Chapter 6

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Yugioh sighed and poked at his dinner. He turned and looked at the place next to him, where Ahmose usually sat. But he had not had a dinner with Ahmose in over a month. Ever since Ahmose killed his teacher a year ago, he seemed like a different person. Yugioh never saw him anymore, even though they still shared a bed. Or had. Last week, Ahmose had been given his own room. He had always come to bed long after Yugioh was asleep, and he was gone and working at the first sign of morning, long before Yugioh ever awoke. He never came out to play, or rode through the kingdom or went swimming in the Nile with the prince anymore. He was working all day, from dawn to late in the night. The only time Yugioh ever saw Ahmose was in the throne room for the weekly report to the Pharaoh. Ahmose was going through a teacher each month, and it was getting harder and harder for the Pharaoh=s scouts to find anyone who knew something that Ahmose didn=t.
The boy was undefeated in combat by anyone who challenged him, and the Pharaoh had offered a handsome reward to anyone who could defeat the boy in order to get fighters to test and even teach Ahmose. But while many had tested him and taught him, none had defeated him. Sorcerers often came boasting that they could train Ahmose, and left later on the same day, stunned that the boy was far beyond their level. So now, Ahmose spent all of his time in his dark room studying his magic, or on the army training fields honing his combative skills, or in the temple, fulfilling his duties to Anubis. He had even been placed in charge of mummifying the last nobleman to die, and as soon as the aged High Priest of Anubis passed on, Ahmose would be named the High Priest.
Yugioh looked up when he heard footsteps that were familiar to his ears. He watched as Ahmose stalked past the door, with scrolls tucked under his arm. Yugioh frowned and stood, chasing the young man who was now much taller and slimmer, puberty forcing him to abandon his child=s body and resemble a man.
AAhmose!!@ Yugioh called, and the eleven year old turned. He saw Yugioh running towards him, and he bowed.
AYes, my Prince?@ He said, and Yugioh=s mouth fell open. Not only had he not realized that Ahmose=s voice had matured, but Ahmose had never been so formal. The ten year old prince stared at his old friend. He quickly regained his composure and stood straight up, looking up into Ahmose=s golden eyes and clearing his throat.
AI want to speak with you. Walk with me.@ He said. Ahmose blinked and looked down anxiously at the scrolls in his arms, but sighed and nodded.
AOf course, my lord.@ He said, and fell in side by side with Yugioh as they made their way down the corridor. The Pharaoh watched them unseen as they made their way into the gardens. AWhat did you wish to speak to me about?@
AYou.@ Yugioh said, and Ahmose blinked.
AMe? Have, have I done something to displease you?@
AYes.@ Yugioh said, and Ahmose stared, before lowering his eyes and bowing his head.
AMy apologies. What is it that I have done to displease you, my Prince?@
AYou=re doing it again!!!!@ Yugioh shouted, throwing his arms up in the air making Ahmose take a step back, startled.
AUhhhhYY@
AWhy are you being so formal?! Why do I never see you!?! Aren=t you supposed to be my bodyguard?!@
AYes, of course!!@ Ahmose gasped.
AThen why in the name of Ra aren=t you guarding me!?!@ Yugioh demanded, and the Pharaoh smirked from behind the palms. AYou can=t guard me when you=re cooped up in your room all the time! Or when you=re at the training grounds!@ Ahmose stared at Yugioh, speechless. Yugioh frowned and pouted. AI, I miss you.@ He whimpered and Ahmose blinked as the Prince threw his arms around him. AYou=re my best friend, and I hardly ever see you anymore.@ Ahmose blinked.
AY-yugiYYY.@ He gasped, and Yugioh backed away and smiled.
AYes. I much prefer you calling me that.@ He said, and slowly, for the first time in months, a small smile made it=s way to Ahmose=s face and the old light in his eyes flickered. AYou are supposed to be my bodyguard and personal companion. So from now on, I order you to start accompanying me!! Starting with dinner! Right now!!@ Ahmose=s mouth fell open in shock, and Yugioh laughed and threw him a wink. AForget your smelly old scrolls.@ Yugioh said, and snatched the papyrus from Ahmose=s arms.
AH-hey! Those are important!!@ Ahmose gasped.
AIf you want them, come and get them.@ Yugioh teased, and turned and ran. Ahmose=s eyes nearly popped out, before he finally gave chase.
AHey!! Prince Yugioh, give them back!!!@
AAh, ah, you called me >Prince Yugioh=! That=s a no-no, Ahmose!! It=s just plain Yugioh! Or Yugi! I like thatY..@ Yugioh mused to himself, then squeaked when he noticed Ahmose gaining. They circled the fountain a few times, before Yugioh went racing back into the palace.
AGive those back!!!@ Ahmose was shouting as he chased the prince, his long purple robes billowing out behind him. AYugioh!! Please!! YUUGIIIIIIIIIIIIII!!!@
The Pharaoh left his hiding place, laughing. He was very proud of his son. Ahmose was growing up too fast. He was glad that his son recognized this. He sighed. It looked like Ahmose would need Yugioh just as much as Yugioh would need Ahmose. As he went back inside, he suddenly stumbled and fell to his knees, a violent cough wracking his frame. Only Wosret kept him from collapsing completely. He heard feet rushing towards him as he sat on his hands and knees, splattering the floor with crimson.
APharaoh!@ A guard gasped, kneeling next to his king. When the Pharaoh finally stopped and stood, he allowed himself to lean on the Wosret, who supported his wheezing king to see the healer.
>My time is getting shortYY= the Pharaoh thought to himself sadly, and knocked on the healer=s door.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
AWHOA!!! Do it again!@ Yugioh gasped, and Ahmose smiled again. He looked at the little doll and his eyes flashed, and Yugioh grinned as the doll leapt to its feet and began to dance. AThat is so amazing!@
ANot really. Simple animation.@ Ahmose said. AOne of the first things I learned.@
AIt=s really that easy for you?@
AYes.@
AWhat isn=t, then?!@ Yugioh asked with an amused pout.
ATeleportation.@
AHuh?@
AA spell that can automatically transfer things from one location to another. For some reason, I can=t get the hang of it. It=s too draining. I=m exhausted afterwards. And it takes a long time to do a spell for more than one person or object.@
AHah! So you DO have a weak point!@ Yugioh crowed, thrusting a finger under Ahmose=s nose, and the sorcerer chuckled.
AShhhY Don=t tell.@ He said with a wink.
AI=m not gonna let you live it down.@ Yugioh said with a sly grin, and the sorcerer quirked an eyebrow.
AI won=t let you ever live down wetting the bed.@ He said, and the Prince turned bright red.
ALike you=ve never wet the bed before!!!@ Yugioh snapped, and Ahmose stood, grinning.
AI haven=t.@
ALIAR!@
AI don=t lie.@ Ahmose said calmly, and Yugioh pouted, knowing that this was true.
AOh, shut up.@ He grumbled, and the sorcerer snickered. But then, he put on his stern face and looked at the door. Yugioh looked too; he had been around Ahmose long enough to watch him for warnings such as this. And sure enough, the door swung open and Ptashepses stood in the doorway.
AAhmose. Yugioh. Come with me.@ He said and a dark, forboding tone. Both boys blinked, but obeyed. They were led to the doorway that led down to the dungeons, and the Vizier began leading them down the stairs. Halfway down, he stopped and looked at them, then reached up and pulled down on the torch mounted on the wall. Ahmose=s eyes narrowed, and Yugioh=s widened, as a hidden door swung open. The vizier led them through this, and they proceeded down a dark staircase. Yugioh wanted to ask where they were going, but something told him to be silent. They reached the bottom of the stairs, and stared at a massive chamber. They stood across from a raised dais, on which a throne sat hidden in the shadows, and two smaller chairs were set on either side of the throne. Before the throne was an empty arena, the stones stained with blood, and on either side of the room were raised platforms on which a two men stood. The vizier led the two boys to the dais on which the throne sat, and in the throne was the Pharaoh, Wosret at his side. He beckoned the boys to him, and they took their places in the chairs on either side of him.
AWhat you are about to witness is a Shadow Game.@ The Pharaoh said. ABe silent and observe. Your questions will be answered later. BEGIN THE GAME!!!@
Torches sprung to life, revealing the young Acolyte of the High Priest, Sethos, and the current High Priest. The High Priest raised his hand.
AI summon forth the Seven Colored Fish!!@ The Man shouted, and a huge stone tablet, three times as tall as the man, rose before him. Yugioh gasped and Ahmose=s mouth fell open as an image of the fish seemed to swim out of the tablet it was carved into. The tablet sunk into the floor, and Sethos raised his hand.
AI call upon the Sword Stalker to vanquish your fish!!@ He shouted, and another tablet rose, a dark being stepping out of it and slicing through the fish. Yugioh made a squeaking noise, and Ahmose=s eyes widened in amazement.
AWhat kind of magic is this?!@ He gasped, looking a the Pharaoh.
AShhhY Questions later.@ The Pharaoh said, and they looked back to the battle. The other man kept throwing monsters in what he called >Defense Mode=, and they kept getting slaughtered by the Sword Stalker. But suddenly, the tide turned.
AI summon forth the WingWeaver!@ The man called, and a woman with six wings sprung forth and demolished the sword stalker. Seto smirked.
AI call the Mighty Blue Eyes White Dragon!@ He bellowed, and the Pharaoh halfway stood from his chair in shock, as did all the other observers. A huge white dragon burst forth with a roar, and with a blast of light from its mouth, the Wing Weaver was incinerated.
AHow did he gain control over that beast?!@ The Pharaoh shouted, and the vizier leaned over.
AHe did so recently. He is the only one that the dragon will hear.@ He muttered. AHis Shadow Magic is great.@
AShadow Magic?@ Ahmose asked, his eyes glittering in anticipation.
AI seeY@ The Pharaoh said. AHe will be a powerful priest.@
AYes, my lord.@ Ptashepses said. Suddenly, there was a commotion on the dueling ground. Sethos screamed and ran across the ground as the aged High Priest slumped over. The other observers ran over as well, checking on the man.
AHe=s dead!@
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Ahmose stood behind the High Priest of Anubis, holding the linen bandages as he wrapped the deceased High Preist. The old man had suffered a heart attack at the shock of being attacked by the Blue Eyes White Dragon. Sethos had fallen into a deep depression, feeling that it was his fault that the man had died.
AAhmose, hand me the scarab amulet.@ The priest said from inside the Anubis headdress. Ahmose nodded and reached over to the nearby table and picked up the sacred amulet. ABless it.@ The priest said, and Ahmose nodded and held it out, muttering something under his breath and waving his hand over it, then handed it to his teacher. The man nodded his approval and laid the talisman on the chest of the priest, poured honey on it, then covered it with the linen wrappings.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Ahmose stood across the body from his teacher, and helped him lift the corpse into the coffin. It was closed, and lifted into the outer coffin. From there, they walked to the tomb in the grand procession led by Sethos, and Ahmose helped place the coffin into the stone sarcophagus. It was sealed, and he followed the other priests and Sethos out of the tomb, and it was sealed. He attended the ceremony in which Sethos was made the High Priest, but through everything, all he could think about was the Shadow Magic. He had already begun his training, side by side with Yugioh, who was catching on quite fast. This new darker form of magic fascinated Ahmose, and one of his greatest treasures was the Magical Item called the Millennium Key that was given to him and was now hung around his neck (Wosret had loudly protested the giving of the Key to Ahmose). Yugioh had been given the Millenium Puzzle, and Sethos had one called the Rod. But Ahmose was looking forward to his first journey into the Shadow Realm, in which he would meet the Shadow Creatures and choose the one that would be loyal to him, and him alone...
