Project: Destiny
Chapter Six
by Ravenx

Monday afternoon finds Seto Kaiba once again sitting at his desk in the back of class, a black and silver pen held loosely over an open folder. His dark blue eyes travel from the papers in front of him to the raven-haired girl in the row ahead of him who plops her books down loudly on her desk before laughing at something her friend next to her says, the two sit down to chat quietly. The blue eyes of the brunette moves over the small brown haired girl in the middle of the room, the same thick book lying on her desk as she reads from it, her marker near the end of the novel.

Seto glances to the set of desks near the windows where his dinner companions from Saturday night usually occupy. The pale blonde and white haired boys sit facing each other, their voices to low for the brunette to hear their conversation, they look over to the door as the small tri-colored haired duelist enters the room and sits in one of the seats at the desk behind them, the three of them begin chatting excitedly.

The old, gray haired teacher enters the room only seconds before the bell chimes causing Seto to frown at the empty seat next to Yugi before closing his work files and putting them in his briefcase only to pull out his textbook and notepad.

“Where’s Joey?” Malik whispers to the white haired boy next to him.

“I don’t know.” Ryou starts to open his book.

“Today we will be working in groups of five. There isn’t a lecture today just some worksheets you will all have to turn in at the end of class. I know group work means you’ll have to talk to each other but try to keep it down to a reasonable level, okay?” The man waits for the students to nod quietly before continuing. “Good. You can choose your groups but remember five only. Now, Marisa would you mind handing out the worksheets to every one?” A short, blonde girl on the end of the first row happily moves to take the sheets. “Everyone gets one of each. There are three in total and I want one from every person not just one from every group. The assignment is from Chapter 15 starting on page 351. Okay, everyone team up.” The man sits at his desk taking out a stack of ungraded papers.

“Joey was in his morning class with me.” Yugi tells the other two boys as they turn their chairs to his desk.

“He was in P.E. after lunch.” Malik says.

“Thank you.” Ryou smiles sweetly at Marisa as she gives them five copies of the three papers. “Do you think he is alright?” He asks as the blonde girl moves to another table.

“I don’t know.” Yugi worriedly looks toward the door.

“Mr. Kaiba, I don’t want people working alone. Please find a group.” The teacher calls toward the back of class where the brunette sits by himself.

Sighing, Seto picks up his briefcase and book and gets up, moving through the rows of groups that already have five people in them.

“You can be in our group, Kaiba.” Ryou smiles up at the tall boy as he starts to pass them.

“Yep, so far we only have three. Besides everyone else has five.” Malik observes as he looks around the room.

“Fine.” The tall brunette sits in Joey’s usual seat. “Where’s the inu?”

“We don’t know. You didn’t see him before class, did you?” Yugi ask.

“No.” Seto opens his book to page 351.

“Well, Mr. Wheeler, its nice of you to join us today.” The teacher says as he looks up from his papers.

“Sorry, sir.” The sandy blonde quickly shuts the door behind him and moves toward his desk, stopping at seeing the brunette sitting in his seat. “What are you doing, Kaiba?”

“We have to work to in groups, Joey. We invited Kaiba to join us.” Yugi smiles at his friend.

“Where am I supposed to sit?”

“Get another chair, inu.” Seto smirks.

“Don’t call me a dog.” Joey hisses.

“Joey, sit down and don’t yell.” Ryou reaches out to pull a chair from another empty desk over to their desk.

“Sorry, guys.” Joey sighs as he sits down and pulls out his book.

“Where were you?” Yugi asks.

“I had to stay after to talk to my Bio teacher.”

“About what?” Ryou reads over the papers in front of him.

“About my paper that’s due tomorrow.”

“Let me guess, you haven’t written it yet.” Seto smirks as he starts flipping through his textbook.

“For your information I have.” The sandy blonde sticks his tongue out at the brunette.

“Then what’s the problem?” Malik taps his pen on the desk.

“I need a computer to type it up. He’ll count off big time if its handed in hand written and I need the Internet to get some graphs and pictures and all.”

“You can go to the library after school.” Yugi suggests.

“Can’t. The library closes at five today for some award benefit or something and I have detention until four-thirty.”

“Can’t you use the computers in the library here at school?” Ryou asks.

“Nope. Don’t have anytime. My detention is in gym putting things up and cleaning. By the time I’m done the library will be locked.” Joey sighs.

“I’d let you use Isis’s computer but she doesn’t even let me use it.” Malik rolls his eyes.

“And I always just go to the library.” Ryou looks sadly at the sandy blonde.

“Me too.” Yugi nods his head. “What about tomorrow morning? Can’t you get to the library here during lunch?”

“Bad idea.” Ryou says. “The library at lunch time is filled with people waiting on the computers.”

“You can use mine.” Seto speaks up.

“Excuse me?” Joey stares, opened mouth at the CEO next to him.

“You can use my computer.”

“I can borrow your laptop for the night?”

“I don’t think so. I wouldn’t trust you with my laptop. You can come to my house tonight to use it.” Seto jots down an answer to one of the question on his paper.

“That’s very nice of you, Kaiba.” Yugi smiles at the boy next to him.

“I just don’t want to waste anymore time on this matter. We have work to do here before class is over.”

“Of course.” Ryou ducks his head to hide his large grin as they begin to get to work on the assignment.

-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-

The sandy blonde trudges down the deserted hallway of school, thin lockers run down both walls only having voids where doors are, their scratched up pale green surfaces reflecting the long lights running along the ceiling. Joey’s sneaker clad feet quietly move over the ugly white and brown speckled floor, his honey eyes stare ahead at the double metal doors that lead out of the school, sunlight flowing in through the skinny windows on each one.

Joey sighs in relief as he pushes the heavy doors open and steps out into the cool air, his hand tightens on his Biology textbook and binder as he hops down the stairs and starts walking to the sidewalk. His white school shirt hangs loosely on him as his navy jacket blows out behind him slightly in the nice breeze.

Suddenly a long, stretch limo pulls up beside him on the street, the sun shining off the smooth black vehicle. A tall man with short brown hair steps out of the driver’s side door, his crisp black suit hanging loosely on his slim body, his dark brown eyes watching Joey as he moves around the front of the limo toward the passenger door near the sandy blonde.

“Mr. Wheeler, sir, I have been instructed to take you to Mr. Kaiba’s residence.” The man’s voice is slightly rough, his thin lips working up into a smile as he opens the door for the youth.

“Oh…uh…I can walk.” Joey stumbles over his words.

“Mr. Kaiba told me specifically to pick you up and take you to his home.”

“Oh, well. Okay.” Joey steps from the curb into the limo.

As the door closes beside the sandy blonde, his honey eyes roam over the interior of the limo, the black leather moves gently under him as he slides closer to the center of the long seat. Another seat sits in front of him with a long black window dividing off the diver’s section of the car, a small round cabinet sticks out of the floor board in between the two seats with a longer row of cabinets on the right side of the car running from the door to the other seat. Joey’s eyes look in wonder at the small buttons above his head, one long finger slowly sneaking up toward one.

“There are sodas in the top of the center cabinet, Mr. Wheeler.” A voice suddenly floats back to the sandy blonde causing his to yelp slightly and lower his finger before it touches the small black button. “If you need anything just hit the red button on the door to speak with me.”

“Okay. Thank you.” Joey presses the red button before laying his books down beside him and leaning toward the center cabinet.

Pressing a long button on the edge of the cabinet he watches as the center of the cabinet raises up slightly to reveal several cans of soda nestled in small piece of ice. Taking one out, Joey pushes the button again and watches the center lower again before leaning back in the seat.

“Must be for Mokuba. I don’t think Seto drinks soda.” Joey quietly chuckles to himself.

As he sips on the cool, carbonated drink his eyes wonder out the tinted window to watch the scenery fly past him. Kids walk in groups on the sidewalk, laughing and jumping around, playfully pushing their friends before running away only to be chased seconds later. Cars take up parking places on the side of the street while others ride by the black limo.

Joey’s honey eyes stare watch as the tall buildings of the city come and go, bright green landscape taking its place as they near the young CEO’s home. The sandy blonde’s mind wonders back to the blind date with the taller brunette Saturday night, a small smile forming on his lips as he remembers the warm breathe ghosting over his cheek shortly after Seto arrived. Even the words said that would normally upset him actually made him tingle inside, his heart speeding up slightly as he tried to play it off as anger.

A soft moan escapes his lips as his thoughts move forward to the end of the evening where he had volunteered to walk to other teen out, his hand moves to caress his right cheek where the lips of the brunette flutter across briefly. A promise of having a more private date later rings in Joey’s head before he jumps slightly as the door is opened by the driver, his eyes looking around to find them stopped in front of a set of stone stairs.

“Thanks.” Joey smiles at the driver as he grabs his books and starts moving up the stairs. “Is Kaiba going to meet me at the door or am I suppose to…” The sandy blonde turns at the top of the stairs to see the limo driving back down the driveway. “Never mind.”

Honey colored eyes stair at the large white mansion in front of him, his sneakers taking him the remaining feet to the giant black, double doors, his hand raising to hit the brass knocker in the shape of a dragons head against the wood. His head turns around to look at the perfectly mowed grass, the beautiful yellow and red flowers around the front of the house.

The door quickly opens to reveal a short, long black haired boy with bright violet eyes smiling widely, his black and navy horizontally striped, long sleeved shirt hangs over his arms, the dark blue jeans he wears covering his small bare feet.

“Hey, Joey!” Mokuba practically jumps at the taller boy.

“Hey, Mokuba. Where’s your brother?” Joey smiles as he steps through the door and into the large entranceway to take his shoes off.

“He had to work late.” The smaller boy takes hold of Joey’s hand and pulls the older boy up the grand staircase, his socked feet padding quickly over the dark wood floors and steps.

“Well, he said I could come over to use his…”

“His computer. Yeah, I know. He called me after school to tell me you were going to come over to use his laptop.”

“Uh, Mokuba, where are we going?” Joey’s honey eyes look around the cream colored walls of a long hallway as they turn to the left at the top of the stairs, the boy still pulling him.

“To Seto’s room.”

“I don’t know if that’s a good idea.” Joey shakes his head, his sandy blonde hair falling in his eyes.

“Why not? His laptop is in his room and he has it already hooked up to his printer.” The raven-haired boy stops two large double doors painted the same cream color as the walls. “This is Seto’s room.” He lets go of Joey’s hand to open one of the doors, sliding in with the sandy blonde in tow.

Joey’s mouth drops open as he enters the large room, a long row of windows across from the doors cast bright light onto the navy walls and plush white carpet that slides through Joey’s toes. A large four poster bed of dark cherry wood sits to the right of the doors with a bedside table on each side of matching wood, a white comforter drapes over the bed.

Honey eyes moving to the left side of the room, Joey finds a small sitting area with a long pure white sofa facing away from the bed and overstuffed navy chair looking toward the windows, a low glass coffee table sits in front of the sofa with neat piles of magazines on top. Behind the navy chair, against the wall by the door is a dark cherry wood desk with a leather chair pushed under it, a closed silver, laptop lays on top, cables moving out the back of it. Stacks of papers are laying on the desk next to a black table lamp and several other little desk items, the drawers under the top closed tightly.

On the wall in front of the sofa is a large flat screen television hanging over a small dark wooden cabinet, its doors shut with the designs of dragons craved into the front. Mokuba moves over to the large desk to open the laptop and boot it up, he turns with a giggle toward the older boy.

“Are you alright, Joey?”

“Huh…oh…yeah….just looking around…this is really Kaiba’s room?”

“Yep. Mines across the hall.”

“In this big mansion you two have rooms right across from each other and not on the other side of the building?” Joey raises an eyebrow as he walks over to the smaller boy.

“I used to have bad nightmares when I was little. It was easier for Seto to be across the hall, he could hear me screaming and come to check on me faster.”

“Oh.”

“Okay, the computer and printer are up and running.” Mokuba grins evilly at the taller boy. “So, did you and Seto have fun Saturday night?”

“Didn’t he tell you want happened?” Joey moves over toward the desk, sitting his textbook and binder on the dark surface.

“He said it wasn’t any of my business.” Mokuba pouts. “But you’ll tell me, want you?”

“If he wanted you to know then he would have told you.”

“Did you two have a fight?”

“Why do you ask that?” Honey eyes stare down at the smaller boy.

“He was in a bad mood all day Sunday.”

“How could you tell?” Joey mumbles. “No, we didn’t have a fight.”

“Then why did he seem upset?”

“Probably because he lost a duel to Yami.”

“They actually dueled?” Mokuba’s wide eyes watch the sandy blonde closely.

“Yep. And after Yami battled Bakura who of course last ended with the two getting into a small pushing match which ended the evening.” Joey rolls his eyes.

“So…did anything happen between you and Seto?”

“You’re a curious little guy, aren’t you?” Joey chuckles.

“When it comes to you and Seto, yes.”

“Well, nothing happened.”

“Not even a kiss?” Mokuba smirks at the sandy blonde’s widening eyes.

“No. Where…Where did you hear that from?”

“I knew it. You two did kiss.”

“No, we didn’t. Did Kaiba tell you that?”

“He wouldn’t tell me anything.” The smaller boy pouts.

“Then how did…why did you ask that?”

“I always sneak and take a look at his drawings when he isn’t around.”

“Kaiba draws?” Joey’s mouth drops open slightly.

“Yep and he paints on occasion. See that over his bed? He drew that.” Mokuba points to the other side of the room at the large bed.

Joey looks over and marvels at the large painting in an intricately designed silver frame, a blue eyes white dragon takes almost the whole canvas, its piecing eyes staring over the bed. Its long claws outstretched as if ready to attack or defend, small sharp teeth almost gleam in the light pouring from the windows.

“He did that?” Joey asks amazed.

“Yeah. Good, isn’t it?”

“It’s great.”

Mokuba smiles as he digs in a drawer of the desk, his small hands rummaging through papers and folders until he grabs a thick notepad overflowing with paper, pulling it out he flips through it until he reaches the desired page, turning it for Joey to see.

“That’s what I was talking about with the kissing.” Mokuba’s violet eyes watch the sandy blonde closely.

Honey eyes roam over the black and white stretch of two boys in a deep embrace, their lips locked tightly, their arms wrapped around each other. Joey’s eyes widen at the unmistakable identities of the two boys, the boy that looks like Seto has a hand resting almost possessively on the boy that looks like himself’s hip.

Taking the book from Mokuba he flips through a couple pages his eyes scanning over the drawings of a little golden puppy, another one of the two boys, this time they just lay in bed looking deep into the other’s eyes. He gasps at a colored picture of two dragons intertwined together, one a blue eyes white dragon and the other a red eyes black dragon.

“So are you sure you two didn’t kiss?” Mokuba’s voice floats to Joey’s ears causing him to jerk his head up.

“What? No, we didn’t he just…he just gave me a little brush on the cheek, nothing like this.” Joey flips back to the original drawing Mokuba showed him.

“Guess he just wants that but is too shy to get it.” The smaller boy takes the book back and places it back in the drawer, shutting the door tightly.

“Kaiba shy? I don’t think so.”

“He is. He just acts mean and tough so that people don’t end up hurting him.”

“Mokuba I…”

“Do you like Seto?”

“What?” The sandy blonde sits in the large leather chair at the desk.

“Do you like Seto? And I’m not talking like as a friend.”

“Mokuba, I don’t think that’s any of your business.”

“Yes it is. I’m his brother and you’re my friend. I want to know.” Mokuba pouts.

“I…I…I really need to work on my report.”

“Don’t change the subject. Please, Joey, do you like my brother?”

“Hai.” Joey sighs.

“Really!” A large grin covers the raven hair’s face.

“Yes but you can’t tell him.”

“Why not? He obviously likes you.”

“Maybe but I would like to tell him when the time is right. Okay?”

“Fine.” Mokuba’s lower lip sticks out.

“Good. Now go away so can get this report done.” Joey playfully reaches out to push at the smaller boy’s chest.

“Okay. If you need anything just yell for me.” Mokuba turns around and walks out the tall door, leaving it open as he disappears across the hall.

-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-

Seto slowly makes his way through the large doors at the front of his house, his feet dragging across the thresh hold, his hand holding loosely to his silver briefcase. Stopping as he enters the house he removes his black dress shoes and closes the door behind him, clicking the lock before he trudges in socked feet toward the stairs, a small sigh escaping his lips as he starts up toward the second floor.

His head cranes from side to side, a soft popping noise sounding as his neck cracks, the tension from his business slowly draining away. The dark and quiet house seems welcoming as he finally reaches the top of the stairs and moves down the hall way to his bedroom, a frown crossing his face as he sees his door open. Stepping inside he expects to his little brother laying on his bed or watching television as he sits on the sofa, his short legs kicking above the floor but instead he finds no one.

Moving toward his desk he sets his briefcase in his leather chair, his eyes narrowing as he sees a textbook and binder on his desk that doesn’t belong to him. His long, thin fingers reaches out to flip open the binder his looking back at the door once he reads the name of the owner before shutting the notebook. His fingers quickly unbutton the couple black buttons holding his long white and black trench coat closed, the material slipping over his elegant shoulders so he can lay it over the back of the chair.

His long legs take him back out of his room to the door across the hall, his head leans forward slightly, ears straining to hear through the thick wood. His eyes narrow as he hears laughing, the unmistakable giggling of his younger brother joined with a slightly deeper laugh. Opening the door quietly he watches from the door frame as Mokuba and Joey lays on the light blue carpet in front of the television, their fingers moving quickly over game controls, their eyes locked on the screen.

“I’m so going to beat you this time.” Joey sticks his tongue out slightly as he leans with the person in the video game.

“Yeah right. You say that every time and every time I kick your as…”

“I wouldn’t finish that if I were you.” Seto’s voice causing the two to jump, their heads turning toward him.

“Seto! When did you get here?” Mokuba smile innocently at his big brother.

“Just a few minutes ago. What are you doing up? It’s past your bed time.” Seto’s arms fold over his chest covered in tight black cotton.

“Seto.” The smaller boy whines. “Don’t treat me like a baby in front of my friends.”

“Then don’t act like one. Put the game up. Did you eat?”

“Yeah. We called in a pizza.” Mokuba gets up, the game controls in his hand.

“What are you still doing here, inu?”

“Seto, be nice.” Mokuba hisses.

“Just keeping Mokuba company.” Joey stands up, his hands running down the sides of his navy school uniform.

“Did you do all your homework, Mokie?” Deep blue eyes look over at his little brother fiddling with the game system.

“Yep, Joey even checked to make sure before he played with me.”

“How about you, inu? Finish your report?”

“Yeah, thanks for letting me use your computer.” Joey ignores the dog remark as he moves toward the taller brunette.

“You didn’t break anything, did you?”

“No.”

“Seto.” Mokuba glares at his older brother.

“You quiet. Get into your pajamas and get into bed. I’ll be back in a minute to tuck you in.”

“Okay. Thanks for playing with me, Joey.”

“No problem kiddo. Next time I’m going to beat you, I swear.”

“Keep dreaming.” Mokuba giggles.

“He is really good at those video games.” Joey says as he moves out into the hall and across to Seto’s bedroom.

“He should be. That’s practically all he does.” Seto shakes his head as he follows the sandy blonde into his room.

“I can’t believe how late it is.” Joey mumbles as he looks toward the clock on the bedside table that reads a half past ten.

“Do you need to call your father?”

“Uh, yeah. If you don’t mind.”

“The phone is by the bed.” The tall brunette walks across the room to a door near the windows, disappearing through it as a light flips on.

Sliding across the plush carpet, Joey sits on the edge of the tall, soft bed to use the phone, picking it up he dials his number and waits as it rings. His honey eyes move over to the door Seto went into before looking up at the beautiful dragon painting above the bed, the phone clicks as someone picks it up on the other end.

“Yeah.” A gruff voice snaps into the receiver.

“Hey, dad.” Joey squeezes his eyes shut at the obvious drunk tone his father has.

“Where the hell are ya, boy?”

“I’m over at a friend’s house. I had to do a report.”

“Why didn’t ya call?”

“I forgot. Sorry.”

“You better get your ass home right now, boy.”

“Dad, I’m sorry but its already too late. I was thinking I’d stay over.”

“You had best not plan on getting in trouble tonight.”

“I’m not dad. I’m just going to go to sleep.”

“You going to skip school tomorrow?”

“No. I’m going. I’ll just wear the same uniform.”

“You better not be in any trouble, boy.”

“I’m not dad, I promise. Just get some sleep. I’ll see you tomorrow after school.”

“I’d better or else.” The gruff voice slurs before hanging up the phone.

Sighing and shaking his head, Joey puts the receiver of the dark blue phone on the base, his eyes looking absently over the cover of a hardback book.

“So you’re spending the night?” A voice near the end of the bed causing him to jump off the bed.

Joey’s honey eyes look the taller brunette up and down slowly, from the loose navy silk pajama bottoms that hang low on his hips and covers most of his feet to the slim bare chest with hidden muscles under tight, pale skin.

“What? Oh, no, I’ll just see if Yugi and Yami are still awake, they let me crash on the couch whenever my dad’s dr…whenever I need to.” Joey stumbles over his words as he looks up into dark blue eyes.

“Nonsense. You’ll stay here.”

“Really, ya don’t have to.”

“What if Yugi is already in bed? Then what will you do?” Seto crosses arms over his bare chest, his shoulder leaning against the tall post of the bed.

“I’ll just sleep where I normally would then.” Joey quickly moves toward the big desk to gather his books.

“And where is that?”

“None of your business, Kaiba. Why do you care anyway?”

“Because I do. Where?”

“Outside of school in the little gazebo thing.” Joey mumbles.

“What?” Seto hisses. “You sleep there at night?”

“Not every night.” Joey turns around.

“You’re staying here tonight and that’s that.”

“Really, Kaiba, its fine. I’m used to it.”

“I don’t care. The room to the right of Mokuba’s is set up for his friends when they come over. You can sleep there.”

“Kaiba…”

“Tomorrow you can wear one of my older uniforms and you’ll ride with me and Mokuba to school in the limo.” Seto moves to the bed, turning down the white comforter to reveal light blue cotton sheets.

“But…”

“No buts now go to bed.” Seto crawls into his tall bed, pulling the covers over his slim form. “Cut the lights off and shut the door on your way out.”

“Uh…ok.” Joey whispers as he moves toward the door.
