won’t die. I won’t disappear. Even if I do…I’ll just be back.”
“Hn.” Amelda ran his hands down Yami’s backside. “Do you have to watch the shop all afternoon?”
Yami shook his head and kissed the boy, pulling him toward the store room.
****
Ryou read the letter again, trying to be sure he read it right.
Dearest,
I’ve decided that I will face you and tell you how I feel, face to face.
It will be snowing tonight, but I’d like you to meet me at the bridge in the park at eight. I’ll be wearing a deep blue scarf.
Maybe if things go well, we could have a late dinner or just go get some cocoa.
Since there’s no way for you to reply until tomorrow, please meet me tonight?
Yours,
The boy’s heart beat sped up and he started jumping up and down on the large bed, shouting for joy.
His cell phone went off and he grabbed it. “Yes?”
“Ryou…are you still coming by to teach us stuff? We’re getting hungry…”
Ryou laughed. “Yeah. I’ll be there soon.”
The boy got redressed and made sure to wear his Orichalcos. He then rummaged through his things until he pulled out a hat. It was white and fluffy with little bunny ears on it. Bakura told him it made him look like a girl, but he really loved it.
He hopped down the hall to the elevator feeling giddy. “I’m a lil snow bunny!” He sang, waiting. When the elevator came he got on, smiling.
As he waited for the chauffer he couldn’t help but giggle spontaneously and turn back and forth.
I’m gonna meet him! Finally! The car pulled around and Ryou jumped inside.
“To the Bat Cave Alfred!”
The man laughed and Ryou giggled. “Just kidding. Please take me to the Ishtar residence.”
**
Ryou looked over Marik’s shoulder. “No…use a color closer to what the cloth looks like so no one can tell. How did you rip this shirt anyway?”
Marik sighed and put the shirt down. “I can’t do this!”
Ryou patted his back and picked up the shirt. “I’ll bring it by school..” He went to check on Malik, who was in the laundry room.
“Um…I separated all the clothes…”
Ryou looked around, a little surprised. Malik had separated all the clothes. By color and category. He giggled and sighed. “You didn’t have to go this far…” He put the jeans all in one pile and pilled the whites together. “You can put some colors together, but the reds go by themselves…” He took a sweater and shirt out of one of the piles.
“Malik, look here.” He showed the boy the tags. “This is dry clean only.”
“Oh…”
“Make sure you read the tags.”
The boy nodded and began putting things in the washer. Ryou left the room ad headed for the kitchen. Bakura was chopping vegetables.
“Did you put the meat in the oven like I told you?”
The boy grunted and Ryou sighed. “You mess up, you have to eat it.”
“I’m not messing up!” the boy slammed the knife down. “Either shut up or do it yourself!”
The white haired hikari came around the island and put the knife back in Bakura’s hands. “I’ll check. You can do this.”
He checked the pots and looked at the pork chops. “This is good. I’m teaching Malik how to make his own vegetarian meals so you guys won’t have problems.”
He stretched suddenly and opened the fridge. “It’s only been three days and you guys have an empty fridge!?”
“Marik.” Was all Bakura said, continuing to chop.
Ryou took out a sheet of paper and began writing. “When this is done, we’re all going on a trip to the grocery store. This is pathetic.”
“Hn.”
“Hn indeed. Stop being a brat.” Ryou smiled as Bakura chucked vegetables at him.

Dartz sat in the meeting, continuously glancing at the clock. He’d turned down the drinks everyone else was having for water. If he didn’t get out of here soon…
“So, which of these new companies do you think we should invest in this time Chairman?”
The boy came back to reality and looked at the spread sheets in front of him. “These two American companies look promising…and the three in China…” He circled them and shoved them forward. “How many does that make as of today?”
His assistant stood nearby, flipping through a pad. “Well sir…there are quite a number of them. Do you mean in America or Japan or –”
Dartz frowned. “What am I paying you for if you can’t give me an answer.”
The woman flushed. “Well over ten thousand Sir!”
The man smiled. “I’m going to be even richer very soon.” He watched the clock. It was eight fifty. Maybe if he hurried…
“Meeting adjourned! Any questions, fax them, email them, call them in. It’s getting late, we all have places to be.” Dartz stood and so did the other men.
As they filed out, seemingly slower than usual, Dartz glowered at his assistant. “Get the car.”
The woman ran off to find the chauffer and Dartz went into his private office.
Now to get dressed.
****
Ryou put the last box of macaroni and cheese away and saw the clock. It was nine fifteen.
He swore darkly and took out his cell phone, dialing quickly. “Hello?...Yes! Thank God!”
Bakura and the two Egyptian looked confused. Ryou ran over and kissed his yami. “I’m sorry, I have to go! I just remembered! I’ll be by in the morning to show you guys how –Oh, hell, I’ll just buy you all lunch.”
Ryou ran out, slamming the door. Bakura clenched his fists and stormed upstairs, slamming his door.
****
Dartz leaned over the bridge, looking at his watch.
Maybe he hasn’t read the letter yet…or maybe…he didn’t want to come…
It was nine thirty now and the snow was falling in thick sheets. Even if someone did show at the bridge now, Dartz’s figure would have been obscured by all the snow. The young investor sighed, doubt worming its way into his heart.
Where was Ryou?
**
Ryou continuously glanced at the clock, hoping that when he got there, his love would still be waiting. When they stopped at a traffic light, the boy cried out in frustration.
After a while, they got moving again and Ryou was nearly in tears. It was almost ten o’ clock.
**
Dartz clenched the bridge, biting his lip. This was a mistake. I knew I should have never done this!
He breathed in an out, refusing to let his emotions free. He shoved his hands in his pockets and started to walk away, bringing them out again to wipe at a stray tear running down his face.
**
When Ryou finally made it to the park it was five after ten. He ran towards the bridge, nearly slipping in ice patches several times.
He ran to the middle of the bridge and found no one.
“Hello!” he cried, desperate for anyone to appear.
No one came and no one answered. Ryou started to sob. It felt like his heart was in a vice. He leaned against the railing and watched the snow hit the water through blurry eyes.
He’ll think I don’t love him…he’ll think I don’t care! If I hadn’t got so caught up…
Ryou turned away and started to walk back to the car where the driver waited. He stopped when he saw a piece of paper sticking out of the snow. He picked it up and dusted the snow off. It had one thing written across the front in ink that was now blotted by the wetness: “For You”
“He was here…” the boy breathed feeling hope. “He was here…” Ryou ran back towards the car screaming like a loon. “HE WAS HERE!”
****
Dartz sat in front o his fire place, a mug of hot tea forgotten in his hand.
He wasn’t there…

Bakura and the two Egyptian looked confused. Ryou ran over and kissed his yami. “I’m sorry, I have to go! I just remembered! I’ll be by in the morning to show you guys how –Oh, hell, I’ll just buy you all lunch.”
Ryou ran out, slamming the door. Bakura clenched his fists and stormed upstairs, slamming his door.
