Chapter 5

Yugi entered the capital of the Ocean, Atlantis, flanked by Atemu and Jono. People gazed upon them curiously, wondering why the Oracle had been brought back unannounced and as a merman, no less. Had something gone wrong? It was that fear that flitted through the capital that day, the citizens anxiously awaiting official word before swimming off to spread the news. Atemu and Jono handed Yugi off to a mermaid with long blue hair and a snowy blue snakelike tail. The mermaid gently lead the confused merman to a room made of smooth amethyst-colored coral. Yugi looked around the room, feeling a strange sense of familiarity he couldn’t account for. He began to feel frightened without Atemu by his side, laying down on a bed of live seaweed, beginning to sniffle as he held back tears he hadn’t even realized had been buried for a long time. The mermaid swam closer and sat at the edge of his bed.
“I know you must be frightened, but know this: Prince Atemu will never allow any harm to come to you,” she whispered softly. Yugi began to cry anyway, and the mermaid rubbed his back in a soothing fashion.
“Wh- why couldn’t Yami stay with me?” he sobbed, not realizing he had used Atemu’s “other name”, one that was supposed to be lost with the rest of his memories as a merman. The mermaid gasped and drew back, frightened. Yugi looked at her with wide, sad eyes. “Wh- what did I do wrong? I only asked why Atemu couldn’t be here with me! I feel really, really scared without him.”
The mermaid berated herself for her involuntary reaction. Of course it would be nearly impossible to erase memories contained not within one’s mind, but within one’s heart. The boy hadn’t even noticed he had used the wrong name, one of the two closest to his heart just happened to slip out, and it was the wrong one. The merman was confused and frightened, all because of that Seawitch and the Prophecy. She spat mentally, swearing that if she ever got that sea urchin alone, she would bite her and intoxicate her with her deadly venom. (For this mermaid was of the sea snake variety.) The mermaid resumed trying to console the poor frightened merman, but he only wanted Atemu, he only wanted his Yami: the boy used those two names interchangeably, not even realizing the differences the sounds coming out of his mouth made for either name. For in his mind, he was only saying Atemu.
