Chapter 5
Yusei left the hospital via the roof to avoid the swarm of reporters out front. There were shouts of dismay from the ground below as said vultures saw their story flying away without giving them a chance to get anything from him. Yusei soared, catching an updraft as he looked for the Arcadia building. He found it surrounded by shorter buildings, the skyscraper being taller than even Kaiba Corp.’s headquarters. Yusei snorted. Divine’s ego was larger than the legendary Seto Kaiba’s. That was quite a feat to pull off.
Yusei landed on the roof of the skyscraper to avoid as many guards as possible. He slipped in through the rooftop entrance and began searching for the training rooms. He figured that would be a good place to start.
He found Aki talking to Divine. Or rather, Divine was talking to Aki. Yusei hid behind a corner to listen.
“Do you honestly think Yusei’s going to come and sweep you off your feet, allowing you to live a normal life?” Divine sneered. Aki hung her head sadly. Yusei growled. So THIS was how Divine controlled her! By making her fear and loathe everyone who could help her. He wouldn’t have it.
Yusei stepped out from his hiding place, right into Aki’s line of vision. She gasped, “Yusei...”, causing Divine to whirl around. The psychic duelist’s mouth opened in horror to find Yusei standing there, fuming with rage.
“You will let Aki go. You will let her think and decide for herself. You will not brainwash and poison the minds of innocent people any longer, or you will feel the consequences,” Yusei threatened, energy beginning to crackle in the air around him from his intense rage. Divine leered at him.
“Oh, what? You’ll bring divine judgment on me?” he sneered. Yusei shook his head.
“I’ll leave that up to the fate of the game. It’s not just evil that can use the shadows. Several forces of good, including the Nameless Pharaoh, Yugi Moto, and Judai Yuki all used the Shadow Games to deal judgment on evil. I may be an angel, but I was raised here on earth, giving me the powers of my birth and of the legendary heroes written about in the history books. Now, will you take my advice, or are you willing to play a game with me?” Yusei said, shadows creeping from his own as the luster of his wings began to turn dark.
Divine gulped. This was no illusion. This was real. Yusei controlled not only the powers of light, but the powers of darkness as well. Divine backed away, shouting, “Take her!” and ran. Yusei sighed, recalling the shadows under his control.
“Always knew he was really a coward. People like that usually are,” he mused quietly. He turned to Aki. “Sorry if I frightened you. I couldn’t have him continue to spout lies and cause you pain.”
Aki nodded, wondering why Yusei had allowed himself to take such a beating in their duel if he contained such immense powers. ‘He was trying to save me in that duel,’ she reminded herself. She gasped, ‘He was taking those hits to ease my pain by letting me transfer it to him!’
Tears came to Aki’s eyes and she turned away, feeling she wasn’t worthy to be saved. Yusei wrapped an arm around her shoulders and pulled her close. The teen gasped as she was pulled against Yusei’s warm chest and embraced by the angel. “If you weren’t worthy, why did I try so hard to save you?” he asked, correctly guessing why she was crying. Aki bawled into Yusei’s chest, letting him support her - she was tired of supporting herself, she needed someone. She needed him, and he held her up, silently promising to be there for her forever.
