A Confession
Jounouchi groaned loudly as he made his way into the apartment. The deal had gone well, but he still had so much work to do to keep it running smoothly. He liked being in charge, the feeling of power and control it gave him. He admitted to himself that it was more work than he had thought, and he really wouldn’t want such a high pressure job on a permanent basis. However, the tantalizing idea of Kaiba as his slave for three months was just enough to keep him going.
He was just settling down for the evening when he received a message from the receptionist.
“Jounouchi-san, there is a Mutou-san here to see you. Should I send him in?”
Jou’s face brightened and he told the woman to send him in right away. He’d rarely seen his friend since the bet had started, and he had really begun to miss him, especially now.
When Yuugi entered the apartment that Jou had begun to think of as home, his purple eyes were bright with wonder. Jounouchi looked so different than he had at school. Yuugi noticed the shaggy but now more controlled haircut, but seeing him stand there in well-fitting black slacks, a royal blue dress shirt and darker blue tie, he struck an image that Yuugi hadn’t realized his friend could make. In this setting, he seemed to be in his element, his posture one of breezy confidence. His days with KaibaCorp had really improved him.
“Yuug! I’m real glad you stopped by!” Jounouchi said as he wrapped his friend in a warm hug.
“Kaiba’s at his own place with Mokuba tonight. He’s left me alone, but any calls will be conferenced to his cell phone automatically. He still doesn’t trust me, ya know. I’ve made the guy millions of dollars, but he still thinks I’m gonna run him down somehow. I mean c’mon. D’ya really think I’d fail in just one night. That guy-”
“Whoa, Jounouchi.” Yuugi held up his hands in mock surrender. “Calm down. You only talk like this when you’re really anxious. Is there something going on?” Yuugi looked at his friend, concern darkening his violet eyes.
Jou scratched the back of his head sheepishly.
“You noticed, eh?” Jounouchi looked at the shorter boy for a moment, and then gestured to him to sit on one of the leather chairs.
“Yuug, you can keep a secret, right?”
Yuugi nodded his head emphatically. “Of course, Jou. You know you can tell me anything.”
Jounouchi let out a long breath as he pushed his shaggy locks out of his face. He knew what he wanted to say, but he wasn’t sure if he was ready to actually form the words. Finally, letting out yet another sigh, he turned to Yuugi with a serious expression on his face.
“Yuug, I think I’m in love with Kaiba.”
He winced as a look of shock crossed his best friend’s face.
“It’s just, I know how happy you and Malik are together, and I want that too. And I’ve been thinking about Kaiba in more than just the ‘He’s a bastard, I hate his guts’ sense. A lot more than that. As much as I hate to admit it, I want that romantic kinda thing that you two have.”
Yuugi shook his head to clear the shock from his face.
“Well… what does he have to say about this, Jou?”
“He doesn’t know. At least not that it goes this deep. I’ve… you know… kinda come onto him a couple of times, but I’ve never said anything about all of this.” Jou was slightly embarrassed about telling his friend exactly HOW he had come onto Seto. “I can’t even get him to admit he wants me –which he does- so I can’t imagine getting him to express his undyin’ love for me.”
Yuugi bit his lip a moment as he thought.
“Well, you know Jou, maybe it’s not about him saying anything, or about you saying anything either. I really knew that Malik loved me not when he said it, but when I saw it in his eyes. If you really feel that strongly about him, show him what he means to you.” Yuugi shrugged slightly, a light smile crossing his face. “Maybe he’ll come around.”
Jou nodded and smiled. Maybe Yuugi was right, he thought as they shared some tea. Maybe he was would have to show Kaiba that he cared about him. He still doubted the feelings were shared, but he remembered the old adage: “Actions speak louder than words.”
