Floatin’

Yugi woke up the following morning feeling dead. He knew he should have gone to bed early, but no. He had to stay up and exchange insults with a delinquent. He glanced at his clock –or rather would’ve if it had not been in pieces in his trash.

He growled and got dressed, not really caring what time it was. When he was all finished he wandered downstairs and looked up at the game shop’s wall to learn it was a lovely seven in the morning. He cursed. How dare his body wake him up so early?

The spike haired boy rubbed his forehead as he stepped out into the cheerful morning sun.

I never knew Fridays could feel like Mondays…

When he arrived at school, he knew there was no way he could head off the ridicule so he endured it with as straight of face as possible, hoping no one would be too upset about some of the things he’d written to give him anymore bruises.

Amazingly, he got quite a bit of sympathy as well from a number of girls who hated Anzu. However, this was his only consolation as many of his peers shunned him because of his newly outted preference in the same sex.

Dismissing it the best he could, he went to home room and sat in his seat near the window, his bruised cheek pillowed by his leather book case. He rubbed his stomach and wished he’d stopped to get breakfast, but he hadn’t. Hearing Yami and Grandpa in the kitchen had quickly turned him off the idea of food and he’d simply left without so much of a goodbye.

He closed his eyes and didn’t open them again until he was roughly shoved out of his chair. He opened his eyes to see a very pissed Bakura, ready to punch his lights out.

“You little bastard!” The soul stealer grabbed Yugi by the collar and cocked back his fist. “Ryou’s kicked me out because of you! I had to sleep in the car! –”

The duelist’s face paled as he thought about the pain of another beating. “It’s not my fault! You’re a no good thief! I’ve never done anything to you! Why Bakura? Why?”

The albino sneered. “Why not? Anyone associated with the Pharaoh is fair game and –”

Before he could finish, the white haired yami was roughly pulled back and shoved aside. Yugi collapsed on the floor again and managed to get up in time to see Ryou’s rage filled eyes glower at Bakura.

“Leave Yugi alone! You’ve done enough!”

The thief cursed and left the room, kicking over several desks on his way out. It peeved him to no end when Ryou stood up to him in public.

After he was gone, Ryou looked at Yugi, staring him straight in the eye. The shorter teens violet orbs were full of conflicting emotions. Ryou spoke first.

“I’m…I forgot to send him –”

Yugi looked away. “I don’t want to talk to you Ryou. Ever. Go away.”

“Yugi please! I’m sorry –”

The shorter teen turned his back on the doe eyed hikari. “I said go away.”

Ryou left the room fighting tears.

When Yugi turned back, he felt a small grain of regret, knowing how much he’d hurt the boy. But he decided it was too small for him to care. After all, he’d been betrayed.

By lunch, the incident seemed to have pretty much blown over, either that, or people were tired of him not reacting to all the insults and jibes. He’d gone through his first four periods in an unusually meditative state, not really hearing what his teachers said. He just couldn’t believe so many people had betrayed them.

They acted like everything was normal for a whole week! And even before that, Jou and Honda…

Yugi shook his head and snapped back into the reality of the lunch room. Usually, he would’ve sat with his friends, but since it seemed he didn’t have any left, he was going to have to find a new place to call him own.

As he passed the groups of kids sitting down or heading to the lunch line, he saw his “friends” huddled at the table they used to sit at near the center of the lunch room. He watched indifferently as Jou popped his head up and looked over at him, guilt written in his features. The spiky haired youth ignored the plea for forgiveness and walked past them.

He was nearly to the back of the lunch room when his vision crossed paths with Yami. It seemed he and Otogi were surrounded with fans, as usual, and were handing out autographs like free ice cream. Apparently, the latest issue of some magazine had come out and they were both on the cover.

Yami smiled for a photo with some random fan girl then noticed Yugi. His face grew solemn quickly and he tried to break away from the crowd to get over to Yugi. Before he could even make headway in the sea of girls however, Yugi was already gone. That was when he was group glomped by Anzu and her mega fan girl/ friendship cult.

Yugi shook his head and found himself a table near a window where he could be invisible. It was the first time he’d sat alone since middle school.

Even back then he’d been short. Shorter than now even, and that didn’t go un-noticed by the stronger boys through out the school. He’d been constantly harassed, made fun of, and beaten up daily. However, when he’d entered high school, it’d all changed when he’d met his first friend.

She was kind to him when no one else was and she defended him like no one would. With her speeches about friendship and loyalty, Yugi really though he’d found himself a person to be with. Then Anzu had turned into a colossal bitch when she discovered Yami.

At first, Yugi had no problem with it. He had his two new friend’s Honda and Jou, people who would probably fight to the death for him, but when they also began Yami worship, he sensed a problem.

Even still, he’d convinced himself it was alright. He still had friends, he still had a place to sit, and no one made fun of him anymore.

Then yesterday happened.

Yugi bit into his sandwich with a savagery rivaling the greatest of big cats. His world had gone to hell in a hand basket, but at least he had sandwiches. Looking out the window after deciding to chew in a more civil manner, he noticed how peaceful and quiet the back of the lunch room was. That is, until Malik plopped down opposite him.

The vain Egyptian blond gave him a toothy grin and balanced his chin in a palm. “Ryou’s in the bathroom crying. He wanted me to tell you sorry.”

Yugi bit into his sandwich again. Turkey sure did taste good with Dijon mustard.

Malik laughed. “You should have seen him go berserk on 'Kura-chan!” He reached out and stole a few of Yugi’s chips. “She paid him you know? She though ‘Kura was some sort of ‘bishie’ and fucked him, saying it was a privilege.”

Yugi drank some of his soda and licked the excess from his lips.

“Surely you realize this wasn’t about you? I was getting back at the Pharaoh! Bakura could care less about you.” Malik watched Yugi finish his food and get up, disappointed that he couldn’t get a rise out of the munchkin.

“Yugi?”

“It’s always about the Pharaoh isn’t it?”

Malik blinked his lavender eyes. “Um…duh? Why wouldn’t it be?”

Yugi shook his head. “You’re definitely a blond…” He began walking away but Malik caught up with him.

“Wait!”

The psycho hikari gave Yugi a gold chain and grinned like a jack-o-lantern. “Marik says ‘Keep your fuckin’ mouth shut or I’ll cut out your tongue’.” He giggled inanely. “I’d be careful if I were you!” He clapped the teen on the shoulder and strutted off.

Yugi just shook his head and continued out of the lunch room.

Later that day, as Yugi left the school yard, he was confronted by Jou and Honda. Both of the taller boys looked nervous and after a few elbows on both sides, Jou stepped forward.

“Hey Yug –”

He walked past them without so much of a blink of recognition and began walking down the sidewalk. He listened to them sprint ahead of them and frowned as they blocked his way.

“Yugi!” Honda spread his arms out. “Look! We never knew this was gonna happen –”

“Yeah Yug! Yami told us you were mad an’ –”

Yugi sneered. “Mad? About what? This?!” He pointed to the bruise on his cheek. “Or the fact that you all read my diary and enabled Bakura to steal it!?”

Both boys fell silent and the tri color haired boy snorted. “Yeah, that’s what I thought. You can both go to hell.”

Yugi left them then, crossing the street with reckless abandon, just barely avoiding getting hit by cars.

He walked for a long time, opposite the direction of his home, the game shop. He needed to get away from that place for awhile, clear his head. He knew his Grandpa would be watching the shop today so he had no worries.

Is Malik right? Am I that insignificant? Is it all about the Pharaoh?

He came to some yellow tape blocking his way and noticed a crowd had gathered. The front window of a shop was shattered and it seemed there were items missing. The police were doing there best to push people back, but Yugi wiggled his way through and made his way to the front.

He saw a brick and couldn’t help but smile.

He should’ve just spray painted “Marik wuz here.”

An officer frowned at him and Yugi melted back into the crowd, crossing the street and continuing his walk. He didn’t need to get questioned for anything that yami did. He wanted no trouble from Marik and his illegal activities.

However, he didn’t get too far as an officer stopped him anyway. The female cop frowned down at his and pointed at him with her night stick.

“You think that was funny back there?”

Yugi shook his head. “No ma’am. I just saw the brick and I thought it was funny that the robber would be so crude –”

“One of your little friends do it? That why it’s funny?”

Yugi’s brows knitted together. “Officer, I’m from the other side of town! I just got out of school! I’m visiting my grandmother!”

The woman’s expression softened. “Oh…sorry. Carry on.”

The teen walked off, looking behind him until the officer faded from view. He shook his head and tightened his hold on his book case.

Thanks a lot Marik… He sighed and looked up at some buildings in the distance. His eyes widened as a thought occurred to him. I just lied for Marik!

“Aw damn it…” He kicked at a random soda can and absently reached into his pocket. His fingers found the chain within, warm from his body heat. He found himself entangling his fingers around it and unconsciously smiling.
