Ryou went to his locker after school, frowning as he saw Malik, Marik, and Bakura waiting for him.
“Get away from my locker.”
Bakura frowned. “Not until you come home! What the fuck is with you Ryou –”
The boy clenched his fists and in a sudden move, pushed Bakura out of the way. “I said move!”
When Bakura started to retaliate, Marik held him back, shaking his head. “let it go…”
Malik twirled his hair around his finger and leaned on another locker. “Bambi, I’m sorry about the shirt thing. Okay? Come home?”
Ryou switched out his books, grabbing the letter he saw. “Go away Malik. You can do everything I can do. Why don’t you show the yamis some tender loving care.” He slammed his locker and walked away, furious.
Yugi ran over and saw that Ryou was already walking away. He snubbed Marik and ran after him. “Ryou!”
The boy turned and Yugi stopped. “Hey…can I come with you?”
“How do you know I’m going some where?”
The spike haired teen grinned, blowing a golden bang out of his face. “I dunno. Can I go?”
Ryou shrugged and let Yugi follow him to the car. The smaller teen shoved his scarf higher on his face and peeked at Ryou over the top.
“Ish gold.”
The white haired boy laughed, turning on the heat. “I know…but I love the winter…” Ryou started to pull out of the parking lot when Yugi reached for the radio.
“Doesn’t work.”
Yugi gave a muffled “aw” and sat back. They drove in silence for sometime until Ryou broke it.
“I’ve been living in a capsule hotel. They’re actually very comfy.”
The duelist giggled behind his scarf. “sure.”
“They are!” Ryou drove and started to hum, Yugi, now warm, listened to the lull of an engine in winter and dozed off.
When Yugi awoke, it was to the sound of car doors slamming. He looked around to see Ryou getting back in the car. The boy inquired sleepily with his wide eyes and Ryou smiled.
“You missed it. Want to go home or come with me?”
The boy shrugged and reached in his jacket. He pulled out a skull cap similar to his Grandfather’s and pulled it down on his head. He closed his eyes and leaned against the window, dozing off again.
As Ryou drove along he decided he liked the companionship of something quiet but warm.
Yugi’s sort of like a kitten…very hyper but easily tired… He listened to the boy’s steady breathing. And they purr…
At home, though Marik and Malik were anxious at the prospect of owning a cat, Bakura hated animals so they never got one. Ryou smiled, thinking of the argument Marik and Malik frequently had over what to name a cat if they had one. The boys would talk back and forth in Egyptian, modern and ancient, the squabble quickly escalating into pillow violence.
Ryou checked the address and looked up. The apartment building was huge. He poked Yugi and the boy gave a whine.
“Go away Yami…”
“Yugi, we’re here.”
The spike haired teen slowly awoke, blinking. Ryou giggled.
“You look like a young Sugoroku…”
Yugi snatched the cap off his head. “Do not…”
The two got Ryou’s bags, a duffel bag, and headed inside. They went up to the security desk and Ryou asked.
“Excuse me…Seto Kaiba –”
“Yes, leave the keys here. Mr. Kaiba said he’d get your..car…later.”
Ryou nodded and looked at his keys. “Um, where –”
“Top floor.”
Yugi bounded over to the elevator, very much awake. “Yes! A penthouse! I wish Yami were fucking Seto!...” he stopped and both he and Ryou made a face.
“Ewwww!” they both said at the same time, giggling after.
They got in the elevator and kept quiet the whole time, intimidated by the operator was way taller than both of them. When they reached the top floor, they left, Yugi shouting, “Thanks Jeeves!” as they ran away laughing.
Ryou caught his breath before he opened the door. “Yugi, that was mean!”
The boy kept grinning impishly. “What’s he gonna do? Take me to the wrong floor when I leave? I can press my own buttons!”
The white haired hikari laughed and opened the door. That’s when they both stopped.
Kaiba’s penthouse suite was spacious to say the least. High end contemporary furniture that was both comfy and stylish, expensive art work and vases, a fire place, and tiled floors were only some of the initial highlights the boys took in. When they finally stopped gawking and went inside, Ryou joined Yugi as they both ran around the apartment going, “What’s in here? Oooo!”
In a grand act of childishness they both took off their shoes and jumped on the king sized bed, happy to find that it was very soft. This also extended to the pillows, which Yugi happily tested by smacking Ryou with them repeatedly.
After an hour long pillow fight, the boys lay on the bed watching the plasma screen tv that hung from the ceiling. There was also another fire place, controlled by remote and a tiger skin.
“Kaiba sure does live nice…”
Ryou nodded. “I can’t believe he’s letting me stay here…”
The doorbell rang and both boys went to answer it. It was Kaiba.
“Yugi.” He looked the boy over. “You’ve been jumping on the bed.”
The boy blushed and laughed nervously. “Hi Kaiba…Ryou said I could come!”
The CEO rolled his eyes. “I took your junk heap away and gave it back to Bakura. I have no idea why he likes that piece of trash, but he wanted it back.” He looked around. “I haven’t been here in a year…”
Ryou bowed suddenly. “Thank you, um…Seto.”
“Hn. The staff will bring you food. Whatever you request. There is a maid and a chauffer. Any problems with the staff, you have my number.”
Yugi gripped Seto’s arm suddenly. “How come you didn’t tell me I’d get perks like this if we’d dated? You’re so mean!”
Seto grinned. “Then you’d’ve only gone for the size of my apartment. That’s wrong Yugi. I’m disappointed in you. Doesn’t your Desert Rat give you enough things?”
The boy huffed. “Marik isn’t a desert rat…he’s my Egyptian prince.”
Ryou giggled. “He can rob your caravan anytime!”
Yugi blushed and Seto laughed. “If you’re all settled, I have to get back downstairs before Bakura comes wandering in. He can only be kept occupied by the in limo tv for so long.”
Ryou bowed again. “Thank you Kaiba-san!”
The boy left, waving. “It’s Seto. Yugi, stay out of my fridge!”’
Yugi snapped his fingers and crossed his arms. “Damn it.”
Hours later, Yugi and Ryou sat in the Jacuzzi sipping grape juice out of champagne flutes. They toasted themselves.
“To the much abused state of the Hikari!”
Ryou laughed. “Here here! Although, you’re better off these days.”
Yugi shrugged. “Yami’s occupied. I think he’d really into Amelda. I heard him crying on the phone last night asking Amelda why he didn’t call for like a week.”
The white haired boy blinked. “Wow…” He looked up at the night sky. “Yugi…it’s snowing…”
“Oh wow…”
The contrast of the hot water and the falling snow was perfect. Both boys quieted down and watched snow fall into the Jacuzzi.
“I do everything for them and they’re so ungrateful.”
“I know. I’ll talk to Marik.”
Ryou shook his head. “They’re all spoiled. Marik spoils Malik like a child! He gives him anything and now that he’s got Otogi, it’s worse! Otogi so rich now that Dungeon Dice Monsters took off…”
“More gold jewelry?”
“And then some! You say anything and Malik runs crying to Marik, who’s ready to kill anyone who hurts Malik in the slightest.”
“And Bakura?”
The boy closed his large brown eyes. “It’s weird. Just so weird. Even stranger now that he’s got Seto.”
Yugi finished his juice, lowering himself further into the water. “Marik isn’t so bad…”
“I know. He’s very sweet.”
“Bakura has his moments.”
“I know. He’s very loving.”
Yugi stared at the sky. “You’ll be alright.”
Ryou got up and wrapped himself in a fluffy blue robe that had KC on the lapel. “Staying tonight?”
The boy shook his head, spikes wilted from the steam. “Marik wants me to come by…he wants me with him always.”
“He’s very possessive, but affectionate.”
Yugi nodded and reached for a robe of his own. “Will the driver take me to that part of town?”
“Kaiba pays him to obey.”
The teen shot his arm up. “Seig heil!”
The white haired hikari laughed. “Get out you goof!”

Before going to Marik’s, Yugi stopped off at home. He was about to go in his room when he heard ragged sobbing from Yami’s room. He went by and peaked in.
“Yami?”
The boy turned, make up running down his face with his tears. Yami had the phone between his lap.
Yugi’s face turned into a mask of concern and he went in, sitting on the bed. “What happened? You’re all dressed up –”
“A-A-ameldaaaa!” he sobbed, squeezing the phone and shutting his eyes. “Amelda, he –he –he –” The Pharaoh doubled over, sobbing. Yugi rubbed his back.
“Yami…please, did he hurt you?”
“Even –even –he said I meant nothing and that –and that –so what we actually went out a couple of times –that –that –that,” he burst into more tears. “Yugi I’ve never felt this way and he says I’m nothing and that he should get used to being a toy that I’m the King of Games and that we should see other people and that I need to move on and to stop calling his apartment because it upsets the people he brings home and I’m in love with him and he hates me!”
Yugi hugged him. “Shhh…” let’s go wash your face…”
An hour later, Yami sat on his bed, staring at his cards. “…big shield gaurdna…defense.”
Yugi shook his head. “Come on Yami. You’re losing! To me!” the leaned forward and looked into Yami’s eyes. “Please don’t be like this. Amelda’s an asshole.”
A knock came and a dangerous looking Marik stood in the doorway. “I told you nine hikari! It’s nearly twelve!”
Yugi hopped up and took Marik out of Yami’s room. He kissed the boy. “He needs me.”
Marik opened his mouth to complain then shut it, understanding. “Well…what am I supposed to do…” he ran his hand up Yugi’s thigh. “You know I need it.”
The boy giggled. “Tomorrow.” He kissed Marik. “And don’t worry, Ryou’s alright.”
“Eh.” Marik left, going into Yugi’s room. The boy went back to Yami’s room, taking the Pharaoh’s cards.
“Let’s go to bed Yami, okay?”
Yami just started crying again. “Ameldaaaa!” he sobbed, hugging a Robot Token plushie.
Yugi sighed and got the Pharaoh into bed. It was going to be a long night.

Ryou sat in the big bed, running his hand over the down comforter. This was too much.
He rifled through his bag until he pulled out a pink letter envelope and smiled. He opened it right away.
Dearest,
You looked upset this morning. I hope it was nothing I wrote. Though I do love winter, I regret that there are no roses for me to give you. I have dreams of you on a bed of roses quite…relieved of clothing, but tastefully I might add.
I want spring to come. That way I can take you around the gardens and watch butterflies come to light upon your feather soft hair. Sometimes I dream only of your hair. I imagine it to be soft like mine, silky and smooth, like grasping at air or water.
I don’t know how long I can continue this way. But I know, the time isn’t right for our meeting. I fear, I am not ready to face you.
What does one do when face to face with the rarest beauty? I have to think quickly, for my heart cannot take any more stolen glances or imagined kisses.
I saw you running laps again with your friend. It escapes my how a cherub and an angel find themselves in so much trouble. I know your plan though. Perhaps if you’re naughty, the gods will see fit to let you stay on earth with this unworthy mortal?
Or maybe if I’m lucky, I’ll be struck down by your beauty and you will take me back with you.
Enclosed is a token from me, in honor of your beauty. To wear this will signify to me the bond between us if nothing else. Though I wish for a token from you, I suppose it will simply have to wait. The memory of you though, will suffice for now.
Everlasting,
Ryou looked in the envelope and drew out a silver chain. On the end of it was a pendant. It was circular and had an odd pentagram design.
Not really a pentagram.
A slip of paper winked out of the letter. On it read: This is the Orichalcos. It binds us together, soul to soul.
Ryou put it on immediately and crushed the letter to his chest, falling back with a sigh, his white hair fanning all around him.
“Oh…” he stared at the ceiling with glazed eyes and flushed cheeks. “You…”
Outside, the snow fell softly, the moon catching every flake as it drifted down to earth. Inside, Ryou lay already in dream land, a smile gracing his lips.
