Chapter 7- Kaiba vs. Mouto
News spread fast, and a crowd had gathered the next day to witness the rematch of two most legendary names in Duel Monster history; Seto Kaiba vs. Yami Mouto. The stands around the dueling field were full up when Yami arrived, followed by Yugi, Ryou, Bakura, Malik and Marik. Kaiba entered through the other side of the arena, Mokuba, Otogi, Tristan and Joey behind him, hoping for Kaiba to come out victorious. Ryou swallowed, and looked at Bakura.
“Ryou?” He asked, noting the strange, almost mournful look on his other’s face. Yami, and the others looked at Ryou as well. He was trembling slightly.
“Gomen,” he muttered, then turned, and walked away from them.
“Ryou?!” Bakura called, shocked, and confused. Ryou walked over, and stopped in front of Kaiba.
“Take him down, Seto. For everyone’s sake, take him down.” Ryou said, in a shaky voice.
“I’ll try, Ryou.” Kaiba said.
“Here.” Ryou said, pulling a card from his pocket. “This may help.” Kaiba looked down, and smiled. He took the card.
“Thanks, Ryou.” He said, then took his place on the platform, and was lifted to the dueling deck. Yami was doing the same on the other side of the arena.
//What the hell are you doing?!?// Bakura snapped at Ryou.
/I’m supporting who I think should win./ Ryou said, and closed off the link.
“You all right, Ryou?” Joey asked, quietly.
“H-hai……”
“Are they mad at you?” Tristan muttered.
“They feel like I betrayed them. Maybe I did. But it’s for their own good, and mine.” Ryou said.
“Don’t worry.” Otogi said.
“Yeah! Seto will win!” Mokuba said. 2000 life points flashed up, and Kaiba and Yami drew their hands. Kaiba smiled. Two Blue Eyes on his first draw. Not bad. But Yami was to go first.
“I’ll play the Celtic Guardian, in Attack mode! And I’ll lay two cards face down.” Yami said, then looked expectantly at Kaiba. He sighed, and drew a card.
“I play La Jinn, and attack your Guardian!” Kaiba called. Yami frowned as his life points fell to 1600. He drew a card.
“Curse of Dragon! Attack La Jinn!” Kaiba’s life points fell to 1800. Kaiba frowned, then shrugged, drawing a card.
“Blue Eyes White Dragon!” He called, and the monster erupted from the filed. “Attack!” Yami smirked.
“I activate Mirror Force, deflecting your attack right back at you, destroying your beast!” Yami called, smugly. Kaiba frowned, but inwardly smirked. That got rid of the Mirror Force, and he had another Blue Eyes in his hand. “and it’s my turn.” That arrogant tone in Yami’s voice was making Kaiba sick. “Curse of Dragon! Attack his life points!” Kaiba flipped over a card.
“Negate Attack!” He called, and Yami’s eyebrow twitched. It was Kaiba’s turn.
“I play the Blue Eyes White Dragon!” He called. “Attack Curse of Dragon!” Yami’s life points fell to 600, while Kaiba remained 1800. “Your move, Yami.”
“I’ll play Dark Hole!” Kaiba cursed inwardly. “then, I play Kuriboh, in defense mode, with the Multiply Magic Card!”
“Shimatte!” Kaiba snarled.
“And I end my turn.” Yami gloated. Kaiba drew a card, and smirked. ‘Maybe this Heart of the Cards stuff really does work.’
“I play Dark Hole!” The Kuriboh disappeared, much to Kaiba’s relief. “And I play Saggi, the Dark Clown, in defense mode. Your move.” Yami smirked.
“I play the Dark Magician! And Stop Defense! Attack Saggi!” Kaiba’s life points fell to 300.
“Oh, no…” Ryou muttered. Kaiba swallowed, and drew a card. Another Negate Attack. He played it face down, and ended his turn. Yami frowned. Kaiba had no monsters, but he had another card. Yami wasn’t about to walk into a trap.
“I play Silver Fang, in attack mode! Attack!” Kaiba flipped over Negate Attack. Yami sighed, half in relief, half in annoyance. Kaiba frowned. He had no monsters in his hand. No magic or trap cards that could save him. He had 300 life points, while Yami had 600, and two monsters. Everything was riding on the next card.
“C’mon, Seto….” Mokuba muttered. “If there were ever a time to believe in the heart of the cards, this is it!” Kaiba swallowed, closed his eyes, and drew. Slowly, he opened his eyes, and stared at the card fate had dealt him. He looked up at Yami.
“You’ve always told me to trust in the heart of the cards. I finally took your advice. And you’re right. It paid off.” He slammed a card down on the field, in a magic slot. A being took shape. Tall, in long robes, two wings spread behind it, one black, jagged and leathery, one white, soft, and feathery. The Change of Heart looked up. “This duel is mine. Thanks to the Heart of the Cards, and Ryou.” Ryou blushed, and avoided the glares of the three yamis and his fellow hikaris. “Now, Change of Heart! Go! Take control of the Dark Magician, and attack Silver Fang!” The Change of heart leapt forwards, into the Dark Magician, then whirled, and struck Silver Fang with her scepter. The wolf howled, and vanished from the field. Yami’s Life points fell to 0. The dueling platform brought Yami and Kaiba to the ground. Yami looked stunned. He stepped off of the platform, and fell to his knees. Yugi knelt next to him.
“I’m sorry…” Yami whimpered, to Bakura, Malik and Marik. Kaiba, Mokuba, Joey, Tristan, Otogi and Ryou approached them. Kaiba knelt next to Yami.
“Are you all right?” He asked, gently.
“I don’t understand. How could I lose?” He whispered, brokenly.
“’Cause Seto trusted in the heart of the cards; like ya always told ‘im to!” Joey said.
“But, so did I!” Yami protested. “I’ve always placed my faith in the heart of the cards!” Ryou smiled, slightly.
“Maybe the heart of the cards knew that this time, losing was in your best interest, no matter how much you deny it.” Ryou said. Yami looked up at Ryou.
”Maybe.” Yami breathed.
“Now,” Kaiba said. “Will you let me help you?” Yami looked up and Marik, and Malik, then Bakura, and Ryou, who looked hopeful. Then he looked at his own hikari. Kaiba was right. Yugi was better than this. He deserved better than this. And so did the others.
“Yes. We will accept your help. Gratefully. Thank you, Seto.” Yami said. Seto stood, offering Yami his hand. Yami took it, and let Kaiba pull him to his feet.
“I have a team fixing up the Game Shop as we speak, Yami. You’ll be able to return by tonight. I’ve also set aside boxes in the warehouses to be delivered tomorrow morning. By tomorrow after noon, you can be back in business. But give it time before you do re-open. You and Yugi have a lot of things to come to grips with. Ryou, Bakura, Malik, Marik, I’ll try to find a place for you all to stay. In the meantime, my home is open to you.”
“Seto…” Ryou gasped. “Arigato.” Malik swallowed, and blinked away tears, overwhelmed. Marik looked at the floor, not allowing emotion to show on his face. Yugi looked at Kaiba.
“Domo arigato gozaimasu…” He said. Kaiba nodded, and smiled. Ryou looked at Bakura, who took him in his arms.
“Let’s go home, tenshi.” Bakura said. “Let’s go home, and pack up.” Ryou stared at Bakura, then, his face split into a big smile, and he hugged his dark tightly. Marik looked at Malik, who gave him a pleading look anyway. Marik sighed, and shrugged.
“Ahh, I didn’t tell you, but we were about to get evicted anyway…” Malik grinned, and leapt into his yami’s arms. Yami sighed, and looked at Yugi.
“Maybe it is time we went home.” He said. Yugi smiled slightly, and nodded. “We’ll go to the club tonight, and tell him we quit.” Yugi’s smile widened. Kaiba smiled.
“Then go do it. Meet at the Game shop tomorrow at noon.”
