Chapter 6

Yugi finally cried himself to sleep and the sea snake mermaid known as Miho gently folded the larger leaves of seaweed over him to keep him warm. Exhausted from watching the poor boy’s emotional turmoil and unable to quell his pain, she quietly slipped through a secret door to next room and her own quarters, having been put in charge of the young merman’s care.

Yugi snuggled into his soft bed, not wanting to leave it despite the weak rays of the morning sun beginning to seep through the curtains. ‘Wait, soft?’ Yugi thought with a start, waking fully. He terrified eyes took in the familiar, yet unfamiliar smooth amethyst coral walls, multicolored crushed shell floor and soft bed made of seaweed. Darting out of the bed like it was made of poisonous snakes, realization finally crept into his terrified mind as he somehow recognized his own amethyst tail most of all. He remembered the events of the day before, all the wonderful, frightening, and frustrating moments pouring into him at once, making him sink to the floor, trembling in confusion. At that moment, Jono appeared through the rows of strings beaded with small intact shells. The sharkman gasped at the state of his friend, rushing over and holding him in a protective, friendly embrace.
The poor merman was so frightened, he didn’t know what to think or do. He buried his face into the comforting shoulder before him, crying: he wanted Atemu to be with him, he wanted his Yami. Jono was shocked to hear Yugi call Atemu by his human name, one that had turned into a pet name for the prince that only Yugi was allowed to use if the merman should not be in human form. Jono was pleasantly surprised that Yugi had somehow retained that memory: It would help out a lot in the long run. Jono rubbed Yugi’s back gently, saying, “Don’t worry, Atemu is waiting for you down in the dining hall. Your Yami’s still there for you.”
Yugi gasped at those words. Jono realized with horror that Yugi hadn’t noticed he had used that name before. However, the sharkman was more concerned about the fact that Yugi was suddenly unconscious.

~Dream Memory Sequence~
“Heba,” spoke a welcoming baritone voice. Yugi turned around to see a lighter skinned Atemu behind him. The princely merman looked wracked with pain and worry. “Heba, I’m sorry, but we have to trust the Sea Sage’s advice. He’s never been wrong before.”
“No!” Yugi found himself crying. “I’ll never let that old kook make me forget! I don’t care if you say it’s for the best, I know it’s not! It can’t be...”
~End Dream Memory Sequence~ (A/N: God, that was uncharacteristically mushy for me. I think I’m going soft. *goes to train with her sword* )
Yugi woke up on a soft bed made of crimson seaweed. He sat up, his head much clearer than it had been in awhile. He had remembered something, a REAL memory, not just a feeling or recognition or fleeting moment. A REAL exchange between him and Atemu. Yugi looked at his amethyst tail. Atemu had called him Heba. Somehow Yugi knew that was his birthname, and that Yugi was his name as a human. Atemu was the prince’s birthname, and Yami was what he used as a human. But Yami had become a pet name for the prince that was reserved only for Yugi’s use. Yugi smiled. He had remembered something. An important connection. A promise he had made to never, ever allow himself to forget anything.
