Chapter 7: Diagnosis
Yugi lie on the bed, eyes open and very drained of his energy. His eyelids were only partially open as his limbs stayed limp. After a vicious debate with himself, he brutally lost and moved his legs so they hung off the side of the bed as his back lifted to support the rest of his body. His head hung low. He jumped off, though the pain through his feet and legs showed their obvious disapproval, and painfully made his way to his clothes pile. He regrettably slipped his shirt over his head and his bottoms over his legs and hips.
‘By Ra…my stomach hurts. Maybe I ate some bad food or something…’
Yugi walked over to the other side of the room in hopes that the movement would ease his body’s discomfort.
He staggered to the balcony as another wave of tenderness hit his belly and he doubled over to his knees. He slipped his head through the bars under the railing and vomited over the side. After a another gag reflex, more of the unwanted fluid, along with some other solid object that will not be mentioned, flew over the side and hit the ground with a ‘splash’.
After a coughing fit, he leaned back and sat on his end whipping his mouth.
‘I hope no one was down there,’ he thought disappointingly. ‘But…why am I throwing up? I mean…the food couldn’t have been that bad…could it?’
“Yugi?”
He abruptly turned to see a half clothed Yami walking up to him, worry in his eyes and face.
“Yugi, are you alright? What’s wrong?”
“Oh…um…”
‘Should I tell him? I don’t want him to worry…but he already is worried so I don’t really see a point in hiding it.’
“It’s nothing too much. I just threw up. No big deal…”
“No big…Yugi, that can be a big deal. I’m calling for the healer.”
“No, wait!”
Yami turned back around.
“Really. It’s nothing bad. I just have a small stomach bug.”
“Are you sure?”
Yugi smiled and nodded.
“Mm-hm. Nothing to worry about.”
Yami sighed.
“Alright.”
He picked up a glass that he had beside the cot and took it to Yugi who thankfully drank the acid taste away.
Yami knelt beside him as he grasped him in a hug.
“I just hate to see you in pain.”
Yugi smiled tenderly as he backed from the hold and passionately kissed his Pharaoh.
“Don’t worry. I’m fine. Nothing to worry about.”
Yami smiled back.
“If you’re sure.”
**
Several days passed in this fashion. Yugi vomited daily sometimes more than once. Yami, to say the least, was very worried for his lover and tried to persuade him to go to a healer but Yugi persisted that he was fine. By this point, Yugi himself was starting to worry. So he finally caved and went with Yami’s pleas to see a medicine man, or should I say…woman.
“Of course, Milord. It’s no trouble at all. Just sit right here and we’ll get started,” Isis said as she momentarily left the room.
Yami nodded and led Yugi to a chair.
For support, Yami asked Seto to come with them…also because healers tended to use big word that the Pharaoh himself did not know.
The woman came back in.
“So, what has been happening?” she asked as she looked into Yugi’s eyes.
“He’s been throwing up daily for almost a week, now and he’s been very tired and extremely hungry…for the strangest foods…”
Seto peered at his cousin.
“Strange food?”
“Fish dipped in asparagus oil…” Yami whispered. “And that’s just one of them.”
Seto shivered at the thought of the taste.
“Hmm…” Isis took Yugi’s wrist in her hands as she felt for his pulse.
“Well, his pulse seems a bit fast. Could you sit up for me, please?”
Yugi sat up straight as Isis applied pressure to his abdomen.
“Ahh!” he hissed as he hunched back over.
“Oh. Sorry. That can’t be too good.”
Yami’s stomach fell.
“What?”
“I am going to have to execute some further trials.”
“Huh?”
“She wants to try some other things to see if she can find what’s wrong with him,” Seto explained.
“Oh…” Yami said as he looked at the floor in anxiousness.
Isis came back with some tools that made Yami feel uneasy.
“If you wouldn’t mind, you’re highnesses, I think it would be best if you departed from the room.”
“Leave?” Yami asked.
Isis nodded.
“No. I refuse to leave Yugi here alone with some…”
“Yami…”
The Pharaoh stopped mid-sentence and looked at Yugi who was smiling.
“Don’t worry. I’ll be fine.”
He actually didn’t want Yami to leave. He was scared and worried himself about the outcome of the tests.
Yami sighed heavily. He didn’t want to leave his little light in his greatest time of need but…if it was best…
Yami nodded and was escorted from the room by Seto.
**
Yami paced the walkway in front of the door that trapped Yugi and Isis. Seto leaned against the wall.
“What in Ra’s name is taking so long?” Yami practically demanded.
“Be patient,” Seto advised. “These things don’t pass quickly.”
“Obviously.”
Yami stopped pacing and sat next to his cousin.
“I…I’m just so worried about him. The first time he finally feels comfortable with me…the first time he lets me touch him…this happens? It doesn’t seem right, nor does it seem fair. Do the gods above curse the happiness that I have finally found after a life long search?” Yami sighed. “I just…I don’t want him to be in pain. It’s odd but for some reason, when he feels pain…he shares it with me somehow, not that I’m complaining, mind you. It’s actually comforting knowing that we have bonded so tightly.”
Seto looked over at the other man to see that tears brimmed his crimson eyes; once hard and lonely, now soft and in pain. He felt for his beloved cousin as he listened intently.
Yami’s tears, however, never made it to his voice.
“I just want to be there for him. Protect him for all I’m worth. Hold him when everyone else shuns him. Laugh when he laughs, smiles when he smiles. I just want to love him…forever.”
Yami lowered his head into his knees.
Seto watched as Yami sat quietly.
‘Pain? Protect? Love? Forever? Can one man really feel all of these at once? He must truly care for this boy and will go to great lengths for him…’
A mental image of a tall blonde ran across his closed eyes.
“I know that feeling, cousin,” Seto said as he placed a hand on Yami’s back for comfort. “Trust me, it will only grow with the time you spend with him.”
Yami looked Seto in the eyes for a few seconds, then back at the ground in thought.
The door opened and Isis came through, smiling.
Yami and Seto both stood.
“Well? What is it? Is he alright?!” Yami asked franticly.
“Yes, yes. Young Master Yugi is just fine. However, his condition intrigues me.”
“Is that good?...or…bad?” Yami asked unsteadily.
“I am not quite sure, Milord. Let me converse with my fellow colleagues and I will return curtly. Until then, you may see him.”
And with that, she left.
Yami sighed and went into the examination room where Yugi sat on the cot with his backside propped up against the back wall and sheets covering his legs.
The Pharaoh and High Priest walked up to him as Yami took Yugi’s hand in his own.
“Hi, Yami,” Yugi smiled.
Yami smiled back.
“How are you feeling?”
Yugi shrugged. “Alright, I suppose. No different then when we first got here.”
“Has she told you anything about your…condition?” Yami asked, trying to use his words wisely.
Yugi shook his head. “I was hoping she told you.”
“Unfortunately no. She said that she had to go talk to some other doctors and get another opinion, I suppose.”
They waited for another while until Isis re-entered the room.
Yami stood, his hand still clutched in Yugi’s, as Seto relived his dependence from the wall as he placed his full weight on both feet.
“Well, my fellow healers and I have agreed on the final diagnosis.”
The silence was killing them until…
“Yugi…is pregnant.”
There eyes widened to saucers as this news.
“WHAT?!” Yami screamed.
“That’s preposterous! It’s impossible! I mean…he’s a man for Ra’s sake!!!”
Isis put up a finger to correct her Pharaoh.
“Not ‘probable’. It is obviously possible for it is so. How this fact is true, I can not say. It is clearly the work of the gods.”
Yugi’s breath slowed as he peered down at his stomach.
‘I’m………pregnant?’
Yami took several steps back as he reached out his hand to a table nearby to stabilize himself breathing harshly.
‘By Ra…Yugi…Yugi is…pregnant?! How can this possibly be?!! It makes no humanly sense what so ever!!’
Seto watched all the different reactions from the other occupants in the room before he stared down at the ground in deep thought.
‘Yami has a point: Yugi is a man. But he also did test positive on all the pregnancy tests.’ He sighed. ‘The gods sure do like to confuse us mortals…’
He then opened his eyes as a thought struck him.
The Gods…
‘The vision!’ he screamed to himself.
‘The vision I had a while ago…the two beings and then the shorter holding a…BABY!!’
His face obviously showed his extreme surprise as he started sweating.
“Lord Kaiba? Lord Kaiba, are you alright?”
Seto was shocked out of his contemplations as he peered to his caller, Isis.
“Lord Kaiba, maybe you should sit down for a while.”
“No. Uh...I’ll be fine. I just…need some time to think. Please excuse me.”
And with that, he left in a hurry.
“Oh well. Wonder what that was about.”
Isis shrugged and looked back over at the two lovers. Yami was on his knees next to Yugi’s bed, their hands tightly intertwined symbolizing their undying passion they feel for the other.
Isis smiled as she slyly, and quietly, made her way out of the room and closed the door.
**
Seto sat in his quarters as he took quick cursory notes on his dream and substituting the general words such as ‘Shadows’ or ‘figures’ with ‘Yami, and ‘Yugi’ and other such ideas. It took the rest of the night to finally decipher the entire code of his revelations.
“By gods…then it is true…”
He looked down at one of the many drawings he had created to help him finish the puzzle.
“The prophecy is real.”
**
Yami and Yugi lie on their bed that night, sniggled up tight with each other. Yugi was sound asleep with one of Yami’s arms wrapped around his waist.
Yami propped himself up on his other arm as he peered at is perfect angel.
To think…him and Yugi: parents! And to think that since he boasted a male lover he would never sire an heir. But it seemed the fates had another plan in mind.
Yami smiled. He leaned down and kissed Yugi’s temple. The young one’s lips curved into a smile as he cuddled closer into the warmth.
Yami placed his hand flat of Yugi’s stomach.
‘This…couldn’t get any more perfect,’ he thought happily to himself.
**
The next day, Yami and Yugi were enjoying a stroll when a guard came up and informed them that the High Priest Seto Kaiba had wished to have an audience with him in the main temple, immediately.
“Seto?” Yami asked the large room.
He and Yugi walked into the area deeper and deeper.
“I am glad that you could make it on such short notice.”
Seto hastily moved from inside one of the passageways that lead to a supply room in the back of the place of worship.
“I have some news for you both.”
“Oh?” Yami inquired. “What about?”
“It is about the new predicament that is on every mouth from here to the land of the Greeks.”
Yugi blinked.
“Are you talking about Yami’s and my…”
“Yes, I am. You see, it is not just pure luck or graciousness of the gods…but fate herself that has brought this about.”
“What are you saying?” Yami asked.
Seto grabbed one of the many manuscripts from a pile on a nearby jar and brought it to Yugi and Yami. He unrolled it and faced it toward the others.
“Seto, what is this?” Yugi asked as he took a better look at the drawings.
“It is a vision I received from the gods during my morning prayer. You see, there is an ancient legend, so ancient, that the tale is no longer told. Many priests thought it untrue but it seems that you have proved them wrong.
‘The first royal born child of the matching sexes shall be the beginning of a great ruler of a great land.’
That child is now slumbering in your body.”
He intently looked at Yugi.
He gasped “Then…then you’re saying that… our child is going to be…be a…”
“…a child of the gods?” Yami finished.
He placed the manuscript down on a table so they all could peer at its contents.
“I saw the both of you holding each other symbolizing…well, you know…”
Yami and Yugi blushed crazily.
“That is the only part of the visions I can correctly interpret at this point in time. The other drawings could mean any number of things. For example, the next was one of the shadows on the ground, unmoving. That could mean, may the gods forbid, something might happen to Yami, Yugi, or the baby. One of those could lead the next image, one of the figures holding an infant, as another generation making true the prophecy. Next are the shadows standing before a supreme being as one comes to a great revelation-again, this could mean any number of things. And last, three shadows together.”
Yami and Yugi shared a worried glance.
“The gods work in mysterious ways, my friends. Do not think that this fate is set in stone for the mist of change is always among us.”
